/hsg/ is about learning and expanding your horizons. Know all about NAS? Learn virtualization. Spun up some VMs? Learn about networking by standing up a OPNsense/PFsense box and configuring some VLANs. There's always more to learn and chances to grow. Think you’re god-tier already? Setup OpenStack and report back.

    >What software should I run?
Install Gentoo. Or whatever flavor of *nix is best for the job or most comfy for you. Jellyfin/Emby/Plex to replace Netflix, Nextcloud to replace Googlel, Ampache/Navidrome to replace Spotify, the list goes on. Look at the awesome self-hosted list and ask.

    >Why should I have a home server?
De-botnet your life. Learn something new. Serving applications to yourself, your family, and your frens feels good. Put your tech skills to good use for yourself and those close to you. Store their data with proper availability redundancy and backups and serve it back to them with a /comfy/ easy to use interface.

Honestly, not a fan of slskd solely because of the interface. Very user unfriendly imo. Every element is fuckhuge, every (or almost every) list/tree defaults to open, the way the browser tree works is so ass backwards and unintuitive it's like it was done on purpose, and basic qol features like going to a user profile or browsing all of their shares from a download search result doesn't exist. I'm sure there are other things too that I've forgotten. Honestly I am very not impressed. The only reason I was thinking of moving from nicotine is that it has no bidirectional clipboard being a gtk thingy inside of a docker container, otherwise I wouldn't have even bothered looking for a replacement.

What model is it? It sounds like it might be a combination PON ONT and router, in which case it might still be possible to replace it, but you wouldn't be able to use a regular fiber Ethernet SFP.

    >>
    >>110173831
    gotem
    >>
    >>110180426
Probably not, unless your ISP actually gives you a fiber Ethernet (rather than PON) handoff, or their SFP module is an "ONT on a stick" that speaks Ethernet to the port it's plugged into, or by "tplink modem box" you mean one of TP-Link's ONTs, rather than one of their routers or switches that are equipped with Ethernet SFP ports.

Identifying exactly what hardware it is (model numbers, or even just some pictures) that you currently have from your ISP and want to replace would save a lot of guessing.

first thing you install is a coding agent like opencode, pi, or codex

Then you ask it to write bash scripts to configure whatever you were gonna do by hand in the GUI.

Then you save those scripts; now your system is perfectly reconfigurable later, exactly the same, just by running that script.

    >that third party service has compromised people before
listen here, you disingenuous little shit: nobody was """""compromised""""", the actual explanation is right there in your screenshot. @poczta.pl is a shit free email service. because tailscale uses oauth instead of their own identity & login service, the oauth service incorrectly assumed that @poczta.pl was a private domain belonging to a business, and so treated everyone with a @poczta.pl email as belonging to the same business. which is why they appeared on the same tailnet until the mistake was rectified, not that you bothered mentioning that. kindly castrate yourself and then kill yourself
    >>
    >>110201060
Tailscale requiring any auth service is the problem .
I didn't bother mentioning that it was fixed because its 1 year old so obviously its fixed but its an example of how using something with third party auth is scary and your stupid to give that complete lan/machine access .

Compare this to the basic wireguard key system that doesn't email, google auth or any other garbage.

Is there a reason I should keep the possibility of needing to decode AV1 open as a possibility for my server?

Trying to decide between running an mATX vs ITX mobo, both have 10Gbe networking built in and I will need an HBA so the only reason I would get the mATX would be to have an extra PCIE slot for a av1 capable gpu in the future since my quicksync generation doesn’t have it.

I only care about archival grade quality files and as far as I know all AV1 files available online or on private trackers are just lossy reencodes of original releases that were originally H.264/5, even most WebDL’s aren’t AV1 right?

Not a server question but I figure you all would know:

I need a portable HDD to plug into my PC's via USB, but everything is overpriced right now and I want to buy a refurbished or used internal HDD instead and just use a USB enclosure

However, the only drives I can find for a really good price are SAS rather then SATA, and I can't seem to find a enclosure that will work with SAS drives that would function like a portable drive that's not obscenely overpriced, unless I'm just not looking in the right places

Do they not exist or what?

Haven't tried either, so I can't say for certain. I just compared the features that they both list and picked monbooru to test.

I'd been thinking of what kind of a local booru I'd make for myself, and I wanted it to be able to sort all of my media without worrying about filename collisions and be able to fetch tags from public boorus, which monbooru is able to do in spades. It also supports fetching tags from Hydrus' PTR (assuming you have 80+ GB to spare) and using AI to automatically tag images. Haven't tried the AI tagging yet since I want to import human-curated tags as much as possible before going that route.

The overall user interface is also pretty good. Even usable on a phone too.

It also has a really nice interface for image relations. It automatically marks images that look similar and lets you go through them quickly to decide if they're duplicate images (not hash equivalent), variants to each other, newer/older versions of each other or based on the other. Was able to see that I had some lower-resolution duplicates in my library.

depends on your use case and what the actual drive is rated for.

if it's rated for 1PB then return it, if it's rated for 100PB then it's fine.

if it's disk 2 in a 2 disk raid, then maybe get something better, but if it's disk 12 in a 20 disk array then depends on how much you paid for it
    >>
    >>110192281
Datacenter-grade Toshibas are usually rated for 550 GB/year (look up datasheets for your specific model) so 1 PB total is not that bad. ECC errors are not good.

    Looks neat.
Szurubooru is basically dead at this point. Abysmal performance, development on life support for years, absolutely not worth picking up right now.
Oxibooru is a fork (technically?) of Szurubooru with a lot of stuff rewritten from scratch to deal with Szuru's performance issues. Its main selling point is Szurubooru compatibility - it can easily import an existing Szuru database (but not the other way around, nobody would actually want that anyway though), it supports Szuru's gallery-dl-based toolkit for mass importing as well as Szuru's browser extension (extension can directly import booru posts). Performance difference between Oxi and Szuru is absolutely insane - Szuru can process 1 post per XX seconds, Oxi does XX posts per 1 second in exactly the same conditions, and no, I'm not exaggerating.
Maybe I should spin up a monbooru instance to see what it's like too. Feature set seems pretty similar to Oxi but I don't know how I would go about importing my existing 400k+ images database with tags and stuff from Oxi if I end up liking it more.

How to prepare for the cyber apocalypse that is comming?

multiple CVEs comming out everyday, like the linux TCP one just before, I have to upgrade ubuntu, I have deactivate SMB for now, etc.
at this point a lot of services are almost not worth running if I get my shit hacked. I only port forward wireguard but still, I run agents on the network and family are probably running random shit too. Some have android phones almost a decade old gulp

Also, Is it worth it buying a router, just to have VLANs? I'd have to set the ISP one to bridge mode and buy a router access point. I just read somewhere that OpenWrt have ancient kernels too anyways.
Maybe the move will be to have NAS for media and airgap personal data

    >>
    >>110215345
I mean a unifi cloud gateway plus a ultra poe switch plus an AP is ~$600. I'm probably going to bite the bullet and go for it because I really want one of their ptz cameras in my apartment because I don't trust the maintenance people who have access to my apartment. The newer G6 ptz is like $500 and it has a speaker so you can talk through it. I would really like to run a llama instance that would connect to home assistant and then talk to anybody who walks into the apartment while the thing swivels around and watches them just so I don't have like a guitar or gun or watch go missing. ~$1100 seems worth it to me to get home networking plus a ptz camera so I can actually control my vlans and get anything like shitty smart tvs segregated and put adblock and dns tracking on everything. I also think it would be very funny to have the llama instance take my side if my wife and I talk and tell her I'm right all the time.

Jellyfin might be a problem but currently I only stream to a Shield and chink box on my network so I don't think transcoding is required.
    >>

You don't need transcoding, you are just serving the files pretty much. That should be more than enough to do that, I have an old J4125 8GB NAS that servers IPTV, VODs, and Jellyfin at the same time to 2 Shields and an Onn without issue.

Such a pain to configure the transcoding right but I think I've finally figured it out.

Direct play wasn't working right for some reason. Turns out I had
    encode_target = "opus"
set in the config file and that stupidly overrides anything else you set and effectively forces transcodes all the time which is obviously not what I want when I want to direct play.

The right thing to do is not to have encode_target in your config and set everything in the web ui instead.
