    Advice for new runners:
    - Build up speed and mileage SLOOOOOWLY (start with 15 minutes, increase mileage at most 10% per week);
    - It will feel like you're going slow, you are; don't worry about setting good times for a couple of months;
    - If you start to feel pain anywhere, stop and rest;
    - Don't try to copy what pros are doing. Do what feels natural; and
    - Once you can comfortably roon 6 miles/10km, start thinking about a goal in terms of race distance and time, and look for a training plan for that goal (see below for suggested plans).

Forgive me father for today I walked.

Weather's going to be so shit here this weekend that I may have to do my long run on a tr**dm*ll at the gym.
    >>
    >>77580267
Same. 15km for about 1h40min on a treadmill. I guess I will just watch other people in the gym to not get too bored. Should I bring a gel?
    >>
    >>77580276
    >Should I bring a gel?
Definitely. Only benefit of running on a treadmill is that you can bring all the gels and water you want.
    >I guess I will just watch other people in the gym to not get too bored
The treadmills at my gym face an empty parking lot. I'll probably just put on a podcast and zone out.

I have a half marathon in 4 weeks and the longest run I've done is 10k. But I am in good 5k shape so I'm going to try to break 80 minutes. Don't try this at home.
    >>
    >>77580267
How shit? It would have to be a storm for me to consider the tr*eadmill for a long run. Even 30 minutes is bad enough. I find shitty weather is only bad for the first few minutes then you just get used to it.
    >>
    >>77580431
Storm Austen, wind force 6-7 plus rain all weekend. I haven't been on a treadmill in 15 years probably, but I'm laying the groundwork for a half marathon next spring so I want to stay consistent with my training.

64 just now, seems about right, but I don't wear a heart rate monitor so I dunno what it'd average out to. It was somewhere in the mid 80s just a few months back when I starting running. Surprising how quickly it changes.

Running a marathon this weekend. Ever since my last 21mi long run my leg has been acting up and I've been dealing with tendonitis. It's feeling okay rn but my knee is still tight and my shin hurts a bit. I'll use KT tape to patch it up and hope I can finish the race.

Any last minute tips to help me get across the finish line?
    >>
    >>77581116
Isometrics temporarily alleviate pain, but generally the long-term fix is to strengthen the tendons. First with controlled weightlifting focusing on the eccentric, but then with plyometrics.
But it's way too late for you now. Just try doing some pogo hops and squat jumps a couple of times today and during your race warmup tomorrow, and hope you don't make it worse.

I started from nothing, the only thing I had going for me was not being overweight. In a few months I could probably do a 7min mile, though I haven't tried, I generally do longer distances or intervals. My best mile was ~7:40 but that was while running 3 miles I think. I could probably get it to 7mins, if not now then by the time I hit the 6 month mark.

Just takes consistency. Even easier if you aren't in your 30s.

Well my hilly parkrun was cancelled today due to weather so I'll have to crack 30 mins there next week. I drove an hour to get to a different one, much flatter, bit undulating as you go but way better than what I am used to. Absolutely soaked through though, it was hard to breathe honestly with my shirt stuck to me in the wet. Also I couldn't see through my glasses very well.

So about half way through I was feeling shattered, thinking about walking, when a guy goes past saying he was helping this guy to get a PB, I said I was going for one as well, he said well you're on for about 25mins so far. Couldn't fucking believe that so I just kept going, ended up with 26:45. Dead chuffed, about 4 mins faster than last week, mostly because there was no massive hill at the end.

First time doing a different 5k so it's good to know what I can do on a flat-ish course. Actually looking it up now, it's apparently a 31m elevation gain, huh, didn't realise it was that much. I guess compared to the 125m I'm used to it didn't feel like a lot.
    >>
    >>77582071
Nicely done man, especially given the weather conditions.
    >>
    >>77581963
makes no sense unless you're doing crazy shit in between the runs to ruin your gains. you are probably much fitter but you don't realize. run a 5k time trial and see what you get
    >>
    >>77582071
125m in 5k is crazy hilly, bordering on mountainous. no wonder you are much faster. those hills will make you strong
    >>
    >>77581700
Ok, in comparison the watts seem really low for some reason. Maybe just inaccurate from Garmin. I have almost the same stats overall, also Garmin, 20s slower: Almost 500W
    >>
    >>77581116
If you run that marathon you will probably come to regret it with the pain and extended recovery that follows, don't do it nigger
    >>
    >>77580995
45 avg last year, 44 avg this year. Not sure if the true baseline has shifted or i just chilled out more. I tend to have like 39-42bpm rhr, then I do a hard run and it is like 47, 45, back to the lower rhr. So it kinda oscillates like that. I wonder if it will drop even further should I up my mileage seriously or if this range is kind of already near some sort of natural limit. Would love to be solidly in the 30s just to troll medical professionals tho

    >average cadence 188 spm
Do you actively try to run at a high cadence or is that just your natural stride? I'm usually somewhere in the low 160s running at that pace, even when I try to focus on my form.
    >>
    >>77584485
I made a concentrated effort to increase my cadence a while back, but now it's kind of natural. Higher cadence is supposed to reduce risk of injury, but who knows. I used to be in the mid-190s but that was probably too high.

    >>77584485
It doesn’t matter all that much if you aren’t overstriding. Your cadence depends a lot on how fast you are running. If you have a long stride your cadence will be low. This is me running this morning at 6:50 on average per mile for 16 miles. my cadence drops into the 160s when I am running slower than 7 minutes per mile and rises closer to 180 at 6:15-6:20 per mile.

How the fuck do you run slower?
I've been doing 5K runs 2 or 3 times a week for the last couple of months just to keep myself fit (I'm stuck in Texas for work so can't go hillwalking every week list I'd normally do).
I've been looking at running longer distances and the general advice is to run slower while building up distance.
My 5K time is 22-23 minutes on a normal day.
I tried running slower and it felt awkward as fuck like I was going so slow I was going to just fall over and ended up doing the 5K in like 1 minute slower than my usual time.

Stop listening to influencers who don’t know what the fuck they’re talking about. You’re already faster than almost all of them. The advice to run comically slow only applies to fat people who are going to kill themselves if they don’t. Don’t go balls to the wall every time you run. Literally just slow down by whatever feels like will get you to comfortably run for 30 minutes and repeat that as your easy say for now. No need to overcomplicate it. Slowing down to the point that you alter your mechanics just ingrains bad habits.

    Where’s a good place I can measure a 300 meter sprint?

I need to do a self evaluation before a test for a job I want.
They also want this sprint to be under a minute at minimum. I am a terrible sprinter. So ideally, I’d also like a place to train before the real test.
    >>
is there a running speed where you actually start feeling fast and athletic? like an 18 minute 5k or something? i'm around the 21-22 min mark but i do my easy runs really slow and i just feel like a performative faggot most of the time i run in public desu
    >>

nobody is paying any attention to you and 22 is still faster than most. just run and don't be worrying about silly things.

If you don't have access to a track then I'd just find a nice straight flat bit of road. Ideally a bike lane so you don't have to worry about cars.

I think they just love anything that makes them look good like GPAs, certifications, "doctor, lawyer, engineer" etc. Of course they often don't perform amazingly but they will still look good to their peers when they finished a 5k "marathon" or a half MARATHON. Idk in general people are just impressed if someone does a marathon at all most people seem to think the distance is impressive somehow even if people take 6 hours to do so.

So comfy running in the suburbs vs the big city. Everyone smiling and waving at one another. Provincial small-town cuties and milfs. My 98kg ass finally did a 5k last night and clocked 19:40. My reaction was cool, have a baseline to train and drop weight against over the next 7 months. Not very fast.

The reactions of "fit" normies so far has been like I did a sub 2:30 marathon. I swear these people have never done any actual aerobic sports, yet they all claim to run 2-3 times a week.

So it's black friday and shit soon, and I need new shoes.
I have gel venture 11s, they've been good to me, I think, but they're kinda busted now.

Any similar recommendations for shoes about the same price, or where the price could go down around there on sale? If not I'll try to just get them again from Amazon or something.
I run ~4x11km and 1x15~17km per week (I run by time not distance so it slowly goes up over time), mostly on countryside roads and paths, so there's some regular road until I get there, then a lot of busted road, some stonepaths, some gravel, dirt, grass, mud, snow, and I still go out when it rains or what.

Make sure you refill your carbs after your runs. The muscles stay in a carb sucking mode for quite a while after a decent run and it's easy to get into this weird vibe where your body releases stress hormones or whatever because there isnt enough glucose. I guess going for a good amount of complex carbs in your dinner is best and also replenish after a run with chocolate milk or something, maybe dates.

I think some milk when already in this vibe kinda helps too because of the protein and fat. like it isn't much sugar but it gives your body some actual good nutrients so it chills out.

Not that anon but I got myself a Coros armband heart rate monitor recently and I don’t regret it. My Garmin is actually generally accurate on heart rate but I have had it get stuck in “cadence lock” before on key runs and leave me with no good heart rate data for 20 miles. The arm band is like an insurance policy. I don’t actually look at my heart rate during runs unless I’m stopped at a stoplight or something and I seem my average for the run, so I really only use this for data collection and looking at the run afterwards to make sure I didn’t overdo it. It’s not strictly necessary imo
