What is the most powerful ThinkPad?

Is it normal for a t14g2 to just randomly shut down after I put it to sleep?
Just put it to sleep and came back after an hour to the inital windows login screen and just as I was signing in with my fingerprint the screen went black and it rebooted, showing the lenovo logo.

I just had AI hold my hand to upgrade my T430s that was on Windows 7 to Linux. I never used Linux before. But AI told me to install Zorin OS and helped with every step even when there was an issue with installing the n-video drivers. Now everything just werks. Neat, thanks for reading my blog.

last windows 10 updates completely bricked my battery life it seems
am I the only one? (T480)
>>
>>110141956
I think it's just a bloated piece of shit Anon, that's what's killing your battery life, when I install a fresh 2H22 on my T470, you can just feel the amount of CPU cycles it takes up just to do basic shit, that's battery life being taken, it also could be your battery slowly deteriorating like they do over time, and you're just noticing it Anon, but Windows 10 has always been heavy.
>>
>>110141963
but it feels like an overnight change and besides the windows updates I haven't changed my habits at all that's why I'm kinda dumbfounded
>>
>>110141991
Try installing a fresh 2H22 with updates disabled and see how the battery life is, it's the only way to know, also if you're sticking with Windows you should get Windows 11 since the T480 will install 11 with no tricks unlike my T470 despite them being identical computers with TPM 2.0 secureboot bullshit, but whatever.

If you're not a fan of 11, Get Linux Mint, doesn't even matter if it's the full cinnamon desktop, it will supercharge T480 like you wouldn't even believe, and it's not even magic either, the OS just doesn't have a bunch of garbage running in the background.
>>
>>110142035
isn't windows 11 hot garbage though? Haven't really been keeping up with what people think about it. Maybe it got better since?
>>
>>110142063
Windows 11 is hot garbage Anon, but 10 isn't much better, 11 is so horrific is makes 10 look tolerable, which it is, but as far as sucking system resources, it was an absolute hog compared to Windows 7, which is currently idling at 817MB of RAM in my virtual machine even with stuff cached in there from having used applications, meanwhile on my T470 I can load up 2H22 from cold boot and it will be using 2.8GB of RAM, so something is off with these newer versions of Windows, I like that my collection of T470s are Windows 10 keyed up but the OS has always been horrible compared to Windows 7 and earlier, Microsoft just slammed on the gas when it came to bloat and how many system resources can it take.
>>
>>110142090
alright thanks for the rundown
is it still possible to buy pristine batteries for the T480 you think? Chances are it won't solve anything but you never know
>>
>>110142119
you can find chink ones on ebay for like 30 bucks. I bought a 72Wh one like 2 years ago and it still holds 67Wh (ignore the "fully charged (design)" line, it's not correct)
>>
>>110142119
Unfortunately due to age of the T480 you can't buy OEM Lenovo batteries anymore, and it's a bit of a dice roll that the new Chinese battery you buy is just gonna be "okay" or really good, or not work at all, it's one of the main reasons business laptops fall in value as they age is lack of support from Lenovo, which in an enterprise situation is everything, that's why such capable and good laptops go to recyclers even though it's a beast, the companies want support, that's the main reason why I tell people to not pay a lot for T480 laptops these days despite it being a memed laptop.
>>
>>110142157
>>110142163
thanks, I'll look into it
>>
>>110142090
>compared to Windows 7, which is currently idling at 817MB of RAM in my virtual machine
Absolute bullshit.
Try installing GPU driver and use it on a real machine instead of VM.
It uses 1.5GB on idle just like W10 LTSC.

Win11 on 26H2 isn't too bad and it feels significantly lighter than what it used to be from earlier reiteration. Just run it on Enterprise or Education edition so you can disable the most telemetry possible and debloat with Chris Titus tools and remove AI functions and it's actually very usable. To be honest 11 doesn't do that much more compared to 10 so if you're used to 10 there's almost no need to switch. I also have a Win10 IoT LTSC dual booting with Win 7 on a P51 and the latest update did make the super quick Win 10 a bit slower so I don't know. It didn't eat up my battery life though.

>>110142090
On my VM Win7 is around <1 GB like yours but on my P51 it can go over 4 GB idle but it might be all the Lenovo and Intel and NVIDIA stuff.
>>
>>110142063
>isn't windows 11 hot garbage though?
Yeah, it is. Never install Windows 11. If you think Windows 10 is bad, Windows 11 is much, much worse. Install Windows 10 IoT LTSC instead

Can i use a Raspberry Pi 2B+ to flash a T60 with Libreboot?
The Libreboot website suggests that this is possible after changing the drive strength
>>
>>110146114
>flash a T60 with Libreboot?
Why would you do that? T60 is the last ThinkPad model without the Intel ME backdoor, so I thought that wouldn't be necessary.
>>
>>110146150
>two decade old outdated BIOS with no security updates
yeah, it's a mystery as to why someone would want to flash that
>>
>>110146675
>security updates
You mean adding more backdoors, since the CPU didn't have one? Yeah no thanks. I'm never updooting my T60
>>
>>110146114
I think you can flash T60 and X60 without disassembly.
>>

>>
>>110148864
Every few years, not necessarily every release, and sometimes they walk back some of the bad decisions.
>2012

>2016-2018 depending on model
key travel reduced to 1.8 mm, caps lock light restored, keys next to Enter on ISO layout narrowed (15" version)
>2016-2019 depending on model
classic trackpoint replaced with Elan
>2022
key travel reduced to 1.5 mm, keys next to Enter on ISO layout narrowed (14" version), keyboard as a whole becomes extremely flimsy without the laptop's frame to rest against
>2024
Ctrl and Fn swapped and made the same size (so you can manually swap them back)
>2026
Enter narrowed on ISO layout instead of the previously narrowed keys

I'm comfortable with any T-series keyboard from 2010 to 2021 except the 2012 one without spaces between the F keys. Pre-2010 has me hitting F1 instead of Esc, post-2021 has accidental keypresses from just putting my hands on it and the trackpoint drifts much more often. YMMV.

Hello /tpg/
Got myself a HP ProBook 640 G1 for $50 with i5-4200M, 8 gigs of RAM and 120 gig SSD to play around with and I'll be honest - in some ways it's even better than T440p:
>touchpad with physical buttons out of the box
>no retarded Wi-Fi whitelist
>blazing fast BIOS, OS/boot loader starts as soon as you press the power button
>access to all internals through pulling out just one bottom panel and it holds with a slide mechanism - no need to disassemble whole laptop to do maintenance
>can always be found cheaper because it's not a chinkpad therefore sellers aren't jacking up prices since the cult isn't interested in it
>better dGPU option (Radeon HD8750M), especially for Linux
There are two downsides though:
>no coreboot/libreboot
>half the case is plastic
But both are insignificant if you're not a schizo (besides me_cleaner exists) and take a little bit of care to not drop or smack it.

Not sure Anon, but you really shouldn't even be buying Haswell Thinkpads for use as a laptop because it's so goddamn old for how much people are wanting for it, high dpi ips screens are based but it's not gonna make that haswell chip go faster or use any less energy.

Just bought a P50 and two (2) T480 for like $160 total. Im gonna upgrade one of the T480 to be a daily driver since they're so light. What should I do with the P50 or the other T480? I already have a built precision T7820 tower so I'm not really sure what to do with them (yet).
>>
>>110156650
What's P50's processor? I have a P51 which I dual boot Win7 and Win10 IoT LTSC on (always install older Windows first before newer if you do this) and it is a decent machine for most of my needs. Since it's a workstation it's a bit chunky though so I'd leave it at the desk for the most part. You could just run a server on the other T480 or a backup computer or give it to someone in your family or a friend who really needs one. Could also run some Linux distro too or dual boot it with a Windows. I'm sure you can find good use for your new machines.

Power issues with the CPU and battery drain by default. I have to blacklist drivers and edit the GRUB command line just to get the keyboard working properly and not be stuck in tablet mode. It's not retarded if you get it cheap, what's nice is you have RAM and drive to make it work, which means "for parts or not working" T430 with no ram or drives are an option, and a laptop that can't boot due to missing RAM or drive isn't worth a whole lot.

Boots theory. I like owning thing that lasts.
I bought a new T14 G5 last year and its hinges haven't fall off yet, unlike my last laptop.

It really is a buy once cry once situation with the T series chinkpads, it's crazy to think If I had spent the money bought a T470 in 2017 and loaded it up with 32GB of RAM for the most ridiculous ultrabook ever, that thing would still be holding on as far as processing power for everyday shit and still not running out of memory, and they're so well built it would still be fuckin running

I'll take the depreciated, outdated T470 for 5% the original price through.

norway is a shit country bro, it's a fucking open air prison with a nice view. half a year when it's not shit weather or dark as fuck. The Epstein class corrupt clown politicians don't give a fuck, they just want to get the country into EU and fumble the wealth fond gambling on the US stock market. Women are turbowhores and there's an ongoing chlamydia epidemic that has been there for like a decade or more. Police are stazi tier and the whole society is north korea patrotic group think.

It's not completely retarded, with 4core cpu upgrade it won't even be too underpowered. i7-3740qm is comparable to i7-8650U in terms of performance, but eats 45W, can't hw decode h265 and sucks at opengl.
