so why don't you try it, microsoft started breaking compatibilities with windows 7-8.
Linux there was a time it could, but those corporate bastards even target the kernel these days... there are some breaking changes in the userland, depending on what you want to run.

Don't @ me with any bullshit about muh business applications either because none of that shit was y2k compliant. wine is a better compatibility layer for 1993 programs than what ships with win11. It's literally a one liner to run freecell on Linux.

That gets more difficult, the jeets at Microsoft never bothered to add DirectDraw support for Vista and newer for example, it often breaks color palettes. You need to rely on PCEm or compatibility wrappers (dxwrapper, dxwnd, dgvoodoo, WineD3D et al.) to play some of the older games.

>>
it's a little unfair to compare them directly by the same year. linux was still brand new in 1992/1993 when win32s came out, and not new in the commercial product sense either, new in the new hobby project sense. it had a long way to go before it settled on even the basics. like for example it didn't even use ELF executables back then. in fact, support for the old executable format was removed in linux 5.19 (2022), so you can't run any linux binaries from 1993 anymore

you can't run 1993 linux programs at all. linux didn't start using elf binaries until 1995, and support for the old format was dropped in 2022. 1995-1997 elf's maybe, those still use the old "linux libc" instead of standard glibc. after 2002 should be way easier as most distros still have compatibility packages for that version of glibc, and anything after 2004 (glibc 3.4+) should just work as long as you have any other external dependencies the program needs

NTA but I had several of those and stopped trying native ports a while ago. A lot of them have ridiculous deps like Ubuntu 14 or something. It wouldn't be that hard to come up with a reasonable podman layered solution for native binaries if Windows became totally irrelevant at some point, but so far everyone is content to use wine as the standard cross-platform ABI.

Diablo 2 already barely worked in xp. It did work if you enabled compat mode, though. In win7 you needed some extra hacks. They also started doing emulation for compat instead of proper compat. Been even worse in 8 and further worth in 10.

Absolutely false. XP in general had excellent compatibility with Win 9X games. 7 is where more issues started popping up.
To their credit, 10 and 11 have compatibility that is pretty much on par with 7, so no huge loss there.

Debian provides OCI images going back to 2.2 (2000), which is old enough to run pretty much any closed source Linux program. Google can show you how to set up the environment in 5 seconds. User ABI stability is just not relevant.
