What do people mean when they say these aren't indie?
>>156106900A seething fagtuber
>>156106900Monkey wrench isn't india, it's boring.
>>156106900indie used to be shit like made in your garage with a few friends so it's normal that people find the term jarring nowadaysthese are indie studios like a subsidiary of Disney would be an indie animation studio.it's like kickstarter becoming a platform for viral buzz marketing rather than something where you actually get the funds, cause they have a goal of 50k dollars but it takes 2 million to make the thing. a whole lot of everything small budget is still in the hands of the mega rich and the veil is starting to come off
>>156106900When does a company stop being indie?
it's been nearly a century. indie doesn't exist anymore, that's the thing. just like the boomer concept of getting a job and enjoying security for the rest of your life and buying a house on one paycheck isn't a thing anymore except for a few select people. everything is corporate
>>156106980Cope
>>156107009Yeah, people should make things like this again. Just don’t let him turn into a corporate icon of pure evil this time.
>>156107082Keep crying
>>156107114Not crying.
>>156107131Yes you are
>>156106980How many shows were made in garages
>>156107197probably a lot of anime
>>156106900I see of this as with games. There's indie, there's AAA, and there's that AA middle ground which these fit into. They're not a big name publisher worth billions but they're not some guy working in his mother's basement on something.
>>156106900Spindelhorse works with Amazon. And Glitch gets Australia's HR government handouts.MW and Lackadaisy do count as fully indie from what I know.
>>156107575MW did a Faustian Bargain with Netflix, its not fucking indie if if Zeural is too much of a stubborn retard to hire writers.
>>156106900Because these are not Terrible Mouse
>>156109417I don't watch this shit cause i'm not a pedophile
>>156109417>more views than monkey wrench
>>156107009When it's not funded by a single source. "Indie" is short for independent. Consider Star Wars, the original '77 film was not independent because it was funded by 20th Century Fox, but from Empire through to Revenge of the Sith, those were all independent films because they were funded entirely by George Lucas.Hazbin Hotel is now funded by Amazon, and Digital Circus is funded by Glitch Productions who are pretty sizeable, although it could be argued that it's still technically independent. Lackadaisy is funded by Iron Circus Comics. The only one that seems to actually be Indie, is Monkey Wrench.
>>156109453You are already a pedophile if you watch:>Glitch>ViviziepopAnd pretty much anything animated that is popular among leftists
>>156109417the mogeko castle of the modern age
>>156109526>Digital Circus is funded by Glitch Productions who are pretty sizeable, although it could be argued that it's still technically independentThis is something that's been bugging me. How did glitch managed to get a movie on theaters worldwide even for a limited time. I'm probably over estimating how much money you need or under estimating the cash cow that TADC is, but if memory serves me right, it was the first time anything from youtube made a movie to this scale, not even avgn or Smosh made something like this.
>>156109772>moneycould just be connections really , hell it could just be a person that had the right connections really liked TADC and just made it happen
>>156109772Glitch has signed deals with Netflix and Amazon, so depending on how money is flowing with those deals it could a pretty sizeable chunk of change. Also Glitch is listed as a private company, but that doesn't mean there aren't investors.
>>156109885Actually when did they label themselves as a private company?
>>156106900retardadly huge budget industry plantstrue indie is like a guy animating a few shorts himself and uploading them to youtube
>>156106900indie is supposed to mean independent, which usually means small, not part of big corperation.Monkey wrench, still kinda indie i'd say.Tadc, was indie, then got so popular it became a movie, and if it dies forever now, I guess you could argue. But it's kinda half and half?Lets be honest, you really think it's dead?Hazbin, 2 seasons, with several more, broadway, NOT indie.lackadaisy, was indie, still is, until the new eps come out and get popular. To be fair could say half and half, but i'd argue indie for (until new eps) So yeah, most of those are, or were indie. Hazbin I'd say Definitely isn't even close. Unless you go back to when only first couple eps were out, before it got the ball rolling.Tadc is kinda hard to say, cause it's too popular now, or was at end. But it's "over forever" now.So as long as thats the case, you could make argument?
>>156106900They mean they're illiterate and don't know what the word indie actually means.
>>156109526Lackadaisy is funded by iron circus comics, true.October 2025, Glitch Productions is now co-producing the series. Also true. Now here's the thing. Glitch sorta co-produces some things while it takes more of others. So you could say it's half indie. But keep in mind, the only thing thats as close to glitch right now is either,Cartoon network, spindlehorse/vizziepop, or some other semi major brand. They aren't as big as disney (nothing is), but they are not small, still big. >>156109885Maybe you could argue glitch is not huge (still big), cause they just partner with huge corporations. But how much difference is there?
>>156106900I guess because they now have money and contacts
>>156110234>But how much difference is there? It really comes down to semantics more than anything else. Indie labels usually get used because the work is from a single creator who writes and directs everything, so even if they're backed by millions of dollars, so long as the work isn't being done by a committee it could still be considered "indie", but really what they mean is "auteur" but because the auteur label gets thrown around as a quasi-insult in the industry, nobody wants to use that label.
>>156106900Connotation vs denotation, that's where the semantics are clashing. Denotatively, indie means independent from being a part of a major studio. Connotatively, indie is synonymous for being made by a rag tag team of amateurs producing amateur level work for scraps of attention. The characters of pic rel are denotatively indie (except Hazbin, you don't get to call yourself indie if your title card says "Amazon studios presents") but connotatively, the dissonance is that these are independent productions but with ties to corporations with more money than they have. Glitch is a small company compared to Amazon. A big fish in the indie pond, a tiny fish in the Hollywood ocean. It feels wrong to technically call them indie when you know they have deals with Netflix, etc. No one is wrong for feeling off by it, but that's where the discomfort lies
>>156110431>It feels wrong to technically call them indie when you know they have deals with Netflix, netflix is a distributor thats like saying indie films stop being indie when they are released in cinemas
>>156106900It's pretty simple. "Indie" is seen as a positive, so anything perceived negatively is "not indie" for a variety of given reasons that don't necessarily make sense or form an objective standard. It's functionally the /co/ version of "industry plant;" a term used to give the appearance of moral weight for what essentially boils down to "I don't like thing."
>>156110431I think funding is the correct approach for this as anon said here >>156109526 It's better to stick as close as possible to the actual name, to the concept of being independent.Indie shouldn't mean amateur. An indie studio could employ both greenhorns and old pros.Indie shouldn't be based on number of employees or general size, even though it's pretty tempting to just go with this one since it sounds correct. Indie can be a single creator or a group of varying size, without a real hard cap for how many. You could have an indie studio that is decently large or even huge, and composed of industry veterans if you want. What makes a studio independent is the fact that they create and fund their own projects based on their own vision, rather than sell their souls to a corporate overlord who may or may not grant them creative freedom, but ultimately will have a say on what the final product looks like. You might argue that this definition makes industry giants like Disney or Dreamworks technically qualify as indie, but to that I respond that any company that goes public automatically stops being independent, and it's evident why. You're just cutting out the middleman and going straight for the people with the deep pockets.
>>156110696Exactly. Laika is an independent studio.
>>156106900Perhaps what people really mean is "auteur."Don Hertzfeldt and Bill Plympton come to mind. They either self-finance, or are able to find financing by themselves, so they are not beholden to anyone else's commercial interests. The moment you have to make a deal with another company, even a small one, you will relinquish some measure of creative control. At least, that's the assumption.>>156107050>indie doesn't exist anymoreI would consider something like Space King to be a true indie. Regardless of content or how they are funding it, those guys haven't shaken anyone else's hand. They steadfastly refuse to make a deal with anyone.
