>100 million production>15 million gross so farFucking ouch lmao. Maybe one day they’ll realize that nobody is into stop-motion besides childless aging millennials
>>156115836The problem wasn't the story, the animation, or the style. The problem was the terrible character design—especially when compared to characters from previous films, which look much better.Just look at the image in the OP; the mere sight of it leaves me feeling completely indifferent.
>>156115836I'm gonna watch it tonight with my fiance, will not keep you guys updated.
>>156115836The problem isn’t that nobody’s into stop motion, the problem is that nobody’s into shitty Oscar bait with ugly bland character designs. They hardly even experiment with stop motion, they just try to make it look as 3D as possible rather than trying something unique with it? Why not make a cut-out animation styled stop motion film? Why not make the first cartoony stop motion feature like how Hotel Transylvania was the first cartoony 3D animated feature? Nope, still gotta make it look 3D and pretend as if we haven’t already reached the peak of stop motion.Maybe the nepo baby that stole Will Vintons studio from him should learn a thing or two from how experimental he was.>>156116425You’re fiancé would probably dump you if you forced her to sit through this garbage
>>156115836It just looks depressing.
>>156115836Why are you guys experts on marketing all of a sudden?
>>156116481If it's that bad we'll just get up and leave , I'm not gonna force myself to watch a shitty movie either lol
>>156115836Are you the Sharktalefag?
>>156116484So??
>>156115836It's not for you personally, or money, or profit, or content.Someone was determined enough to tell a story. There was a group effort to make it. To manifest it into a real thing. By any means. And it took some anonymous neckbearded fatass's opinion on 4chan exactly 13 seconds to completely destroy it. Well played sir. Surely the annuls of history shall count you a hero for time immemorial.(Slow clap.) Truly Epic Bait, good sir. Now go an hero and neck yourself whilest beating off to cartoons.
why does commercial success matterthe guy funding these movies can afford flops anyway
Nobody knows about it
>>156115888>>156116481The problem isn't with the film, it's with cinema today. People don't want to go to theaters anymore. They're overpriced for trash food, sticky floors, no heating, beat-up seats, and shitty patrons. Who wants to go out when we all have comfy living rooms we can lounge in our underwear in? Unless the movie is a cultural tentpole like The Avengers or The Minecraft Movie, it's not worth the cost of going out.
it's a modern lord of the rings
>>156115836I just saw it.Visually, it's a masterpiece, but damn the story was a boring mess. >passive, boring protagonist>exposition talk every ten minutes>new characters and places being introduced right before the climax>the coolest character, the eagle lady, get's anticlimatic death and everyone forgets about her>"Save the baby" plotline>characters and places introduced early in the movie are actually completely irrelevant to the story >constant switching in tones, one scene is a brutal battle, the second is a slapstick comedy>uhhhh magic weeds, I guess? I have no clue>the bad guys lose, even thought they're armed with fireamrs and cannons>good guys win, even thought they're literally barbarians with iron tools>main villain is evil and wants to sacrifice babys... because she's sad about her dead kids>classic trope of strong-spirited daughter who has to defy her weak and stupid parents>she ends up being literally side-lined in the final battle because the creators wanted to focus on fighting instead of her - LMAO>background characters have amazing scenes of heroism and bravery, protagonist just walks around and yaps a lot>deus ex machina endingI had low expectations and it was still a let-down.
>>156119618with films like these, the visuals matter much more than anything and I found most of the story beats fun enough. i personally thought they would have done more with the governor since the house could have taken a deal to kill the kid, and they paint him in a darker tone along with the rest of the bureaucracy. i think that was the only thing that really bothered me.
>>156119618>deus ex machina endingthey literally seeded the whole blood and ivy thing multiple times throughout the movie, it is difficult to take your criticisms in good faith when you are this purposefully oblivious.
>>156120311Anon yes it was foreshadowed a lot, but it actually happening was a random event. It's not like anyone in the good guys camp actually knew about it, or worked towards this as a goal.It would be very different if the girl actually knew what was going on, but she had no clue what's happening.
>>156115836This Studio was propped up by USAID, of their own admission btw, and they still released a new movie after shutdown instead of binning it for tax credit. Very stupid. Bankruptcy soon.
>>156122193I thought it was Nike money.
>>156115836Laika always makes 10/10 movies, and they always flop. Every damn time.
>>156122200Both Oregon HQ companies so I would not rule out corporate sponsorship of some kind, but the reason they are all stop motion is because they could claim 'historical art promotion' to get grants.
>>156115836this movie turned me gay. avoid at all costs bros.
>>156122238No the reason they're stop motion is because Travis Knight is the son of Nike's CEO and his dad basically props up the company as his passion project.
It was based on books written by the lead singer of The Decemberists, who has a fascination with fairy tales and the stock characters that inhabit them. So of course Wildwood is full of stock characters, fairy tale magic, and whimsical encounters with no real pay off. This all works fine in a five minute song, but there's a reason you've probably never heard of those books, and a reason no one's recommending this movie very much. It's just not satisfying apart from the visuals, in the same way a Decemberist song isn't satisfying apart from its melody. There really were a few times I was just bored and wanted to leave the theatre. It's just the wrong mix of things. The dialog, fairy tale setting, narrative, and shallow characters make it too juvenile for older viewers. The violence, length, and meandering narrative make it too impenetrable for kids. It's a glorious, beautiful mess that its creators obviously loved making, but they're going to struggle to find people who want to eat this ham and peanut butter pizza they've cooked up.
>>156123993>the same way a Decemberist song isn't satisfying apart from its melodyWell I like them, how about that?
>>156119618so its like every lakia movie where the movie is pretty but the writing and story suck and yes that includes kubo i saw that shit it theaters hearing pepole calling extremely underrated and shit and was dissapointed as fuck
>>156115836I don't think Laika have made a profitable movie since Coraline. The studio lead is the heir to the Nike fortune so they never have an issue getting funding together. Honestly I wish more studios had this kind of set up, it produces great work. It's similar to how classic film studios would put out a passion project just to flex their creativity, which is how we got films like the Wizard Of Oz
>>156115836Just saw this really shitty ad. Making my games with AI has brought innocent joy to my soul that makes me think about doing my children’s video games I was planning when I was younger. Then I see this middle finger? And people expect me to support this studio that fails to resonate with parents, by the way?In b4 some animator anon says this is all my fault because I didn’t hook myself up to an IV drip and consume Laika’s films for 1000 hours, then they would have done a different ad in return for my slavery
>>156124632i forgot to exclude coraline since thats actually a really good movie everything else sucks tho
>>156115836Honestly, what turned away my interest was that it was another Laika fantasy movie. Not that there is anything wrong with them, but I would like to see them tackle something more "grounded".
>>156116481Most young animators these days don't want to make films they consider infantile and childish
>>156115888you are a faggot
>>156124647The rupees you would have spent to see it don't matter
>>156124647kill yourself guy
>>156125056I’m glad you feel owned by thisJust to rub it in: parents aren’t complaining about this film just because it’s pg-13, it’s mainly because they don’t give a damn about the Laika brand. Otherwise they would find the difference more meaningful and realize.
>>156115888>The problem wasn't the story, the animation, or the styleThe problem was the story, Laika adapted a 500+ page book into a 2 hour movie when that not enough time to tell the story. Laika decided turn the first book of a series into a movie knowing full well they don't sequels so we're missing out on majority of the plot and characters. They adapted a book with two main characters spent majority of the ads/movie time on Prue and reduce Curtis to comic relief and cut his scenes from the book. > The problem was the terrible character designThe characters is an another problem. The books had illustrations done by Carson Ellis and art style is cute-like, Prue has a bob haircut with rosy cheek yet the movie decided to give her baggy eyes and wrinkles. This guy gets it >>156116481 Laika could have experiment by following the book art direction but we're stuck with these sad looking characters. In the previous Wildwood thread they're bookfags who were disappointed in this movie and think it would have work better as a tv series. Now, I'm starting to think it would have been better if Colin Meloy gave the rights to his book to Aardman instead of Laika, cause at least they wouldn't mess up with advertisement and could easily replicated Carson art style.
>>156124647you're cuck coding videogames? pathetic
>>156125152>gay leftist babbles Stay in line hoping your glitch or industry job becomes real bro, while my dreams are coming true RIGHT NOW, and I don’t need to become a gay mindslave to live them.
>>156125103>ownedyou don't have kids you useless retard
>>156125223you aren't doing shit retard, the IA is doing everything
>>156125254>>156125271>tantrumingLelI can smell the sunk cost fallacy. You didn’t HAVE to do the bidding of dumb assholes who make ads like this >>156124647, but you did anyway, and now there’s no point
>>156125223>gayyou are a namefag on /co/ bragging about cuck coding what is probably another goonerslop gatcha, you are the gayest sausage sucker here
>>156125293Guy you can't make art because to do that you would need a soul, everything you do is utter garbage, that's why you are a so proud of having some IA doing the whole job, including the creative process. You are a cuck with no creative spark.
>>156125341That's hurtful but I don't feel bad for guy since he is an insufferable cunt
Bring back bullying namefags till they an hero and leave
>>156125493Guy is too egotistical to do an hero
They should just make Coraline 2 at this point
>>156115836Why does that young girl look like she's 35 years old?
>>156125601They'd need to get clearance from Neil Gaiman, it would look bad.
>>156125520sad but true
>>156125601HELL NO
>>156115836Many such cases
First few seconds there is a naked boy that dies
>>156125690Because you've never gone outside and seen real people
>>156127579I suppose I'd rather not go wherever you're seeing teenage girls with deeply sunken in eyes and receding hairlines
>>156115836Sometimes people make art for the sake of art (and their dad is rich) not everything is about making money. Imagine if you could only enjoy things that were profitable? wtf.
>>156124647Why didn't they just pay the Dude With Sign to do this instead of ripping him off?
>>156116499Because ive seen more than a decade of flopping media that all does the.same shitWere in the worst depression in american history nobody is wasting money on dumb bullshit just because producers/devs wasted a hundred million on it
>>156115836That's what they get for making like 70 percent of the movie CG. Most of the scenes are just moving a puppet around a green screen and animating scenery and other characters around them in post. It's super fucking gay. This whole scene is just Prue and Mac puppets rolling through a green screen but everyone is marveling at it like it's the most amazing thing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVNsYI4zuH0
>>156115888Eye bag autists continuing to sperg out is so annoying. The designs look fine.
The movie is really good and people who think popularity = quality should be killed.
>>156129474Where's the proof that any of that is CG? Do you just refuse to believe that the movie could have that level of detail? It took 16 years to make.
>>156129612Knowledge of their techniques from behind the scenes of previous movies, behind the scenes footage from this movie, recognizing CG models looking different from puppets and props, etc etc. Look at how different the guitarist (Colin's) textures and movements are from prue and mac dancing next to him. The way the hat sits on his head, the way his feet are not quite present on the floor, the difference between the way light reacts to the CG and physical characters' skin, the way there is no "boiling" in any of the guitarist's small secondary movements like there is with prue and mac. You get a feel for it and then you're able to see it better. They put some effort into making the CG elements blend in but it's not perfect. And they didn't spend 16 years filming, it was 4-5 years of actual production. Travis read the book 16 years ago and started envisioning it but that's all. They claim they did everything in camera that they could, but they really didn't. They didn't make any puppets for shots that would only be a few seconds long to keep the budget from being ridiculous. Think about it from the standpoint of a director who has to keep within a budget but still make every shot look exactly how he wants.
>>156129267>Sometimes people make art for the sake of art (and their dad is rich) not everything is about making money.bullshit, if that were true, they would’ve released the movie for free on YouTube.
>>156124647Took me like 30 seconds to understand that cringe sign the black lady was holding
>>156123993I fully agree. The plot having no single direction, combined with random encounters and characters popping in and out, made this movie really a slog.Entire time I was watching it, I was thinking "this should've been a book, or a short TV series"I still don't understand what was the point of the two villain dudes who tried to imprison the heroine at the start. They dissapeared from the story and then showed up in the prologue without doing anything.
>>156129932Bullshit yourself1. They want it to be seen on a big screen without compression artifacts and needed a distributor on board for that2. They can be ok with losing money while not wanting to lose more money than necessary
>>156131493nta but the movie looked amazing on the big screen, 100% worth the tickettoo bad it was dubbed, and the audio levels were utterly FUBAR
>>156115836I plan to see it next week, help how I can. I think the release date wasn't good. Personally I've been really busy with Halloween stuff, no time.
>>156115836>WildmemeWhat, Wildwoke wasn't good enough for a joke?
