It's one of the greatest cartoon series of all time, yet it feels like it has next to no reach. Is it the episode count? The premise? The channel it aired on?
>>156082721>Is it the episode count? The premise? The channel it aired on?no. it was created with love for the medium and genres.
>>156082721It's hard to jump into the series from a random episode. If you happen to catch an episode from, say, season 3 onward you'll have no idea what's going on.
>>156082853one of the first episodes i saw was when phantom limb was "worshiping a toaster and a shoe" and it really was like being dropped in a minefield
It's impossible for something truly great to ever be mainstream, and I wouldn't want it to be. Have you seen the way people talk about things that are mainstream popular?
>>156082866>worshipping a shoeOh that wasn't all he was doing to that thing
>>156082721I'd say it's the issue that it was specifically made for an audience who grew up watching old-timey adventure cartoons. As time passes, that audience gets smaller and smaller, and especially the subgroup of that which enjoys crude humor was already rather miniscule to begin with.Hell, I'm 27, and I'm the youngest person I ever met who liked VB, and I grew up watching Johnny Quest DVDs with my literal boomer Dad.
>>156082721I heard recently the show was a flop and only got seasons because the channel boss liked it
>>156083680>I'd say it's the issue that it was specifically made for an audience who grew up watching old-timey adventure cartoons. Not at all. Sure you will miss quite a few references, but that's not the main souce of humor. The general premise of superheroes and villains is immediately understood by just about anyone, and the bulk of the humor comes from making these into a regulated business. You can appreciate it and laugh from that alone.
>>156082721>It's one of the greatest cartoon series of all timeNo it's not. It's dogshit made by two faggots.
>>156082721the fact it ended three years ago and its entire studio has been sold twice since then?
i like the show but its fans are obnoxious faggots that overrate how good it is. and when theyre not doing that theyre endlessly quoting it sniffing each others farts for being "in the know">cigar???>ignore me!!!! xD>spanakopita!!!!!!!!!!!!1theyre like the lamest hipster faggots on the planet insisting their favorite shit is an underrated masterwork all that being said i do have a copy of that giant compendium they put out. snagged it for cheap when i still worked at b&n
>>156086159you sat in the black dirt, didn't you?
>>156086159They hate us cause they anus. The show is the best cartoon ever.Watch it from the beginning. Ill probably rewatch the halloween episode this weekend.
>>156082721Unironically, the heavy serialization is what prevented Venture Bros having wider reach. Venture Bros was "ahead of its time."
>>156086103They sold AstroBase?
>>156082721fanbase is crazy thoughi bought a few artbooks and now they’re $400+ each.love it
>>156082721Is this show for gays or am I stupid ?
>>156089165You are both
>>156084364NTA but while that's an aspect of the show from the start the non-cape super scientist aspect is really the heart of the first two seasons.
>>156082721>yet it feels like it has next to no reachIt was created by two dudes for themselves and it's filled with pop culture references only them and a specific type of nerd are going to understand>>156087701This too. Imagine yourself new to the series and you're skipping ahead every so often and imagine the order of events you do watch is this->Rusty is the son of Dr. Venture>Then suddenly he has a weird midget brother who kind of looks like their Dad and the dude has a hot wife>Oh he died at some point and Rusty inherited his cribWhere did the midget come from? Why is he so successful compared to Rusty and you'd never know he had dealings with the InvestorsGood show but it's a show where context is needed because otherwise you'd probably miss all the parts where it's made clear Hank also wants a normal family, not just Dean
>>156082721>Is it the episode count? The premise? The channel it aired on?you just listed the most negative, positive, and neutral things about it in order.
>>156089875Nah, adult swim is a universal sign of unquality. Venture bros is the single greatest show to ever grace it by far. Everything else is literally unwatchable. Definitely not neutral. And there's nothing wrong with the episode count either.
>>156089927>unqualitynot at the time it wasn't. it went to shit around the same time they canceled VBdo you not want more episodes? we want more.
>>156082721It's not rocket science, it's just sort of narrowcasted to a certain audience. "Geek," Gen X and elder millenials who grew up in the shadow of Hanna Barbera. It's the two of them riffing as pals on what they find funny. Many of us also find it funny, but it's just not so for a broader audience. Not unlike Wonder Showzen and several others of its generation.
>>156089939VB got very tired near the end and clearly needed to be put out to pasture, but I was saying there are well enough episodes to satisfy normalfag curiosity and foster popularity. I would definitely like to see a spiritual successor at least.
>>156090029I definitely think if we'd gotten a proper season 8 instead of the movie, that would have been a fine stopping point.but I meant each season should be longer, not that we should have had more seasons.
>>156090029A Rusty Venture prequel might be fun.
>>156090346you're just trying to trick me into giving you a rusty venture
It was a passion project with a real story and even solid character development. Not enough people cared because it was on the channel for stoners to laugh at the milkshake being mean to the meatball.
I like Rusty Venture.
>>156091287Ironically, I can't think of another channel that would've let Venture Brothers last as long as it did.
>>156091244I saw this joke coming a mile away. But I still posted because I actually would like a Rusty Venture prequel.
>>156083113I think there is a lot of truth to this.
>>156082721We could get more shows like this one if we work together in our own indie projects.
>>156084364Venture Bros was one of those wait until I was older things. I'm saying this because my Dad had a DVD of it he got from it back in the 2000s.
>>156082721We've could've have this.
>>156091806young rusty could be very good.means more of that team venture, Action Man in particular I'm very fond of.but you could go back even further to Col. Lloyd Venture's era. That's what I want.
>>156082721>greatest cartoon series of all time>show is a failureI believe the creators once said the over arching theme of the entire series was "failure"Somehow it's only fitting that it's still the greatest show but also a failure at the same time. It's almost karmic in a way.
>>156093907tryin! Working on something right now
>>156082721The first couple seasons are good, but the immediate appeal is very niche, and by the time it starts getting more accessible to regular people there are a bunch of episodes they must go through first to get to that point.
>>156094147What is this? Were they meaning to do a spin off?
>>156084452You don't believe this.
>>156082721Too niche. It's my favorite show
>>156094147ew more chuddy content? no lets greenlight more women shows and a show about an asian man being asian instead
weakest bait. shun.
>>156094148Have we ever seen Jonas Venture as a boy adventurer? That might be interesting. I wonder how he got along with his father.
>>156082853My first episode was the one where Dr. Orpheus and the Triad find out that The Outrider can travel into hell, and he tries building a portal out of lawn equipment.Knowing nothing else about the show at the time, I figured Orpheus was the main character, the Ventures themselves hardly registered on my radar.
>>156095591>Have we ever seen Jonas Venture as a boy adventurer? He might not have been one. Rusty only got to do boy adventuring because of the fame and resources Jonas had got. That's not to say that the Venture family wasn't well off after Lloyde Venture, but they probably didn't really start hitting their biggest highs until Jonas Sr. was at the reigns.>I wonder how he got along with his father.Probably didn't. His promiscuity and massive ego is probably his way of rebelling against his upbringing.
>>156082853The season premieres were the worst (best) for this. all of them besides 6 were direct continuations of whatever nonsense happened in the last seasons finale, and filtered 90% of people watchingMy first episode was S5E1, where the opening scene had a 3 minute montage of several army factions, pocohantus cucking an army guy, teenager getting brought home by a pilgrim on a flaming horse, and doctor venture waking up next to a giant fly who that he definitely had sex with
>>156095784honestly the only thing I ever disliked that they did in those terms is when they did that halloween special that takes place in the middle of another episode
>>156095942Anytime a show like this assigns some huge timeframe for one episode is dumb. it was the same episode i mentioned explicitly taking three months from fall into winter*ACTUAL SPOILER* especially when they always planned to honor the Action Man stroke prediction bit from S1
>>156095591>>156095694well the thing is Lloyd Venture is jonas's grandpa. We've never seen Johnas's dad / Lloyd's son. only ever been alluded to, he doesn't even have a name.He would have been the roaring 20s / depression era / interwar venture...then probably died (disappeared?) tragically in some kind of WWII super science experiment or extremely early space age accident...maybe inspiring Jonas to be so into space.as Jonas dies in "1987" lets just assume he's in his early 50s placing his birth in the mid 30s.
>>156096241>well the thing is Lloyd Venture is jonas's grandpa.I know. Which is why I didn't address Lloyd as Jonas Sr's. father.
>>156082721I didn’t like the Bowie retcon (oh, ahaha, you can cope and see it as a Marvel/DC joke, yeah?) but I guess it was one of those narrative rip off the band aid fast so the rest of the story can happen deals.
>>156096354No you didn't anon! Just stand back and let me handle this...Simple genealogy is something only fit for super scientists like myself.
>>156096477yeahh plus I get it. I get it on a bunch of counts. Still, it's a shame. It helps, I think, that he is at least a member of real-Bowie's entourage, and posed on his album cover.>>156096354>I knowI'm not surprised anon thought you didn't, though. lotta people get that wrong.
can we just officially declare 'IT WAS A GOOD SHOW' is no longer sarcastic? I like that meme.
>>156094147Genuinely insane to me that adultswim went with President Curtis over this
>>156094922A pitch yeah.>>156095327That's why today Adult Swim sucks.>>156098299I know right. WTF?!
>>156098299Nah. Lazzo was the reason VB kept getting seasons because he personally liked the show. VB's good but it was never AS's heavy hitter and it took years for a wider public to realize the show existedRick and Morty is popular, brings in the money to pay the bills and has Keith David as a reoccurring cast member so AS is going to give that show better treatment with a spin-off series and because they can afford Keith David
>>156098696I'll never understand some of these revelations. Lazzo hated Space Ghost but liked VB? Spielberg was the one pushing for Elmyra on Pinky & the Brain?
>>156094147New Blue Morpho? Ghost Robot? Joseph and his technicolor nightmare coat? TRIANA?!
>>156098725Actual that's Night Dick.
>>156098704Space Ghost is probably embarrassing if you're the guy running shit but your humble beginnings started with "animating" preexisting animation cells telling aimless jokes while the celebrity guest chuckles confusingly in the background. Produced in the buildings closet btw
