The thing that changed Kass looked like a piece of trash/scrap.

Vizlet easily could have given Viracroix one or more antiquities of immense value by mistake because the Great Society didn't tell the other enclaves what they were looking for, hence why everything needed to be sent to them.

    ah, i see.

i just cant take yinglet seriously about anything so "hard yinglet theocracy" didnt appear to me.
    >>
    >>156121141
The yinglet elders either have knowledge or traditions about the antiquities that we the readers don't, or else like Viracroix they just know they have potentially game-changing powers. We know at least one seemingly worthless item was effectively magic. They therefore made it a priority to find them and bring them to the central enclaves. Because a typical enclave would leak intel like a sieve, they naturally don't tell the regular matriarchs and scavengers why they're doing it or what they're looking for, but they made it such an important enough duty to send all artefacts to the heartland that Viz's predecessor emphasised it to her from her death bed.

Vizlet, from ignorance or arrogance, traded potentially priceless objects away to a foreign power without telling the central enclaves what she was doing, in direct disobedience of their instructions. When they discovered this they took away her scavenging authority and assigned someone trustworthy to take it over and to keep an eye on her. Perfectly reasonable as far as that goes. The additional punishments were presumably for defying the social order.

I don't usually post in these thread but one thing that I remember taking me out of this was how I always thought this specifically was a terribly written interaction.
Whoever writes this comic (I forget the name) is trying to give the idea that the trademaster is a ruthless mastermind that rules the town with an iron fist and has eyes and ears everywhere, and then he just killed the dude.
This is how people who haven't seen gestapo politics think these things are handled. It's naive at best and outright stupid at worst, because he's trying to make the man look like a vetinari-esque character and his solution is "lol, just put a blanket on him to kill him mid-speech to show he's business"

If anything, this made me undermine viracroix because now I know the dude just doesn't know how to write someone that would actually be able to scheme anything to get out of a wet paper bag, but that's the writer's fault more than the character. It's a shame.
    >>
    >>156127254
He's clearly a delusional lefties and the only thing keeping the comic interesting is that he's also autistic enough to follow the premises through to their conclusions.
    >>
    >>156127254
Still more competent than what we currently have.
    >>
    >>156127385
It's a technically subtle (compared to his other works) fetish comic that's churning in the back that doesn't require me to put any particular interest or effort in that hasn't really gotten bad that might be interesting down the line with. That's still an achievement by webcomics standards. And some of the lore is fairly interesting.
I'm mostly farming it for reaction images but it's a fairly enjoyable read.
    >>
    >>156127254
That seems like a misread of the Trademaster to me. He's ruthless, certainly, but he's also highly curious and values the freedom of the people of his city. My impression of this scene is that he's not kidnapping this guy in a particularly clandestine manner. He's got him tied up in a basement because he wants to question him. Maybe the guy was threatened or coerced, indicating a bigger problem than simple greed on the part of one person. If the guy wasn't actually at fault, its possible that normal 'due process' (if that even exists in Val Salia) would be compromised, thus grabbing the guy out of the blue is a more effective strategy to prevent intervention by other parties. Once the guy fully shows his hand though, Viracroix just has him killed because there is no further value in the interaction. He's cheeky about it, but that's totally consistent with the trademaster's personality in other interactions we've seen. Maybe a public execution would've been more effective to get the point across, but it probably doesn't matter to other politicians. He's committed a crime worth of the death penalty, thus the penalty is handed out and Viracroix gets on with the rest of his day.
    >>

    >That seems like a misread of the Trademaster to me
No, blud just genuinely wrote him like shit. But that's fine, I've got other webcomics for political intrigue and not everyone can write super serious characters with complex motives and backstories for their fetish comic.

as much as Vizlet wants to remain a part of the wider Yinglet civilization, I do suspect eventually she and the Val Salia Enclave are going to have to break free of the Elders control if they're to have any real chance of achieving her goals, obviously this will stir up a lot of shit though
    >>
    >>156127507
You are saying that he's something that he demonstrably isn't. That's not bad writing, that's bad reading on your part. I'm not saying he's the peak of political intrigue or anything, but his character and actions are internally consistent with the world as presented.

The guy traded away the life's blood of the city, without permission, and has just shown a willingness to go full Kodos on the populace. Reasonable discussion is at an end. Your read of this as the trademaster being a tyrannical despot is...interesting, to say the least.
    >>
    >>156127254
I'm not quite sure what the complaint is - is it that he's a badly written character or that he's bad at politics? There's a case for either, but the comparison to the gestapo is throwing me off since he's clearly based on Lorenzo the Magnificent not Heinrich Himmler and since the gestapo were shit at politics.
    >>
    >>156127668
Gonna need to fight to declare independent. Yinglets by themselves couldn't beat val salia if they ally with the enclave I don't think, but the question is what other allies the central enclaves have, what antiquities that might shift the balance?
    >>
    >>156127254
Making people quietly dissappear is literally the number one way leaders become feared.
    >>
    >>156128310
    >Yinglets by themselves couldn't beat val salia if they ally with the enclave
What makes it in Val Salia's interests to fight? It sounds like a choice between endless guerilla rat-raids vs. leading armies into the poison swamp to try to wipe out a species notoriously good at running away, on behalf of an out-of-power isolated exile enclave of primitive tribals.
    >>
    >>156128396
He's clearly trying to be venerated not feared.

    >>156127839
He traded away some of the strategic reserves, a small portion of an excessive surplus. His reasoning was sound, even if his methods were illegitimate. This is maybe grounds for demotion, termination or some kind of civil reprimand, not being kidnapped and executed in a dungeon. Viracroix is the unreasonable one here.
    >>
    >>156115795

    >>
    >>156128423
    >This is maybe grounds for demotion, termination or some kind of civil reprimand
In a modern democracy, embezzling from the government gets you sent to prison.
    >>
    >>156127839
Viracroix is a tyrannical despot, but any good despot knows that you can't get by on tyranny alone, you need to remain popular with the masses. And if it takes lopping a few heads off to ensure that nothing threatens that popularity, well, that's just part of the job.
    >>
    >>156128423
What these people don't understand is that I was objecting both to the method of termination (theatrical for the sake of theatrics in a literal dungeon with the only audience being the man who is going to die, which makes it ridiculous) and the termination itself, yes.
It's just silly, but it's the understandable level of silly that someone who doesn't exactly know how to write a character like this would fall into.
    >>
    >>156128490

    >>
    >>156128406
I imagine Vizlet making public the Elder's pursuit of antiquities would be sufficient Casus Belli for a hypothetical conflict against the Elders, after all I imagine the various powers that be among human civilization already distrust each other acquiring them, now think how they'd all react to finding out the Scavs are secretly hoarding the things
    >>
    >>156128551
We don't know the wider political landscape of the region other than Kass homeland was involved in a war. There is no reason to thin there are hostile neighbour's chomping at the bit to conquer the city.
    >>
    >>156128423
    >He traded away some of the strategic reserves, a small portion of an excessive surplus. His reasoning was sound, even if his methods were illegitimate.
I think you are missing the important point, there.

And the important point is: the very reason it's been a very long time that the city hasn't been besieged IS because that reserve exist. Word would go out that the reserve has been diminished and some neighbour powers who initially thought a siege wouldn't be worth it might suddenly be inclined to a different opinion.

All there was to figure for Lacroix was if that guy was either a traitor who did it precisely with that intent, or if it was solely for money. And once he figured he was just stupid-greedy the Trademaster concluded the guy was just too stupid to understand that simple concept and thus there was no point in debating with him any longer.
    >>
    >>156128423
    >>156128494
    You guys seem very confused
    >>
    >>156128551
if every reasonable, minor infraction is dealt with death in a dungeon instead of public shaming then we have to agree that the trademaster is, as a matter of fact, both genuinely stupid and not thinking ahead. Which is what the author is trying to hammer into the narrative.
I cannot stress enough how this is just monumentally stupid from a common sense level. You're actively fighting what you're preaching.
    >>
    >>156128581
    >We don't know the wider political landscape
We know the city has been besieged before. And the Trademaster most likely know it. Omarhan probably should to, but chose to ignore it for a quick profit.

Again, you seem to miss the essential point: There hasn't been a siege for so long PRECISELY because of that strategic reserve.

Its existence is a deterrent in itself
    >>
    >>156128617
It's a completely recoverable, temporary and incredibly minor. He is not even embezzling. Abd they both know it. The only reason the trademaster is angry is because he supposedly knows something the common trader does not know.

You know what happens if you make someone "disappear" when it does something like this?
    It happens again.
Because that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do and you're not telephoning the fact to everyone else in the community that might do that.
Nevermind the fact you're removing a semi-important merchant in a trading town out on a whim.

It's notable but not surprising. One of the reasons Francoism is often distinguished from fascism is the lack of an obsession with war, which meant it didn't violently destroy itself, which in turn gave it the benefit of decades of entrenched propaganda a la communist dictatorships, and since it dissolved bloodlessly there were no ideological purge either.

From the beginning that burial location was contested because it was only meant for those who died during the civil war (which he didn't).

As stated, there's a good reason for the surplus and the mook trying to justify his actions in itself isn't helping his case, much less the trend of that line of thought. Viracroix essentially nipped a war profiteer or worse in the bud. One could make comparisons with similar cases from ancient Egypt though these generally handled above board.but where state resources were concerned, it was anything but trivial.

Granted I would Have to go back through the earlier parts of OOPS for more context. on V's behaviour but he seems at a glance to have a better grasp of how the small cogs run the machine than his subordinates..

ngl you are missing me here

this is a semi hard fi comic where the main point of engagement is speculation on biology and hints of worldbuilding. people just like to theorycraft when they are not too busy furgooning.
Given the nature of the setting, all kinds of possibilities are open.
The attitude you are expecting simply isn't there. Nobody has any pretense for what this comic is besides "that skyrim TF comic guy's slightly more serious project"

As for the Viracroix scene, I think people are misunderstanding a simple execution played for laughs with a scheme. Hard fi as it is, OOPs will always be comedy first, story second.

Stealing and selling the "OH SHIT WE'RE UNDER SIEGE!" food is not a minor infraction, bud. It's major. It's severe.
