I think one of the most blatant examples is when support for Israel was clearly controversial among lower level Democrats and the leadership just decided, on stage, to make support for Israel a major stance of the party despite very loud booing at the idea. Similarly, Republicans really love evangelicalism and what evangelicals stand for to the point where they have gone out of their way to appease them, even though evangelicals are a minority not just in general but within American Christianity itself and are considered total freaks by most, so they logically shouldn't matter much.They only way they ever care about anything really is when the public opinion is nearly unanimous and they simply can't ignore it, at which point they will only change their stance on that particular topic.So if Mutants are largely unpopular, those two parties will just not give a single fuck and focus on other shit. If controversial, they will spin whichever side of the issue in their favor. And if mutant rights are something everyone wants, they will both yield. Neither of them are really inclined towards any particular side of a controversial topic, they just go with whatever the other party doesn't. It's a real shitshow.
