Are you an inspiring indie creator/writer that wants to avoid the therapy speak that everyone seems to hate now? Well, look no further than here. I made a writing rubric to avoid "therapy speak" that everyone seems to hate in modern media now.I would also like to say, that for the writing advice I'm going to give: Do not look at these as an objective rubric or write your scene around this rubric. Write in the way you want to first, and then look at any of these things and consider if adding any of these things would improve the emotional talking scene.
For example: One thing you immediately notice in many of these scenes are that one person will completely dominate the conversation and effectively infantlize the person that's receiving the talk. This happens in Kinger's scene with Pomni. >Pomni breaks down to the point where she can't even say anything back, forcing Kinger to come in and give her the exact right kind of talk that she needs with the exact right message. This is forced and messy. It makes Kinger come across as a completely perfect therapist that magically fixes all of Pomni and the rest of the cast's problems without showing any kind of insecurity or any problems of his own. Just like Pomni, he becomes a comfort blanket for the characters.
Gobbles' scene with Kit highlights much of the same issues. Kit is portrayed as helpless to her emotions to the point where it stretches the suspension of disbelief regarding her heroic efforts.Kit is given no opportunity to talk. She has essentially zero lines of dialogue that even slightly push back or contribute to what Gobbles is saying to her. She's not even given a chance to agree.Gobbles comes in and acts, becoming competent super fast to the point of absurdity and giving her exactly what she needs to hear in the given moment. It even includes an especially stupid line that defies what Gobbles even knows about Kit:>Nothing you ever did was your fault!Aside from the pilot making Kit job and look incompetent constantly, it also makes her job to her own emotions.
So how does that make you feel?
What do you do about this? I'll call the person comforting the character the "giver" and the person receiving the advice as the "receiver".1. If the receiver is having an emotional breakdown, have the giver stand back and let the emotions play out first. The crying, the screaming, the panicking, as it might help the pacing and make sure the audience feels the emotions with the character instead of it being immediately interrupted.2. Make it so that the giver is acknowledged either through meta-text or through their own personality, behavior or just outright saying it that they're imperfect and don't know all of the correct advice to give, or know entirely what the receiver is going through.3. If the scene is one of one character trying to comfort another, have the giver acknowledge the receiver's positive traits/actions instead of just jumping straight to giving them the perfect advice.4. Allow the giver to demonstrate their own vulnerability. Either bringing it up, or meta textually acknowledging them or even the receiver mentioning it.5. If the receiver is unwilling to open up about their problems, the giver could get them to open up about it naturally, through conversation, probing, even pushing them. Unless they're super psychologically manipulative, the giver should make these topics appear through natural means.6. Make the receiver open up at their own pace or even able to decline talking all together.7. Make it a genuine conversation between two characters. Too often these kinds of scenes involve one person dominating the entire conversation and effectively infantlizing the person receiving the talk. Hence the Gameoverse criticism.8. Allow humor, teasing and even disagreement between the giver and receiver. Especially if the receiver disagree with the giver, this gives the receiver more agency.9. End it off with substantial emotional development either positive or negative instead of it being an instant fix.

Write it in the way that you want to write it first and then, look at these as more of suggestions. Only do these things if it makes sense for the characters/scenes. But also don't use that as an excuse to never even consider any of these things in the first place.

I'd be dead if you didn't save me.">Kit looks up >Gobbles begins to tear up>"I-I can't thank you enough for that...">Kit begins to cry as well, reaching out to hug him. Both of them sitting there breathing for a moment>"I don't want to lose anyone else.">Kit begins to giggle, pulling away for a second>"That's supposed to be my line...">Suddenly Gobbles looks down and remembers the map>"Flappers gave us the name of his arch nemesis, Snappers. He has minibosses!">Kit's eyes widen. "If we could figure out where each of them are...">"Yeah! We could stop it in time!" Gobbles looks excited. >Gobbles extends his hand and Kit accepts it. >"Let's go save this world together!"

First, you have to define what therapyspeak is irl.It's a manipulation tactic designed to make one person in an argument seem more like they're arguing from an area of authority, as if their own side is impartial reality, using words that should only be used upon a careful, clinical examination of a situation.In /co/, therapy speak is similar. In using the show as a therapy session; the writer is both patient and therapist. Thus, the best way to realize this is noticing just how every character turns into this weird sanded down reasonable version of themselves long enough for the big speech to happen.Sometimes you can work it in naturally by having a character just breakdown to the point of partial shutdown or loss for words, but you'll notice because the other character just turns completely fucking zen.Either way, the solution is not assuming you're smarter than the audience, so you don't write scenes designed to spell out how you demand they feel about your characters and their situation
