I'm Hispanic and I don't care way too much about stuff like Coco or Jorge Gutierrez's cartoons. I need your respectful opinion on this.
La verdad no me importa lo que sea con tal de que tenga una buena historia y sea una serie entretenida.
No. But im a white male. My favorite cartoons are animal people, mutants, robots, nonwhites, aliens, women, etc.I never really consider needing representation but maybe I just twke kr for granted because a quarter of the world is made for me
>>156139983Im black and personally its not a deal breaker to me if a show or media doesn't have black people in it and im not represented cause if its good its good but i do like being represented when it happens and feel its a net postive. cause i feel its just more interesting having more diversity in terms of background or designs since when its done well i could feel the author actually gave a shit and tired if it hat made sense(Not a /co/ example but it part of the reason why i feel myself liking anime like dungeon meshi and witch hat atiler more then stuff like frieren since even if all three are great story wise, dugeon meshi and wha having more diverse and interesting design in terms of skin tone which makes it feel like the creator cared more compared to frieren with everyone being deathly pale and the designs being just alright . it has little baring on the story but it just nice to see when its there as a bonus)
>>156139983Literally nothing has ever represented me.
>>156139983For me, if the show doesn't have a group I'm a part of it's whatever. If they do have a group I'm a part of and they fuck it up, that's when I get upset.Hence why a lot of "progressive" cartoons piss me off especially when it's obvious a fujo wrote it for her straight girl friends. Even worse when a man does the same thing. That being said, when most people clamour about representation, I think it's because people would rather have stories about them being told by themselves and not someone from the outside looking in assuming what they want.
>>156139983Chinese American hereI loved Jake Long, Xiaolin Showdown, Mulan, and Jackie Chan Adventures as a kid but it didn't really occur to me that I liked those shows because they starred Chinese charactersI totally understand why people think representation is important and I get why it could be egregious when it's not present (for example, it'd be dishonest to portray San Francisco in fiction if it was solely white people) but it's not something I feel should be measured via quotas
>>156139983Name 3 "brown haired white boy goes one adventures with his friends" cartoons.
>>156139983People constantly seething about viewers not appearing for their more "modern audience" coded shows and instead retvrning to the older ones makes me think people who say stuff like this are not actually giving their real opinion.Like, sure, you can have new shows. But then it will feel a little silly if it proceeds to flop afterwards and you screech that the chuds should have supported it when it's not for them...as they said. They're implying the "queer audience" focused shows are superior, which is just not the case actually. Most of the "lore" shit dumped out by those fans is focused on how 'heckin qweer' the characters are as opposed to genuinely examining themes as a work of fiction anyway. IMO it's because they refuse to look beyond their topic myopically, which is why they always demand to have at least on-the-face visual representation even if it affects the story or plot. There's no space for any other kinds of 'representation' even if it's pretty damn rare.I'm a 'jungle asian' and the most I get out of racial representation is a, "oh cool" kind of feeling, especially if they incorporate aspects of my culture, but I don't mind not seeing it because I'm not neurotically focused on my race.
I'm gay and I literally do not care about "queer" representation. Not in a self-hating or pick-me sense, but rather because gay male rep is dictated by fujos and they/thems who will be normal heterosexuals by age 30.
>>156140164>for example, it'd be dishonest to portray San FranciscoThat's not what san Francisco is known for.
I think it matters to kids. But not to adults. Kids have a greater need to see themselves reflected. Or their world/circumstances.>>156140108Never seen that one but isn't it modeled after European fantasy? Which means german/English? Wouldn't it be more authentic to the era? (Also why is Japan so constantly doing that setting for fantasy stuff. Weird)
>>156139983>>156140157Actually, adding onto this. I don't really care if I get tomatoes thrown at me but this is a perfect example. Nightshade in Earthspark is a fully realized character with interests, foibles and aspirations like everyone else. Their character bounces off well with others and they have very good arcs. Also I'm just a fan of gothy nerd characters. But!! Because of how they were introduced, it turned a lot of people off. (The Fox news incident did not help either). If the writer literally didn't turn Nightshade into the classic "Lgbt lesson for normies" bit, I doubt Earthspark wouldn't have been nearly as cucked as it was post S1.
>>156140196>I think it matters to kids. But not to adults. Kids have a greater need to see themselves reflected. Or their world/circumstances.Not kids, women. It's an extremely well documented psychological effect. Males want to be like fictional characters they like, women want fictional characters to be like them.
>>156140209I think that kids are way more impressionable. But honestly my first thought was like pre school stuff lol. I think it's developmentally important for kids to see themselves reflected and that there's people that aren't like them too. With older it dies seem to skew to women. Yeah.
>>156139983I have a very simple rule for this: "If you advertise or draw excessive attention to minority presence, it's not representation, it's tokenism."
>>156140196>I think it matters to kids. But not to adults. Kids have a greater need to see themselves reflected. Or their world/circumstancesYeah, that's exactly what I was thinking while watching transformers and tmnt back in the day. How does Optimus shooting decepticons effect me personally?
I actually hated when cartoons did the whole>and the star of the show is a cool 8-11 year old boy JUST LIKE YOU!thing, because I knew I was being pandered to. Any show like Ben 10, for example, was an instant turn-off to me as a kid precisely because I knew the creators intended on Ben being a self-insert for me to latch onto and buy their toys. I was much more interested in shows where the protagonists were fun characters rather than relating to them on some basis of personal identity. I didn’t watch American Dragon Jake Long as a kid not because he was Asian, but because Jake felt like a lame-ass character they expected me to find “cool” as a boy in their target demographic.Representation is great, it only becomes a problem when there’s ulterior motives like what I described. They wanted to sell me shit instead of making an entertaining cartoon in its own right.
No, as a foreigner the appeal of US media to me is it being US media that is different to what is the local media from my country, I come from spicland and when was a kid I binge watched any show from the US even if I don't care at all about American Football, and my favorite movies were Will Smith movies despite being a white Latino because they were enjoyable and he had charisma, I don't care about Marco Diaz, I like the Madrigal Family in spite of me not caring of how accurate they are to a 50s Colombian family, I liked Star Vs because I liked Star and its lore and I tolerate Encanto thanks to its music and animation. The only people that care about representation in media are those who think everything is Political and in the process annoy everyone, including those who they are pandering to and out of touch Chicanos.
>>156139983She's off to a bad start from a professionalism standpoint and should just focus on making her little sailor moon cartoon.
>>156140191It's known for being a gay-friendly place with rent so high you STILL have to live in a closet.
>>156140228I doubt kids, or at least boys, actually care. I wanted to be Optimus Prime as a kid.
>>156140171fairly oddparentsben 10jimmy neutronchalkzonefoster's home for imaginary friendsgravity fallssouth park (if you consider cartman the main character)there's probably a bunch of them in canada too
>>156140244I'm talking about really young kids. Not what a 10 year old lol.
>>156140171Ben 10Foster's Home Fairly Odd Parents
>>156140255Optimus is a good example of a good role model though. He's a nice guy who treats his followers with respect. But he's also a cool truck robot who kicks ass.
Not really, no, I'm black and these days I mostly just watch anime since I care less about how "representative" a show is and more about if I like the characters/setting/style in general.I've found that all the people who constantly talk about representation tend to tell extremely boring, uninteresting stories.
>>156139983That is a pretty important detail at the end, it also means people don't have to sit through filler trash to get to "the good shows" at primetime anymore. Most canadian filler wouldn't survive today.
>>156139983Representation does matter and I know how it feels to see someone from your culture on screen for once. How? Well, by seeing actual Australians without foreign writers fucking them up. If I can feel that way as a white bloke from one of the world's most affluent countries, I can't imagine how good it must feel for the less-advantaged.
>>156140312Desu if you weren't so advantaged you'd have bigger problems to care about.
>>156140164>I loved Jake Long, Xiaolin Showdown, Mulan, and Jackie Chan Adventures as a kid but it didn't really occur to me that I liked those shows because they starred Chinese charactersEveryone liked those shows man. Its not like it was only asians that enjoyed them.
>>156139983Wait, i know what the issue is. Their problem is they think those shows with the white boys are shows about being white, cuz they want to make shows about being some minority stereotype, however, there's no such thing as being white in those terms. America doesn't have a white culture because white people aren't a collective like how they see non whites. Its a racial pendulum with these people.
>>156140312Micheal cussack told me everything i needed to know about Australia
I am always told I am privileged but I cannot think of any shows featuring a suburban white male who does not live in either of the coasts since Jimmy NeutronMaybe Clarence but that show feels more "lower income white families where at least one member will OD on cheap fentanyl"
>>156140329>Everyone liked those shows man. Its not like it was only asians that enjoyed them. That's what I meantMy enjoyment wasn't tied to my raceWas there a neat familiarity bonus?Yeah sure but I also liked shows that starred white guys and Static Shock
>>156139983It's nice to have, but I don't lose sleep over it.
>>156139983It matters when you're specifically pulling from different cultures, like if you were trying to make a cartoon about voodoo or the backside of London and you wanted to be at least a bit convincingly authentic
