Samsung had its folding phone beta testers, now Apple does. Duo 2 is unlikely to be much better. They already said it might take until Duo 3 to have Face ID. iPhone 20 Anniversary will be the better buy next year, same as the 18 pro/max is best this year.

yes plastic can bend but it is not designed to be used as a hinge. this will continue to happen as long as you have folding screen tech. it will snap and break either the cost of the feature or wisen up and get a phablet or some other compromise.
>>
This may be the issue. Apple appears to be using two different types of metal for the hinge. Likely they expand different when hot. Especially given the vapor chamber cooler.
>>

>>110166070
>>110166092
>>110166103
Dude purposely broke it by folding it backwards. It doesn't exactly explain why it is breaking from normal folding. That said it still is likely the same weak ass stainless steel part they should have made out of titanium like the center of the hinge.
>>
>>110166113
i get what your saying but the few unlucky people who had the same issue organically also had the same symptoms of "excessive resisitance" upon opening the phone right before the display got damaged
>>
>>110166124
In the end it doesn't matter. I like my iPhone, but Apple deserves to suffer for fucking this launch up. Hopefully the failure rate is Xbox 360 high.
>>
>>110166113
>It doesn't exactly explain why it is breaking from normal folding
i think the defects the casting quality get it stuck, people put in a bit more force and goodbye screen and hinge. like you say, you'd need titanium. even then you'd need some kind of structural support instead of being this thin bit of metal flapping away. whole things appears to be junk and needs to be redesigned. the casting defects are troubling signs and should have never made it to a production line.
>>
>>110166147
Apple I'm sure is going to play dumb, but they know right away the issue with the hinge. Or they wouldn't be buying 100 million worth of titanium.

>>110145710
It's not a silly gimmick. I bought an OG Pixel Fold on a whim because I needed a new phone and I thought that even if the inner screen breaks the outer screen will probably limp me through until I can get a replacement. It's about the size of an OG 3DS. Weirdly in my hands it feels exactly like you'd think a tablet folded in half would feel. It's heavy, but again, about as heavy as a tablet. I'd say I spend 80% of the my time on the phone just using the outer screen, but for those times when I know I'll have a little extra time and I want to just use my phone for a while, unfolding it and instantly have a fucking tablet in my hands is way better than I expected. I genuinely fucking love it. I installed Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate 1/2, Icewind Dale, and even Daggerfall on it, and it's just so fucking perfect for those games. I've been really careful with the inner screen so far, but it feels durable enough that as long as you don't treat it like a dumb ape it's probably pretty reliable.
>>
>>110156468
>>110166325
That phone is barely a year old. You're still in the honeymoon period

The strongest metal will bend or break if the joint is badly designed. Can't believe they fucked this up so bad though. I mean I can but I bet they are kicking themselves for not listening to that one engineer who surely warned them.

I tried to switch to Apple once it was terrible. Bought a 17 pro Max, was $2100.

The first thing I noticed is how laggy and stuttery the phone was for a flagship. Even my $300 Poco phone was smoother and had better software. It was so bad that Spotify was stuttering when simply scrolling.

Not sure if it was a problem with my phone specifically or maybe was just a one-off thing but I ended up returning it.

>but they know right away the issue with the hinge.
they'd know now. during manufacturing probably not raising a concern during random QC testing because it's not in the right conditions to become noticeable. would require foxconn or contractor that made it to reconsider their QC testing, and at a minimum have some fucker physically check parts for defects. those casting issues are so small that it would slip by automated testing but fuck with tolerances enough to break everything. usually with cast products, there's a deburring stage. they all get put into a tumbler with sand or whatever and it grinds off the edges (pic related). probably not being done properly.

>>
>>110174484
When are they gonna start blaming said Korean company for this fubar
>>
>>110175137
I'm sure Apple will first try blaming the user as that is literally their previous game plan ("You're holding it wrong") and if that doesn't work, they will turn on their supplier who then depending on if they really need Apple's business will either eat the blame or push back and say it wasn't us.

It really seems like it was a limited batch of badly installed or machined parts so far so who really knows.

It's more likely that dirt and grit find their way onto the one hinge that's a little too close to the screen, and bang.

I have an S28 Ultra in an Otterbox case when I'm doing more physically demanding stuff or exercising, but I can totally live with my Watch Ultra by itself if I want to go ultra light go swimming. I do main my Fold 8 Ultra though for day to day stuff and shitposting online. I was going to get a Trifold, but I consider that a first gen product too, so I will wait for it to mature first.

seems like a rather common issue

I dont understand how shit like this happens.

When companies make products like these don't they give it to a couple of employees and make them use the product for like a month so they can report any issues they've found before it's mass produced and it's too late?

China had a clone of this shit before it even launched.
Look up xiaomi’s folding phone.
Apple is literally held hostage by china.

it was designed with the help of AI

https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/hinge-apple-breaking-foldable-iphone-built-with-ai
>In light of that fiasco, now feels like a good time to bring up how the hinge was designed: with the help of AI.
>Here’s what Johny Srouji, the company’s chief hardware officer, said during an event last month.
>Per TechCrunch’s coverage: “During manufacturing, we use AI algorithms to precisely match each individual hinge with its best-fit housing to ensure perfect alignment,” Srouji explained, “and a confocal laser progressively scans the topology of every single unit and 3D prints up to 25 micro layers of a custom photopolymer to eliminate residual waviness.”

Sounds like when the iPhone 5 came out, they had systems in the assembly phase that would examine the back panel pieces. And if the angle of the horizontal cut on one panel was off by a hair, it would match it with a neighboring piece with the same matching anomaly.
