Why are clerks in brand name stores so snooty and cringe?

They feel like they're giving you the cure for cancer instead of some marked up made in china resell

It's such bizarre behavior. They seem to think they are doing you a favor for interacting with you and doing their jobs lmao

This does not inspire passion or loyalty for their brands at all
    >>
you're a retarded moron who doesn't understand how the world works. you think you have this whole thing figured out better than the richest brands on earth? you think you know more about making money than companies that often make more than entire nations?

luxury sales associates being assholes isn't a bug it's a feature.

you are supposed to feel insecure as shit.

you are supposed to want to spend money to impress / dunk on the sales associate.

they are supposed to warm up to you when you spend.

you are supposed to feel like you won somehow.

you are supposed to keep going back and spending more to catch that high.

you are supposed to feel terrified of having to return anything.

you are supposed to watch them be assholes to other people and feel special they're nice to you now.

this is basic fucking psychology, it was mapped out decades ago, these companies have been employing this shit to print money.

then you, like the absolute fucking idiot you are, think you know better and they would make more if they were nice to people.

    no they fucking wouldn't.

because that already exists. there are tons of cheap mass market stores in the mall where the sales associates are instructed to bend over backwards and suck the customers dick. you know what happens? people treat those stores like shit. they use those stores for entertainment. walk in, try shit on and leave. if they do rarely buy something half the time they return it.

they walk all over the employees at those stores. they don't think "wow the sales associates here are so nice, I'll spend lots of money". they think "why the fuck are these people sucking up to me, what losers, this place is obviously for lames".

There is a simple way to defeat them. Send in the Indians. That is their kryptonite. Put in a tech company near the store and Indians will make their lives miserable. They will talk down to them, destroy their store, and bring in 4 generations at once while touching everything and attempting to haggle. They will have to air out clothes they try on for hours with a fan.

No wonder hundreds of retail stores are closing, as people would rather talk with an SI (formerly AI) agent on a webpage than deal with this bullshit. "Consumer trends" are the primary reason in other words people are sick of this shit and prefer to buy online. Hermes is the most notorious for uppity behavior and they only have about 300 stores worldwide. Even fast fashion stores have adopted the mindset of "buy or gtfo, no returns ever" that is killing mall stores. There is only one benefit to buying in-store versus buying online and that is you can try on the clothing first. There has been a major change in people buying based on measurements, and speaking of the average person's measurements they won't fit into luxury clothing (average American female has a 38" waist). You experience a shitty sales experience once and never return as a loyal customer because you learn your very expensive lesson.

    Benefits of buying online:
    >more in-stock options, never show up wanting something and have it be out of stock at a tiny store
    >don't have to deal with sales reps
    >don't have to drive to the mall, find parking, deal with inner city youths who are window shopping
    >gain real information from online reviews and communities instead of an untrustworthy rep
    >returns are a simple trip to the post office and not looked down on
    >price reductions happen more often online
    >have a relaxing, informed experience rather than a psychological battle

The pandemic started it, there was a brief resurgence, then in 2024 stores started closing down en masse.

Nobody in the upper middle class has money to waste on this shit anymore. I doubt that service is the reason "luxury" clothes is taking a hit compared to massive unhinged inflation for the last 6 years. There are better clothes unattached to the logo and the kind of newer money upper middle class who fall for this shit are exactly who aren't going to be wasting their debased money on it.

    >>18781801
ran out of characters but to continue:
    >Gen Z is opting for second-hand, replicas, and out of season clothing
If I can buy a jacket for $1000 when it retailed 6 months earlier for $4000 I'm simply going to wait until it's no longer in season to buy it. Also, there's a major abundance of new-never-worn clothing that simply didn't sell at retail and is being marked down by up to 80%. The reason for this is the luxury fashion boom is over and it takes brands time to adjust and unlike fast fashion they don't simply burn stock that didn't sell.
    >uninspired, re-released designs
A big aspect of buying luxury is getting something that nobody else around you has. Why buy 2026 pieces when you can get a 2021 piece that looks identical except for maybe a wayward pocket or seam.
    >as mentioned earlier younger customers are happy waiting up to years to get pieces they have their eye on
I bought a piece, brand new condition, for 15% of what it retailed for by waiting 3 years. Customers are increasingly patient.
    >rise of curators
Curators rarely buy shit with brand logos strewn all over it because they know that shit doesn't hold value. They favor inspired, unique designs that are interesting but maybe not 'timeless'
    >trend away from classic 'timeless' clothing
Modern clothing is actually very uniform. More people are willing and able (due to relaxed work requirements) to wear more interesting clothing. I make decent money and haven't bought a suit or button down shirt in years, I get to dress basically however I want when I have to go into the office.
    >rise in athleisure and 'comfy' clothing
As everyone gets fatter or more muscular they prefer to wear clothes that are less restricting and are more open to wearing mixed-cloth fabrics with spandex in it. The only people who care about the actual quality have a specific look in mind and view form over function, this represents a tiny amount of consumers.

tl;dr "changing consumer choices" have led people away from luxury
    >>
    >>18781803
Yes, good point. Luxury fashion doesn't hold value. Higher-quality artisanal fashion does. Then there's 'beater' clothing that looks cool and is cheap.
    >>
Don’t go to big name stores. Let them die as they deserve.
    >>
    >>18781816
I don't think these people are reselling either. Most people don't resell clothes they just give them to goodwill. They're just bad value. At least tool clothes have a reason to cost more or specifically a leather goods or wool goods band. Fashion brands are shit and it's just trend. There is bery little difference between zara and some "fashion house". Both are faked trends and not like a company who just does one thing well like quoddy with moccasins or pendleton with wool shit. You're getting inauthentic clothes with a logo on it and that logo is only going to carry so far.
    >>
    >>18781812
Indians literally destroy the fashion retailer. They destroy everything, make clothes reek of body odor, then attempt to haggle
    >>
    >>18781875
Tons of people are reselling, look at how many resale sites have popped up just in the past few years. Once a trend takes hold individual pieces may be passed around half a dozen times before they finally fall off. I've made thousands of dollars reselling. People like to see that the choices they make are in demand.
As for your other point, to use boots as an example: you can find blake-stitched boots from Saint Laurent but not from Zara. They can be resoled and won't fall apart as easily which speaks to quality and craftsmanship not just a logo. At the same time most imitation pieces by fast fashion incorporate polyester trash when the original piece is made from pure wool or cotton.

I'm not a proponent of luxury fashion for the most part because you are right it's been needlessly inflated in price despite the quality decreasing compared to earlier iterations. Perhaps this is why there are so many people focused on buying used items.
    >>
    >>18781699
the majority of their sales revenue comes from lower/middle class people. by acting this way, it accentuates the feeling of inferiority they have and increases the desire to prove themselves to be "above" their social class, which takes the form of buying things. so it's a sales tactic
    >>

If I want luxury goods, I scour vintage from 1stDibs and try to find it on eBay or Depop for a fraction of the price. The exception is probably luxury bags and dresses which are fairly priced, but shit like coats are always $1-200 relative to the $2k asking price on FD. I will never pay for inferior quality. Brands like Louis Vuitton figured out they can sell plastic for thousands as long as it’s monogrammed bc they’re status signifiers. Hell, even “rich” people will cough it up for inferior products just to shop somewhere the poors cannot. I buy ornate things simply because that quality is art and hard to come by, and I cannot afford to wear cheap.
    >>
    >>18781749
This sounds retarded but is honestly partially true. I've seen it work especially well on certain eurotrash brands that are aimed at third worlders with "face cutlture" or things like izzat, arabs, chinese, russians, etc. If you go into a Kering/LVMH group shop especially in any tourist trap european city, this is their entire business model, tricking indians/chinese into thinking they've regained face by spending 5 figures minimum.

On the other side of this there's other designer shops not aimed at this demographic where the staff are generally chill and helpful, dover street market, aime leon dore (at least in London), ralph laurens flagship with all the purple label stuff in New York.

P.s. to further back-up what I said, I've been in burberrys in America and Europe, and the staff were far more helpful and there was less of this snobby act in America, likely because it was in a medium sized American city that doesn't see a lot of tourists as opposed to a European capital full of third world trophy-wives for local oligarchs

    >>18781801

Luxury retail stores are not closing because of this. They're closing for a myriad of reasons but their sales associates being assholes is not one of them. You are also missing the part where the sales associates become your best friend after you start spending. From the outside you only see the luxury store as a place where the staff are rude to people. In reality it's actually a friendship simulator for the people who are actually spending money there.
    >>
    >>18781812

Nigga I've got A60 eyes and I worked in luxury sales for close to 3 years for a brand everyone on this board knows. I also rarely employed this strategy because I worked in the mens department but when I moved to handbags near the end I basically had to do this shit because of how well it worked. It also 100% works on white people but it works best with the SA being the opposite gender of the customer.

As I said before this is basic psychology. If you walk into a store and someone is nice to you the first time you meet them, you take that for granted. BUT, if you walk into a store and someone ignores you and is kind of cold to you, that is now your baseline. If however a few moments later when you ask for a different size, they spring into action and get you what you need and offer you a drink, and start complimenting you on your shoes, all of a sudden you don't take their niceness for granted. You actually value it even more having seen them be a prick originally and now they're nice. You actually now feel you have more rapport with this person than the associate that treated you great from the start. You now want to spend more because you feel like this person went the extra mile.

This isn't even limited to luxury sales. Female bartenders do this ALL the time to get tips. They're literally trained to act like a bitch and then warm up over the course of the night. People love this shit. They love to feel like they won someone over. It has nothing to do with skin colour it works on everyone.

But you can't just be nice from the jump, as I said you do that you get walked all over. People treat you like the help. If you act superior from the start and then the roles reverse, people actually end up wanting to please you.

But I don't expect you to understand any of this cause you're some pavement ape who learnt what izzat was yesterday and now wants to use it everywhere.

I literally managed a luxury store at one point, after having worked the floor for years. I was also actually bad at clienteling and basically got kicked upstairs into management because I'm not a psychopath. The stuff I described is exactly how you're supposed to do it and the people who make six figures on commission are fucking gods at it. All it takes is for you to be completely soulless and down to manipulate the shit out of people.

    >>18783066
Hobos don't get any kind of treatment. They get lied to and told the store is by appointment only so they leave quickly and quietly.

    >>18783274
How do I unsubscribe from your blog?

    >>18783338
You're right that plenty of luxury stores don't operate like this. It usually has everything to do with the commission structure. Which is also an indirect reason for SA's acting like assholes. If you can tell someone isn't going to spend it literally ends up costing you money to help them. There are genuinely people who will come in and talk to you for 2 hours and not buy anything. Meanwhile as you're helping them, a big spender walks in and gets helped by someone else who ends up getting a $3,000 commission while you got $40 in hourly wages. You get a sixth sense for these tire kickers after long enough and so you're just rude to them off the rip.

But the types of independent boutiques you're talking about usually don't have any commission at all. They'll usually just have a staff discount and clothing allowance while making a decent hourly wage. So those people really have zero incentive to engage in any sort of mind games.

But the reality is if you want to make real money you go to the stores with commission, and no matter what type of person you are if you have 2 bad months in a row and can barely pay rent you will start being an asshole and employing all the mind games and tactics that lead you to playing friendship simulator for rich people and consistently getting sales.

I know someone who worked at a luxury boutique and now has his own brand. He bashes his friends constantly for not buying his boring overpriced clothes. People don't want their first impression to be a bad one, especially with rising costs and lower quality. What is there to talk about with a sales associate who is your "friend" that's the biggest joke.
    >>
    >>18781699
how do you present in these stores? I have a client who sells expensive clothes, and he says he might give attitude to people if he thinks they are just their to window shop, which takes up his time and leads to no money for him.
    >>
    >>18781749
I sell luxury cars. Obviously different products, different price tags, finance available etc. But I question why this is necessary to sell clothes/handbags but not cars.
    >you are supposed to feel like you won somehow.
This is the only part I can relate to but the "win" is either that a feature or component is neat, or the ownership being frictionless somehow

No, you are literally too stupid to understand the dynamic that is going on. Going from cold to hot to manipulate someone into thinking you warmed up to them has nothing to do with izzat.

From your very first post in this thread you 1) thought I was brown and then 2) thought I've only been talking about brown people. This is a technique that's used across the world and in various industries that has absolutely nothing to fucking do with izzat.

I seriously think you learnt that word a week ago and now feel determined to shoe horn it into every conversation you can. Retard.

    >>18783654
    >People don't want their first impression to be a bad one, especially with rising costs and lower quality.

Listen, people are not down to spend thousands of dollars at a store they think is beneath them. When you are nice to people off the rip you give off the energy of a Walmart Greeter. If you think a store is much cooler than you are, you become willing to spend huge amounts of money there to hopefully capture some of that coolness for yourself. I don't make the rules. Just re-read the very first reply in this thread. That's me, telling people like you, billion dollar brands have spent vast sums of money researching consumer behaviour and psychology and have all come to the same conclusion about this. You don't know better than them.

    >What is there to talk about with a sales associate who is your "friend" that's the biggest joke.

Why do men spend thousands of dollars on escorts if they're not actually their "girlfriends". You obviously have autism or something, I don't know how to break it down any simpler. The entire fucking point is the customer thinks they have genuinely won the sales associate over and become their actual friend and that it's deeper than just business. That is how the whole song and dance works you ignoramus.
    >>
    >>18783884
How often are you selling someone a luxury car? If you have a good client do they come back and buy a car every year? What about every month? You have any customers who come back every week and buy a car? Because that is the goal with luxury clothing clienteling. That you hook someone and you are getting them to spend every single week. Because clothing brands get new deliveries every week. It's obviously totally different than luxury cars where you are trying to convince someone to spend a huge amount of money one time. Clothes you can also get someone to spend $100K+ but it's spread out over the course a year+ that requires an entirely different approach to keep someone routinely coming back week after week, month after month, year after year.

    >>18783947

Actually at least half of sales are to returning customers. Some files go back decades. It's part of a clients image that they have the new model every year. Sometimes that includes a car for the wife or a kid as well. We send birthday card and wedding anniversary cards sometimes.

Wasn't even a luxury location i had a Dillards Suit salesman tell me that most people don't need a thousand dollar suit(with shoes) for their bullshit meeting with CEO whatever. He recommended getting 5 pairs from a goodwill, spending time on getting it tailored and sending it to the cleaners to find the fit/material/designs you are actually looking for before dipping your toes into a big purchase for something you might grow out of.
    >>
It is called the pretty woman effect named after that Julia Roberts movie where the whore goes back to the luxury store to rub in how much money she could have spent if they had been nicer to her, that's it. They hope you need some sort of come-uppance by being nasty to you so you will spend more money because the sales people get a commission for every item sold and they receive additional bonuses if they reach certain amounts per transaction. Even Oprah was subject to this in Switzerland.
