I am a very cynical person with high standards and the vast, vast majority of indie pilots i've seen are outright terrible or at least carry enough issues to give me a feeling of mediocrity throughout, so when I watched this I was genuinely and pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed it quite a lot and I am eager to see the rest of the series. The few things that stuck out to me as problems are utterly insignificant compared to what I usually see. That being said I haven't yet sat down and tried to thoroughly critique it, but it passes my initial, instinctual assessment and was a very positive experience beyond that.I don't mean to sound like a normie who claps at flashing lights but all the touches they put into the show like the raw visual quality, shot composition, and little sound effects made it feel like I was watching a movie and that made me feel good. I'm really happy they actually seem to acknowledge how awful being a villain actually can be and aren't just using the concept as set dressing for a quirky OC showcase like Vivzie's work. Pink thing was a joy to watch and that's great because I was hoping she'd have a large presence and be a good character.Unironically mogs anything i've seen from GLITCH so far in my subjective objective personal opinion.

Dave also showed that the entire group doesn't have to succeed, so chipping down the rival team could really provide good build up.Really the animation hard carries it. It's some impressive eye candy to simply look at the whole way through, with expressive characters and some fun action set pieces.A solid watch I would recommend if you got the time to burn, but not something I'd set a schedule to watch. Could potentially see some real improvements depending what they focus on. If episode 2 is more Lord General saying 1st world problems to be evil, The Pink Thing reading a book, and a musical number that lasts three times as long as it needs to, I might just pass on the rest of the series.

I think its got promise but they really gotta punch up the humor here. Thats probably my biggest criticism because unlike most pilots, the story isnt really the main issue and the scene with the Paper King already showed they can do impactful moments, but god the humor can be lazy. Being self-aware about evil bad guy chanting or puns is worse than the actual cliche itself. Also I do think they could've saved the villian song for later as I wish we had more time with the characters themselves, but I guess it establishes the "Big Bad" himself alright. Actually I was surprised that I liked him the most of the cast. Yeah he can be silly but he does show he can be actually evil or cruel

Along with that, there's the same lovebombing praise that never says WHY the pilot is good or interesting, but insists that "the whole industry should strive to be like this." Makes me fucking sick.
