anyone into bouldering here or any type of climbing for that matter? any tips for newer climbers? how do you care for your hands? i have some flappers and a broken nail which i ripped off due to bad technique

    >always stretch and warmup
    >trim nails weekly
    >rest when you get injured
Can't really avoid flappers unless you never fall or mess up

that's something i tend to ignore. in one month i had a pulley injury, arm tendon pain and weakness in my arm, broken nail and two broken flappers. but the sport is too addicting

Bouldering is not a substitute for having a personality.

people often talk how climbers are these obnoxious leftists, but i haven't met a single one in 3 gyms i regularly visit. it's mostly gymbros and teenagers who train for competitions. it must be an american thing

Yes. I really enjoy bouldering. It gets a bad rep because of some of the leftoid freaks who boulder, but you can make your own adventure with it and have fun with your friends

You will have hand skin problems in the beginning. Make sure to shave down your calluses. I use a "ped egg" but sandpaper works too. Flappers will set you back so nip them in the bud

    I should also mention

Don't get ahead of yourself and start hangboarding until youve been bouldering for at least a year and a half. Your tendons need a lot of time to strengthen properly before you put them under excess load, and a pulley tear will genuinely fuck your life up. It's not worth the risk

Climbing shoes are really expensive right now if you're in the US because of tariffs So try to buy used from REI or eBay. Try them on in-store first of course

It will be so much fun anon, I'm glad you're starting this new hobby

It's like the only activity where people will talk with me and I get to hang out with solving boulder problems.

Listen to your fingers. Compared to muscles they don't give great pain signals so ignoring the ones you do get will lead you to snap city.

If you're going to hangboard do it with proper form. Eccentric motion (i.e. opening of your fingers) under load is pretty bad for them.

What are some good climbing shoes to start with?

    >I took up bouldering last year cause I'm travelling for work and there was a climbing gym right next to me when I was in Albuquerque. Basically every place I've been doing work I sign up for the month or whatever I'll be there.
    >In Texas now and can do pretty much all the V4s at my gym and one or two of the V5s.
    >Working long hours so can only get in like 1 hour to 90 minute sessions if I go during the week.
    >Got off early on Monday so arrived there much earlier than usual and thought I'd get in a good long session.
    >Do my usual warm up by climbing a few of the autobelay routes.
    >Decide to do a few of the V4s I've already done loads of times.
    >Standing on two tiny foot holds while holding a small crimp from the side with just my middle and ring fingers of my right hand.
    >Reach over my head with my left arm to get the next hold.
    >Foot slips.
    >"Fuck this, I'm not falling"
    >Pull on crimp with all my strength
    >Feel pain shooting up my arm
    >It now hurts to bend my ring finger at all.

Yeah, I fucked up a flexor tendon.
I've never actually gotten a climbing injury before other than ripping off callouses or abrasions from the wall.
I suppose I'm meant to rest for a while?

Managed to send my first 7A yesterday and I'm feeling unstoppable

    >I suppose I'm meant to rest for a while?
Yeah just lay off climbing for a while, check to see if it improves any and if not, might have to go to sports rehab.

    >any tips for newer climbers?
It might look cringe and feel unnecessary, but bare minimum do some dynamic stretching for your ankles and wrists. Do wrist rolls and ankle circles both ways. Then, when you warm up on the wall, do the easiest boulders in the gym and try to "overcomplicate" the climbing to drill fundamentals. Dont just muscle yourself up the wall because the route is easy, try to make every move as effortless as possible, every position as comfortable as possible. I ramp up my warmups by doing 1-2 of the lowest grade, then some of the next grade and work myself up like that to get the body warm and the movements primed without being on routes that strain myself before my body has had time to get ready
And dont jump off the wall from up high when you finish a boulder. It looks cool and is efficient but you will fuck your knees up. My friend is battling knee pain right now from doing so while I always downclimb at least half the wall before I drop and I havent felt any displeasure so far
    >how do you care for your hands?
Biggest thing I had to learn was to stop climbing when gripping holds starts to sting. Your muscles will initially feel like they still have juice in the tank but your skin will scream for you to stop climbing and you have to do that.

Your personality is being on the internet too much. Climbing is fun, people go climbing to have fun, even chimps and gibbons know this

    >And dont jump off the wall from up high when you finish a boulder. It looks cool and is efficient but you will fuck your knees up.
yeah i've been feeling pain in my knees from jumping down, and i'm pretty light. i also prefer downclimbing because you have to think about technique more, and you get forearm pump
    >>
in three months of bouldering i got from 1 pullup to 8 with good form. should i start doing weighted pullups? and is it better to do compounds before or after climbing session? i usually climb 2-3 hours
