What's your favorite segment? Mine's probably The Shinning.

(Also feel free to talk about the 3 Treehouse spinoff episodes and Thanksgiving of Horror if one of your favorites is for some reason one of those.)

Can we talk about the non treehouse simpsons Halloween episode from like 10 years ago

No it's a regular episode of the show. So other than saying I liked it there's not much else to say.

I love how they took the "the helpful groundskeeper gets axed as he comes to help" thing from the Shining and just.. kept repeating it, in the next two segments. Best part is, if you haven't seen the movie, it's still funny.

I don't think it's the funniest, but I really love the first Treehouse of Horror for how much more surreal the tone and imagery was. The haunted house segment that kicks it off is really memorable to me because no other segment really felt like that ever again.

Treehouse of Horror V is probably the best overall though, all three segments are fucking hilarious and memorable. The time travel segment is probably my favorite out of that one just because of how much they play around with the premise, you can tell they were having a blast writing it. I don't think it counts as a proper segment, but the ending with the "fog that turns you inside-out" comes so far out of left field it gets me every time.
    >>
    >>156028143
Naw, the best overall trilogy is IV. The Devil, the school bus and Dracula.

You see, the problem with treehouse episodes is that it is almost always parodying something that is popular or well known, and really really relies on you knowing the thing id parodizes. Like all the SW parodies rely on you watching Star Wars. When it can stand on its own, without an inkling of the source material, those are the good episodes.

They went with a completely different color palette in that episode compared to what was normal for the show and it makes it immediately stand out. Mostly darker more washed-out colors and super saturated ones for certain lighting effects, like the reds and oranges in Kang and Kodos' ship. It makes the whole thing feel almost dream-like.

It's this one and the Raven segment for me, it's funny to have Homer speak in that ridiculous 19th century romantic poetic verse. It still feels perfectly in character because of his delivery, it's amazing.
    >>
    >>156038391
The Raven, to me, is one of Dan's more underrated performances, especially this bit where he seamlessly goes from a dramatic delivery befitting a more serious adapation to "annoyed Homer" on "Take thy beak from out my heart and take thy form from off my door."

For the past few seasons, every two years they've done a "Treehouse of Horror Presents," a separate Halloween episode not bound by the usual TOH format:

    >Not It: a half-hour parody of guess what
    >Simpsons Wicked This Way Comes: anthology specifically parodying Ray Bradbury stories
    >The Revengening: this year's, a half-hour "I Know What You Did" parody that canonically brings Apu back
"Thanksgiving of Horror" predates this, and was obviously Thanksgiving-themed horror segments.
    >>
    >>156045144
I didnt know about those. Sounds fine but why do another tangentially halloween themed thing when the main one has been seriously lacking for years? As in, sometimes the segments were not even horror/halloween related (Mr and Mrs Smith parody comes to mind).

That said, I kinda liked the idea they had of a canonical Halloween episode (forgot the name). The problem I had with it was how after 30+ years they suddenly remembered Lisa is supposed to be 8 years old and was an annoying scary kid the whole episode

This year's was poopshits. Poopshits from an assbutt.
The first segment was a parody of Slip. Why the fuck would anyone parody Slip? Three people watched it. Me, my wife and the poor unfortunate sap unlucky enough to have had to edit it. Down to the black best friend, it was a direct parody of a show nobody has ever heard of and nobody ever watched. Zoe Lister Jones' titties didn't make it watchworthy.

To be fair, people going through that much effort to create a 3D model and then integrate it into the real world was such a wildly divergent pipeline that I can't blame people for speculating that there were plans for the assets in the future.

Realistically, though, it's most likely that the 3D modeling itself was meant for a combination of toy designs and to help standardize character sheets within the show bible for drawing into 3D forms. And a lot of what that episode achieved had been fundamental to the development pipelines of the show for the last 20 years

Part of what really makes it stand out is that the segment feels less like a conclusion and more like the start of a story. There's no real punchline besides Homer deciding to check out erotic cakes. It's not comically bleak or tongue in cheek like most Treehouse of Horror endings. "What if cartoons became real life?" is the kind of premise that started a lot of movies during that period

Honestly every line from the zombie episode is memorable. I think my favourite part is when the zombies tap Homer's head, it sounds hollow, and they angrily walk away yelling for brains.

Well, class, the history of our country has been changed again, to correspond with Bart's answers on yesterday's test. America was now discovered in 1942 by "some guy", and our country isn't called America anymore. It's Bonerland.

    >>

yeah they posted the link without buying it to make it link to the simpsons website so someone squatted it. (though the owner has a good argument for keeping the site since the site's name is so generic).

I did a marathon of the first 13 Treehouse of Horrors and realized the obvious: The show lost its soul at the exact moment when Matt Groening decided that the drawings should be as stiff as a brick and on-model. All the good writing in the world cannot save the show when the drawings are so plain and boring. This is best exemplified by seasons 7 to 9 when the writing was still somewhat sharp but the animation was working against it, so even by then you felt like the show was on its last legs.
    >>
    >>156024459
3, 4, 5 and 6 are ones where I enjoy all three segments. Love marathoning them.
Also Love Citizen Kang from 7, but the other two segments I felt didn't do as much with the concepts as I would have liked, even if they still do have some great laughs.

    >>
You had to be there for bartmania...my english teacher did what they all do around this time of year and showed us the raven clip from TOH. it kinda struck me as weird because it was the mid 2000s and the Simpsons were fading but not quite gone. Well then again people were singing the Spider Pig jingle so...reminiscing it's fascinating; even my niece and nephews kinda got into them for a good while when FXX was doing its ESE marathon.
    >>
    >>156098990

I genuinely believe the Simpsons' Raven is most people (especially Americans) introduction to the poem. I was surprised when I got older and read it in high school that it's much longer than what we see on TV.
    >>156098417
They're both excellent. Arguing about which is better is just nitpicking. You've got two pieces of gold with IV and V. From reading the thread, people who like IV more enjoy the presentation and Night Gallery homage, and people who like V more are going for overall quality.
I'd like V more if Nightmare Cafeteria had a more coherent ending.
