I've now followed the "how to clean Linux Mint safely" guide I saw recommended (at least the relevant parts), as well as tried other suggestions, yet my root filesystem is still full. There's just one old kernel, Timeshift has no backups, thumbnails, logs, fonts, and software packages are all gone. I think. The exception is a few gigs of flatpaks which won't delete but I don't think that's the real issue. The only advice I haven't followed was essentially "open disk usage analyzer and delete the junk", because I have no idea what can be deleted. How do I fix this? How do I prevent it filling up again?
>>110118009>The only advice I haven't followed was essentially "open disk usage analyzer and delete the junk", because I have no idea what can be deleted.Post a screenshot of your root folder in the disk usage analyzer so people can see where's the bloat.

I'm on wayland, what top bar/status bar do I use that's minimal and takes very little if no config to setup? I know of noctalia, quickshell, and dankmaterialshell (to be honest I don't even know if these are just bars because of the shell in their name). Tried waybar because it seemed minimal but it needs like two config files and CSS just to show a bunch of broken rainbow boxes on my screen so I got filtered and deleted it
>>110122127>to be honest I don't even know if these are just bars because of the shell in their nameI think some of them pull in extras like a notification OSD and Polkit agent, etc, they try to be more complete which is a good thing because these are things you would have to add yourself anyway.

I have zero Linux experience, looking for a distro for a craptop with these specs:>Intel Celeron N2807 2C/2T @1.58GHz/2.16GHz burst (its a 4.3W SoC from 2014, so just picture an ancient low power Core 2 Duo or something)>4GB RAM>Generic 5400RPM laptop HDDThis is the only laptop I own, haven't used it in years but I'm gonna need a laptop for college just for chromebook-tier tasks. I already tested it with Windows 10 LTSC, and while it is capable of these things, there is too much system overhead for it be used comfortably. The original 8.1 install was much smoother but it has been EoL since 2023, so Linux seems to be the only viable option here. Any ideas? The guide on the thread didn't inspire any confidence.
>>110122127if you don't want to mess with the dotfiles i'd say just go with noctalia
>>110122603linux mint with xfce; consider upgrading to cheap ssd
>>110122127I use noctalia because it's not a ram hog like quickshell. It has a bar (or multiple bars), a launcher, notifications, menus for network, clipboard, sound, etc. Basically it's an entire desktop UI without the deeper system integration traditional DEs have.I used to use all these extra programs like waybar, rofi as a launcher, some notification daemon, etc. and it was a mess. Noctalia just does all that out of the box
>>110122603>Celeron N2807 2C/2TIf youre willing to pay $100 there is far more modern ewaste devices available
>>110122653I do have an old 500GB SATA 3 SSD that is currently unused so it is an immediate option, although I'm not sure if the CPU would help. I'm kind of a techlet so I don't really know. If I already have an option that may work, then why not? It was a gift from my parents when I was a kid, so uding it for the productive use that it was intended for would be a nice sentiment. I don't want to remember this laptop as the goonbook.
>>110122603Maybe antix, use old kernels for better performance, well it will still run newer kernels but it doesn't benefit old computers.
>>110122849>SSD later if it provides any noticeable improvementIt definitely will. I put a cheap ssd into my old thinkpad and it makes a huge difference
>>110122603Your biggest bottleneck is your storage. The rest would work fine with any distro and desktop environment. Here's your options:1. Get an SSD and install any Linux distro you want.2. Keep using the HDD, but be picky to install smaller and simpler distros to avoid your OS having to read from disk too much.Option 2 splits off into 2 sub-options:2.1. Limit yourself to distros with very lightweight DEs or WMs.Stuff like Q4OS with Trinity, MX Linux with Fluxbox, Fedora with Sway, antiX with IceWM/Fluxbox, etc. The lighter/simpler a DE is and the less background services it has, the less busy your HDD will be and the snappier things will feel. Fluxbox, Openbox and Sway specifically are often used in cheap Chinese Linux handhelds that run the OS from a microSD card and have 500MB-2GB of RAM.Slightly heavier but more usable options would be Q4OS with KDE and MX Linux with Xfce.2.2. Install an older distro that is still supported.Ubuntu 16/18/20 LTS and Debian 11 are still supported for a few more years. Older software has less code and features, so you'll save system resources that way. You'll still get security updates with these.
>>110118788kk mo
>>110122849>SSD>if it provides any noticeable improvementIt does. Opening stuff is much faster on an SSD. It's the difference between your system settings opening in 0.5-2 seconds on an SSD vs 2-8 seconds on an HDD. Also since you have a low amount of RAM your OS won't cache things into memory as often, so re-opening your settings will take a while too.Now imagine this difference across hundreds of your system files and services that are used daily.I would personally rather use an ultra-light distro that runs fully in-memory (Porteus, Puppy, antiX, etc.), no matter how minimal/barebones it is, than have to go back to using HDDs (especially ones that old).
I have a question about which distro to use next.I've been on manjaro for my laptops for years but one thing I've come to hate about rolling releases is that if you forget to update for a little while then the next time you do the upgrade itself has issues. The package manager I guess can't resolve some shit sometimes.I'm thinking of going for a non-rolling release but I'm not sure what is good these days for a laptop platform and one that plays nice with video games. It's not a gaming laptop but I don't want to have to struggle to install steam and the indie games that I can enjoy with that. Manjaro has given me no issues there.

What's the fastest(least delay) way I can trigger an event(receive signal in my program) from outside world to my program on Linux?I am making an augmented reality project and I want to see what's the actual effective delay of receiving image from camera and the delay of outputting frame onto a HMD.I can make some simple microcontroller setup to assist this, but how do I synchronize it to a program running my PC? Some way of exclusive access over line in? Serial port? Anything that can be directly read without going through kernel, context switches etc?
>>110145013https://docs.vulkan.org/tutorial/latest/ML_Inference/Embedded_Applications/03_camera_integration.htmluse DMA, set things up so the camera driver puts frame data in a shared memory location your gpu-side program can read from directly, without copying anything

>>110145136Thanks, this might come in handy. I will check if I can set it up with valve index cameras. However my question was rather about receiving a generic signal so I can synchronize cpu and mcu high resolution timers. Eg so I could eg make a diode light up, record the timestamp on mcu, and record the timestamp when my program receives that bright frame and compare. And the reverse for displaying image back in HMD.
>>110145218well the method would depend on where the signal is coming from, but generally speaking you want things set up so you have the kernel tell your program when something happens, and if large data is involved, a shared memory location pointer your program can use directly without needing to copy the datayou can't really go faster than the kernel, if you need something even faster than that then you'd need a real time os (though there are some real time related stuff for linux, it's probably overkill for an AR project)

Wait, you can burn the modified Win10/11 ISO when you use Rufus then just put it in Ventoy?I did not know you could do that. I guess I'll free up a USB drive then.
When people talk about bleeding edge distros, what benefit does that actually bring to you? And I don't mean>It gives me updates fasterI mean what updates and why was it worth your time exactly to get them before anyone else when you apparently also have to deal with the occassional "breakage" (no one seems to cite anything tangible with this either its just "something broke")? I want to try Arch because it seems like it has a lot of packages but idk about the whole bleeding edge thing and for like the 100th time I've heard some sweeping statement like "it broke" or "its rolling release" I have literally zero ability to know what you mean or how it would make it worth/not worth it to me. If anyone knows of a distro that's maybe not "bleeding edge" but still has a good amount of software (thats also not nix) feel free to let me know too thanks.

(yes, NTFS works even if it's not in the spec (you may need it as Windows installer has files exceeding the 4GiB limit))

today i learned that hyprland (and probably others) can change keyboard/trackpad/mouse binds, based on the app you're hovering over. neat.
>>110138132No. It just looks fucking stock Xfce at first. Just install unattended-upgrades if you want security updates installed automatically or run sudo apt -U upgrade at the end of the day (this is a combined update and upgrade command for apt 3 which is in Debian 13). If using the Debian installer, read the part where it asks for the root account password - leave the password blank (disables the use of logging in as root) and you will get sudo automatically set up for your user.
how functional is xfce?im thinking of going with it this time on arch instead of plasma or gnome

WHAT THE FUCK AM I LOOKING AT
I asked this in windows thread too, anybody here have any experience with dual booting? I have a NVME SSD that I use for my Windows 11 Install, it's a local account, no bitlocker encryption, and no fast boot. I also have another Sata SSD and I thought I could use it to experiment with Linux, have some fun, and also play pirated games and avoid pozzing up my main OS and putting my data at risk. Can a virus from another OS hop onto my other drives and cause issues? Can installing linux cause issues to windows in general with updates? I don't really care if my linux install gets messed up, primarily worried about it touching my Windows install where I have more personal data.
