Does anybody care enough about clayface to see an entire movie dedicated to him and without batman
So far every cretic I watch on YouTube seems to like it. Maybe this is what they should do? Small stories that have nothing to do with a cinematic universe.
>>156131655Apparently
>>156131616It's the best movie of this particular universe so far... If you ignore the retarded things James Gunn claims about overlapping stories with the Snyder-verse and only take into account the stuff actually made for this universe... And even then it still doesn't mean much because that's just two other movies that make really bizarre decisions like "What if Superman was sent to be a god-emperor with a harem and breed a shitload of human-kryptonian hybrid babies?", fucking weird. And there is a bunch of questionable shit in this one too.Look, just watch the Feat of Clay two-parter from the 90's animated series. It's what this movie is clearly trying to imitate, what with making the same combination of Hagen and Karlo with the same basic motives, but the cartoon told the origin of this Hagen-Karlo amalgam character way better and the animation there was cool as fuck.
>>156131716>Maybe this is what they should do? Small stories that have nothing to do with a cinematic universe.DC usually excels at those>>156131770Would you believe that the original script was probably even closer to Feat of Clay?
>>156131812>Would you believe that the original script was probably even closer to Feat of Clay? You mean, would I believe the movie was going to be basically identical to those episodes aside from a few elements like him sleeping with a mob wife and maybe Batman removed from the story?Yeah, I do. This movie basically has more in common with Feat of Clay than it does any other Clayface story outside of BTAS. The combination of Karlo and Hagen, the disfigured face, the experimental cure that ends with an overdose, the use of shapeshifting to get away with crime, the steady loss of control and the faked death over electrocution are all elements taken directly from Feat of Clay as opposed to any older story featuring Clayface. Even the love interest doctor is similar to one of the sequel episodes. Maybe some of these elements were implemented into comics later on but it's undeniable that so much of this movie is just a remake of those episodes. If they didn't directly take inspiration from the cartoon, it would be strange to combine Hagen and Karlo like it did because most other adaptations just go with Karlo if they want the actor backstory. Hagen is basically just the origin for the more interesting powers but Hagen himself has mostly been depicted as a random criminal and is often ignored in favor of Karlo, who has largely taken those powers for himself.
>>156132042The reason for its similarities and why the movie was even made to begin with was because Mike Flanagan was a huge fan of the episode. Had he been able to direct the movie it probably would've been closer to Feat of Clay with a stronger focus on Clayface's mental state.>If they didn't directly take inspiration from the cartoon, it would be strange to combine Hagen and Karlo like it didI wish they went with Karlo as his name. It fits better
I enjoyed this movie, it goes hard on the body horror and the story, acting and pacing are all decent.I was only reminded of him being a batman related character at the very end of the film due to taking on the icon form. The movie is just shape shifting man learning about his powers and taking revenge.
Joker: dangerous incel propagandaClayface: the story of a tragic figure.
>>156131616The club scene was amazing
>>156131616I really like it, better than whalefall but inferior to street fighter 2026.Best comicbook film of the year.
Ask this question next month when this movie hits streaming. As for now, I have no interest in watching it.
>>156131616>What's the /co/nsensus?Bring Snyder back.
>>156131616It's good, but also a very basic way to tell this story. Like if you asked a random joe to write a script based on the premise, they'd give you exactly this as the best they could do. The biggest problem is the character itself gains so much and loses it all so fast that we never get to see much of who he really is before the accident. I think this was to make him so flexible that they can take him anywhere they want to in the future of the DCEU. Nothing about this movie locks the character into being or doing anything, so they can have him do the most horrific thing imaginable or be more sympathetic if they ever do another Suicide Squad with him in it.Though I don't exactly buy that it's the same guy who was sexually assaulting students in college, talking about how hot lesbians are, and playing Mortal Kombat that we saw in Creature Commandos. But as I mentioned, his lack of actual personality makes him moldable to any role they want. Which I guess it's kinda the point with a character named CLAYFACE, he changes to whatever he needs at any time, but he's also someone with a set personality in some of the takes we've seen of him.
>>156134060Clayface in Creature Commandos is a totally different character with a total different vibe from Clayface from this movie, and it is stupid for James Gunn to imply they're the same character and make this flimsy as fuck tie.
It's a good movie that works as a Bat-character adaptation and its own thing if you're not familiar with the material. It's a proto-origin, plenty of runway to explore Clayface actually debuting in Gotham and fighting Batman. It's basically what people wanted out of Joker, but that failed.
>>156131616It alright. Not groundbreaking. But, it alright.
>>156131616Decent movie, especially the poetic Szabo revenge
>>156134060I think we get enough of Hagen's character to understand how he's a bad person. >Has a big head, was warned about Zabos girl yet fucked her anyway>Has ZERO identity of his own outside of his career. He has no other drive, purpose, or even personality outside of acting. >Slips into murder really easily. First was an accident, but he didn't feel bad. Following murders got way easier.>Tried to steal a married mans girl, and killed him to take his place>>156134646Creature Commandos doesn't really have a character. He's just doing villain shit and paid for a service. Hagen's only going to get worse from the ending we saw from his movie
>>156131655Me.
xD
>>156134060I think the point was that even Matt Hagen was an act and that he either didn't have a real personality or that the vengeful side of him is the real Hagen
>>156135395He was all fake
>>156135395That's fair, and it can work for this movie. But I also think that's an excuse not to actually write a character and just have him be whatever the story wants him to be. You can only use that excuse for shapeshifters so much until they are just bland characters compensating for themselves. Mysterio is always mindfucking people and hiding the truth, but he has an actual personality. Clayface, in many iterations, also has a clear personality, either as a very angry, brutish bully or a dramatic "actor" wanting the world to be his stage. This one doesn't have as strong a personality as any of those, just the usual archetype of an insecure murderer who simps for a girl. Like a CSI or Criminal Minds villain of the week rather than someone with a strong character.
>>156136564That's fair. With how heavy on monologues Flanagan is his original script might have had a more dramatic Matt. There are also a bunch of deleted scenes and a deleted subplot about his family which might have expanded on who Matt is
>>156131616>revenge bad>hot white guy bad>white beauty standards bad>genius black women goodThat's it.
>>156136601>bunch of deleted scenes and a deleted subplot about his familyThats definitely where the character is then. I felt like 10-15 minutes of the movie was missing between the cut up and the trial. Its one thing to pay people off to talk shit, but it sounds like people from his neighborhood were almost lining up to talk shit. They probably dropped it cause it would have made the doc love plot fail from word 1
>>156138152They probably also wanted to reshape his character
>>156131616Solid flick but doesn’t do anything for the DCU, which is sort of the goal they’re trying to accomplish. Or at least should be trying to. I think half of Gunn’s chapter 1 slate is cancelled by now.
