>enters a world of talking, anthropomorphic animals
>STILL doesn't "believe in magic"
I get her arc was all about overcoming the feeling to rush into adulthood or whatever, but this just got exhausting past a certain point
>>
>>156024652
It was worth it to see her get smacked
>>
>>156024417
The mom was some type of Asian, right? The girl looks full white, and the baby brother even more so.
I never read the books, but does it say if Alexandra is the "mom"? He looks even less hapa than the girl, more like a blend of Alexandra and the dad.
>>
>>156024870
Yeah I think the magic made them white.
>>
>>156024417
Some of the violence was kinda brutal. earned that Pg13 rating. I particularly liked the coyote getting a knife in its head.
>>
>>156024417

I liked it.
There were times where it was a little self-indulgent, but the work Laika did on their models and animations were fantastic.
The animal characters were great, and Tom Waits as the head coyote was a stupendous choice. They nailed the voice acting overall

oh... and the movie took 16 YEARS TO MAKE.
16 YEARS.
>>
>>156025474

Disregard, I suck cocks
the actual work didn't start until 2021.

Good not great. From a technical standpoint it doesn't get any better it's pure eye candy. Storywise it's a little generic and tropey and the main character isn't very likeable. Def worth seeing it for the visuals alone though.

Basically the Avatar of animated movies

I did, it was fucking awesome. Ever since watching Coraline as a kid I always wanted to see a Laika movie that is more mature and brutal and doesn't shy away from blood so this was basically my wet dream come true. (heh, no pun intended) It's the kind of movie I always wanted, one that has a great and unusual style and is not made for kiddies.

It's pretty great. As usual the writing isn't the greatest and the story is pretty generic fantasy, but what saves it is the insanely impressive presentation and how gritty it is at times, they really pull no punches. Curtis is the best.

>both threads on tv and co are basically dead
>movie gets less discussion than the other slop released this month
Damn i thought people were generally hyped for laika stuff, guess im out of touch even with the non normalfag crowd.
Anyway the art and animation was absolutely gorgeous, no stop motion movie will ever compete with this one in terms of that, but man the writing was pretty fucking weak. A lot of the dialouge was cringe and cliche, there were multiple plot points that didnt matter or didnt really go anywhere, a lot of the movie was just traveling back and forth between locations to get exposition dumped on, and the story itself was fairly predictable.
This feels like a common trapping with passion projects that are in production for so long. Its like the ideas have been stewing in the directors head for so long he just keeps adding more and more to the plot. The movie felt like a mini series or a trilogy cramed into 2 and a half hours of screen time. Pretty disappointing for something i was so excited for, but atleast i can appreciate it for its art. Some would brush that off as style over substance but in this case id say the style is the substance.
Also im not one to care that much about woke shit but i did roll my eyes everythime they inserted it into the writing, it felt really forced and out of play for a movie about magic and nature to have a drag queen story hour sign on prominent display in the opening.
>>
>>156030806

Yes. Some of the Portland aspects seemed more 2000s than 2010s though.
00s Portland was truly whimiscal and hopeful, with guys on double decker bikes and cheap housing.
2010s Portland became more political and intense, with only the hipster aspect carrying over from the 00s. By CHOP/CHAZA, that magic truly ended. There's too many homeless encampments now.

All Laika films are key jingling Oscar bait for morons produced by a nepo baby who treats his workers like shit and the only reason this studio exists is because said nepo baby stole Will Vintons studio from him leaving him to die alone and depressed. Coraline is the only good film they’ve made and that was largely because of Henry Selicks direction.

You read too much into Peru’s words. She was saying exactly what was on her mind: that she didn’t care about what was going on in the woods and only wanted her brother back. She was not saying “I think you’re full of shit and secretly evil.” So yeah, when she saw evidence her brother was dead she took it at face value.
>>
>>156024417
I really want to like it more. It does 3 things good: the american fae aesthetic, the surprisingly viceral violence (though mostly bloodless), and of course the actual physical production itself was fantastic.
Otherwise it has severe problems. I mostly agree with
>>156031611
It was obviously at minimum 2 movies smashed together, but someone saying its based on a trilogy makes so much sense. Dialogue was terrible for 90% of movie, with only some of well done stuff being the purposefully bad/dumb dialogue (everything the hippies said for example). The woke shit is mostly mocked and not paraded as a positive but that didn't make it fun.
My biggest gripes with the movie though are:
Every character, that isn't the two mains or the dowager, has nothing to latch onto. Only like, 4 even have names? I don't care about any of these super important characters like... eyepatch bandit, giant bird, or mail van driver.
Prue's only purpose, explicitly said by characters IN THE MOVIE, is to go to a place and exist. The only things she "does" is fuck up, fuck up with style, fuck up on purpose, and accidentally win at the end. She's an observer in the story not the driving force. Her parents do more than she does from a plot perspective. And worse, at the end she acts all badass girl boss about fixing the forest and what did she actually do besides win through pretty much pure luck.
Curtis, surprisingly, had much more agency in the story and he's so hard to watch. He has almost a negative character arc in that he sort of specifically chooses not to change? He actively chooses to continue being a puss even after having done what he does in the final scenes.
>>
Yay black afro lesbian though!
>>
>>156034876
>Curtis, surprisingly, had much more agency in the story and he's so hard to watch.
Kurtis felt like a much better protagonist, and i dont think his arc is bad, theres nothing wrong with both growing up a bit but not letting what youve done change who you are. Its ok to kill when you need too and also be a fuckin dork. I appreciate that kind of character.
My main issue is thats hes deliberately written to be an annoying and hes still that for 99% of the movie.
I guess that also goes with the other main issue i have with the film, the main girls arc. They set her up as a "dont grow up too fast" type of thing with her being a cunt to kurtis and the whole magic is le fake and gay attitude, then it just kind of goes no where. I wonder if the book had her go through a proper arc
>>

>>
>>156032228

>>
>>156035061
Agreed. I was worried Kurtis' Arc was going to have him stop being a nerd and liking DnD since it "glorified violence" or whatever the critique is. But no, the post credits shows that he's still playing RPGs with his friends. Despite going through severely traumatic experiences for his age, he didn't let it it destroy who he was.

Bit off topic, but I also can appreciate a movie that actually has the older sibling like their younger sibling from the get go. Too many kids movie has their dynamic start in the negative, and I was worried this would be the case here.

Oh I'll agree on that part. And it's ok for him not to change, its more the way he chooses that bugs me. I'm going to mostly chalk it up to the way the movie itself ends I guess. Maybe there was more in the finale of the book that fixes it for me.
>>
>>156035633
Probably right. WHile I like the movie, it does rush the ending a bit. A lot of stuff even had to be pushed to the credits animations
>>
>>156034876
>the surprisingly viceral violence (though mostly bloodless)
Really? That was actually one of the things I took the most notice of, how they don't shy away from showing blood. Even simple things like scrapes, bloody knuckles etc are a no-go for most animated features for a wide audience, but here it only takes like 20 minutes for that to happen. Even something as extreme as stabbing is not too crazy to show up in a lot of family movies, like backstabbings etc; but every time they make sure the sword or blade or whatever is squeaky clean. Contrast this to Wildwood where they don't just show every single weapon being visibly stained with blood after use, but even show Curtis process the fact he just took anothers life in real time as he sees his own reflection in his blood-stained sword
>>
>>156035662
Think they're refering to the big battle. While the protagonists clearly showed the blood in their respective fights, the Coyotes and Bandits getting torn up was fairly clean for how brutal the injuries were.
>>
>>156035662
>>156035697
Also the other scenes with dead people like where they captured the bandit king, the bird queen, or quieting of the prison. Not saying we need squibs or rivers of blood. But they were missing.
>>
>>156034876
Oh, and to clarify a bit, I do like the movie. It's somewhere between a 6.5 and 7.5 out of 10 movie. I just want to like it more but can't

For all the plot and characters in the film, I thought it was handled as well as it could be and added to the world. I personally don't mind getting to see different entities reacting to the situation presented to them in the form of Prue and Curtis being outsiders, gives depth to the world, which I thought was good as the fantasy setting feels unique and inherently mired in conflicts and politics that make it feel more lived-in than just "whoaaaa... welcome to the magical world of Cumpoohpa... ERM... did that rabbit just TALK? did that lady just move that plant with her MIND?"
facetious comparison aside I'm thinking more Harry Potter "erm, you're a wizard harry" "I AM???"
It's a really shame about what's happened to Portland now, and wild they're recreating a feeling from 16+ years ago long lost to performative politics and uproarious vitriol. Hard times.

Also did you fellas know the website has interactable models from the film?

> Decided to read the book before watching the movie

Turning a 500+ page book into a movie was not a good idea. A mini TV series would have been better considering this is a book series.
>>
>>156036861
Is the story any better
>>
>>156036861
What dissapointed you about the comparison?
This is why I DIDN'T read it desu, bc it's more about how well the movie can create the vibes of the book that stand out; part of that is character and their politics, which the movies succeeds at imo, but you'll never get as much time to flesh certain aspects or characters out while keeping a good pace.
>>
>>156034876
I mean I think what your saying has an essence of truth in how it effects my perception as a whole, but I don't think Prue rally girlbosses at the end about winning, really, it's iterated multiple time in the movie, that she IS an outsider and that this wasn't something that's her fault, but something set in motion well before her. If anything it's her actions as an individual coming of age, that FOIL the plans of (effectively) her surrogate mother that were laid out for her, things she had no control of but chose to take control of in the end for her ONE single express purpose: to save her brother.
The other character besides those 3 are kind of there to give character to the Impassable Wilds and set the stage for their own conflicts, but the movie does a decent job of showing that the politics going on have been at play for a long time. Prue is not the focal of those politics until she is at the very very end, and even then she's just here to save her family.
What I'm saying is that she literally IS an observer to the story of the Wildwood- the impassable wilds. It's not her home, but she has an unkowning connection to it, one that brings her into conflict with it and one she eventually succeeds at through her own desire and action to save her sibling.
Then she goes home. Those politics aren't for her, but she the role she had to in the end to save what she wanted to save.

/co/ is extremely normalfag. They’re probably even more out of touch than normalfags if that’s even possible.
>im not one to care that much about woke shit but i did roll my eyes everythime they inserted it into the writing
I prefer it in this context where the movie takes place in a very liberal American city where that sort of thing would be prominent if you were walking around downtown. They aren’t awkwardly cramming it into places where it feels out of place. Plus it’s PG-13, so if parents get upset they’re retarded.
>>
>>156032461
The parents are very clearly hippies. That line is played for laughs, not because Laike is making fun of they/thems, but the idea of parents caring about something like that so early.
>>
>>156037420
>girlbosses
I really only meant she girl bosses the coup. It really comes out of nowhere from a plot perspective. Its like, who cares at this point? The movie would actually have been better if she didnt do that and instead one of the other characters straight up said "dont worry about owl, we'll make sure he's freed" and then off she goes home. It would further solidify that shes not part of that world.

As for the observer part, thats mostly my problem with it. There are great movies where the main character is primarily an observer, but shes treated much closer to a living macguffin (we'll chekovs gun) than a character. She's passed around from place to place until at the end she kills the bad guy with an ass pull. A very well telegraphed, expected, and satsifying one, but an asspull nonetheless. Its so close to greatness.

but laika movies never make their money back, especially not on opening weekends
>>
>>156037991
Wildwood isn’t their “trying to win back audiences” movie it’s their “not caring about the audience” movie. They’re at the acceptance stage of people not caring about their stuff grief. They will keep funneling money into movies until they get an Oscar. Ignoring Knight’s connections, they also have partnerships with universities and their animation programs, so they literally DO NOT CARE about the clickbait box office headlines.

>>156035799
>clayface
I went to see both of these movies back to back. Clayface first, then Wildwood. Like i said, 6.5-7.5 for Wildwood, and I'd give Clayface a solid 7. I don't have enough confidence yet to say if I like Wildwood better or not. Which sucks so fucking much.

Now, the genre matters a lot there. I mostly got what I wanted out of Clayface and it did better than I had expected out of it. Wildwood did the opposite.
>>
>>156038172
That’s a bummer, but I kind of believe it. It’s a shame Laika couldn’t hit a home run script and characters to match the time spent on their visuals. Despite the press, they’re not the only people making stuff though, so it’s not the end of the world for stop-motion hipsters like ourselves.
>>

>>
>>156024417
It don't come out where I live for another week
>>
Just got back from my theater. Saw it with my mom and we both enjoyed it.
A couple of things I liked:
>Visually one of Laika's best works yet, the ending battle scene is honestly some of the best animation I've seen in a long time
>The pacing is almost nonstop, it feels like the movie crammed a lot in its 2 hour runtime
>The dark and brutal imagery, Laika did not shy away from showing death and there were some genuinely scary scenes, such as the coyote getting hit by the red mail van, only to get up and keep attacking, his face half covered in blood
>The villainess was excellent, making her sympathetic but still a genuinely evil person, I especially loved what they did with her and Curtis, it felt genuinely creepy
Now some of the things I didn't like:
>I feel like more could've been done with the two leads, Prue's arc really didn't feel present and Curtis's arc, while passable, needed more to it

While I understand the desire to have a character look as beautiful as possible, I think doing so would actually detract from this film in particular. The way the characters look is meant to contrast with the fantastical world, making its inhabitants stand out when placed next to Prue and Kurtis (Curtis?). This also works in reverse, making both our main characters stand out as outsiders amongst the fantasy folk. Just look at the humans actually from the fantasy world, they look either very clean and proper (The villainess and the governor) or they'll look fantastically gross or ugly (The bandit king or the governor's right hand man).
Like, imagine if Prue looked like the girl from Hexed. It just doesn't fit the aesthetics of the film.

I honestly forgot I was looking at stop motion puppetry for the majority of the movie. It's really insane how far the technology has come.

no i get it its just stupid and impractical. stop motion has appeal because it carries a unique visual style. when that style becomes so refined it basically disappears theres really no point. probably the best implementation of stop motion to both tell a story and carry a strong visual language is anomalisa. i dont think that movie would hit the same if it were done with cg

I think Laika is too good at stop-motion at this point. While technically mindboggling, it registers no differently than 3D animation. The story itself should be good, but the writers were either lazy or cowards. Character arcs are half-baked and there's frankly too little focus on anyone in particular for the viewer to grow attached to them. This includes the side characters. By the third act, I was increasingly frustrated by all the missed opportunities. For a movie a bit over 2 hours, it still comes off as if far too many lines and scenes were cut from the final product to its detriment.
>>
>>156041296
Forgot to add, I can't stand how the story just happens to Prue. Kurdas (Fucked gay spelling, which they HAD to make sure you knew about with the name on the cup) legitimately is more active in this story than Prue. They really should have had him act as more of a foil to Prue. They clearly wanted to do this tale about growing up and letting go and such, but they didn't do enough work to have the story be about that. Curtis was clearly supposed to be an immature character who learns to grow up, in order to enhance Prue's character, which was the overly mature character who learns to allow the whimsy of youth into her life. They could've had Curtis achieve a certain level of competence and bravado by being groomed by the Governess into her right hand man/temporary substitute for her son (they'd keep the sexual undertones, it helps add to the idea of "false maturity") . This would give us time to learn about and attach to Curtis, the Governess, and even be used for exposition of the Governess' backstory. It'd also show a good man being seduced by the false promises of evil, only to later truly mature and choose good when he saves Prue from the coyote commandant. They would have to actually tell the audience more about him being a pacifist in the first act so that when he saves Prue, it's because he's come to the conclusion that violence is not in and of itself evil, it is merely a means to an end. And in order to have this all in service of Prue's story, they need to do a little more to build her up as someone who rejects "fairy tales". They did good with having her insist she's grown up while still acting like a rebellious teen. I think they fucked up with having Prue immediately hostile towards Kurdis. Crazy amount of sexual tension in this movie. I would fuck the bird general (who just goes by "General", I suppose) and the Governess.

Wait what's wrong with Anomalisa, that movie is fucking fantastic.

I do agree with the sentiment that there is something a bit unfortunate about stop-motion becoming so advanced it becomes harder and harder to distinguish from CG animation. I don't think we're quite there yet, I think you can still see their craft in the animation, but I personally will always prefer stop-motion animation that is a little more "imperfect", cause it makes you still see the hand of the animator in it. One of my recent favorites is Onions Frankelda, precisely because it's kinda rough around the edges, but it just makes you really see these as little puppets being moved around. A similar thing is being able to see subtle fingerprints in Aardman productions.

The bigger issue is Prue has nasolabial folds, eyebags, and forehead lines (see Lars at the end). Other characters, even the adults, have 1-2 of these traits, but Prue has all 3. With the exception of Roger, but he's clearly meant to be older >>156032187.

Many of you seem to think LAIKA crammed the whole trilogy into one movie à la Spiderwick Chronicles, but they only adapted the very first book. I'm with >>156036861 in thinking this story just doesn't benefit from a 2-hour movie runtime compared to a more expansive novel that lets moments breathe more. They had too much ground to cover and too many different Impassable Wilderness "factions" to cover, all while still getting Prue and Curtis's arcs across.

And this is STILL after cutting out a good chunk of stuff like Curtis playing a larger role in getting in the Governess and Coyotes' good graces, taking the Bandit Oath, and staying in Wildwood as a lead-in to the following two books.
>>
Ill watch it, its more of deciding when this week it will be best to go. Its pretty popular in my area

>>156039266
Laika has always been a little weird with gay people in their movies. Like with snatcher crossdressing in the Box Trolls, the jock from ParaNorman having a boyfriend, and the fortune tellers who live downstairs in Coraline likely being a gay couple. Laika gets more of a pass since it's not propagandized like in almost everything else that includes that topic. Travis Knight might just have some sort of autistic fixation with it. It doesn't really seem like anything deeply sinister.
In Wildwood, it was like a lesser version of the kiss in the Rise of Skywalker.

I think Wildwood actually stands a chance. The Academy has been distancing itself from Disney. I bet they'll be giving it to different studios in the coming years unless Disney really wows them. Sequels won't cut it. They also love the "we've been working on this for 16 years!" shit.
>>
>>156039266
People just want to be mad. The two (2) gay hugs/kisses where a second long, no one made a big deal out of it, it's just something in the background like a mother hugging a child or a straight couple saying goodbye. And the Portland stuff was well within what one would expect from the context they were showing. I think it's fine to point out when companies are putting gay stuff in their products for brownie points but at some point it's just some people simply don't wanna see gay people existing period.

Saw the movie and I loved it. Completely agree with the points other anons made about the story and the brutalities they showed with the action. I do think they ought to make the 2nd and 3rd book into a film; just feels like it need more time to truly open up. Cutting too much from the book might have hurt it more. I'm glad they didn't pull back from the fighting and the shock of it, being in a "children story."

what's fucking crazy is that a huge talking point about this movie is the amount of blood and violence in it. i took both my kids with me, youngest one 6, so i warned them about this beforehand, and we just can't recall that much gore going on?? the battle was crazy, yes, but nothing that would really make any of us shocked and no imagery that "burned in", other than Curtis bloody sword reflection. is it possible that they nerfed it for UK theaters? or maybe i'm just desensitized.
>>
I watched it yesterday so I can finally comment in the thread.
Honestly, this movie was really good. I'm glad we didn't get another Boxtrolls. I don't have much problem with all the Portland stuff other than the fact that it really feels like they were just rushing through it to get to the Wildwoods as fast as possible. For the movie to actually start. The whole movie actually just feels really fast, for better or worst. There's definitely a lot of times where you thinking 'wow, you really need to let this moment breathe for a second,' and the movie goes 'we don't have TIME, NIGGER!" Which makes it strange that they dedicated like, four minutes to the coyote overacting. You coulda cut that, my man.

I get the complaint that the main character looks like they're 32, and that's a failure of the art director, but it's also clearly an intentional choice that just didn't work out, and most of the characters are animals or weird Dúnedains anyway.

It's very Narnia, I'm surprised that more people aren't making that connection to it. The Dowager is very clearly, like, the White Witch, to the point where Pru even points out that she's not gonna fall for her tricks, and then falls for her tricks super hard. It certainly gave me flashbacks.

Overall, I think I'd actually make the controversial ranking that this is their second best movie. Or at least a very strong third. Coraline and Paranorman are still very strong, but Paranorman is carried by it's third act.

>>156050398
It's not that bad, but it's also not, like, Disney. A guy gets his eyes gouged out. There's a decapitation later. Three dudes get shot. It never shies away from violence. If I was still a teen, I could see myself loving how it doesn't patronize me. These dudes are fighting for their lives.

Just saw it. Everything on a technical level is a 10/10 for me, especially the ending fight scene. It's honestly one of the most beautiful animated movies I've seen, full stop, and I admire and love that about it. That being said, I thought the story was alright. I was kinda disappointed by how the world of the woods wasn't exactly set up, in terms of each section/faction having time to be explored. Also maybe I missed something, but I felt like the reason literally everyone was at each others throats was also little hard to understand (seemed like it was mainly about dowager trying to fuck everything up to get her son back).

The Ivy needed more explanation. Because it's asleep but it also protects the Wildwoods from outsiders? But it destroyed that entire civilization? And honestly I found Prue to be the weakest part, she's very uninteresting aside from her motivation to save her brother, for the most part she just says a lot of sarcastic lines, and is told she's "special" by a couple of characters, just cause (I know she was born with the help of magic, but it's still a lame thing to add. It's nice she was pretty resourceful in a lot of scenes though. Some of her dialogue feels like it from forspoken, with how ironic and detached she is, and its weird because she has no reaction to talking to that giant bird when she's in the car, but calls the mystics hippies and
>so, they talk to a tree?
in that meta ironic way where it's like the writers saying "look, we know it's stupid!". Other than her and the Akwafina rat, most of the characters are pretty good, but some have way too little screen time/presence. I literally forgot about the governor and his assistant, they're like an after thought near the end of the film to tie everything up, which sucks because I found them charming and fun to watch. I don't have that many problems with the movie though, in fact, my favorite part was how violent it could be. Lots of death, burning, stabbing, some swears. The coyotes especially looked were fantastic in terms of designs

Seriously, it actually infuriates me how much I want them to succeed for their animation but literally no film beside Coraline has ever made me actually care about its cast and what is happening to them. Every time I rewatch one of their films I just watch it for the visuals and don't even think about what is happening in the narrative. The thing is that I actually enjoy the three examples you gave.
>Never saw the Boxtrolls, but judging by the .gif, the crossdressing is played for laughs
>The fortune tellers from Coraline was something ambiguous that you had to determine based on context clues
>ParaNorman is honestly great gay representation, being the first in an animated film and also being a really good punch line for Norman's sister constantly trying to hit on the jock. I remember seeing it in theaters with my parents when ParaNorman first came out and everyone laughed when the boyfriend reveal happened. It was great
My issue isn't that gay or LGBT things exist in the media I watch, I just want it to have meaning. Thats why I don't mind when Prue's dad says something woke. It has the purpose of informing us about his character.

At the end of the first book, he stays in the Wildwood because he feels at home with the bandits despite having loving parents and a happy home life. This leads to a major arc of the next two books where his parents are frantically searching the world for any trace of him and his sisters go into the Wildwood looking for him because the little idiot just disappeared without even leaving a post-it note.
>>
>>156049211
That was an another reason why I found the movie disappointing, they cut out most of Curtis scene from the book and focused on Prue the most. They couldn't even put him on the official movie poster, he was on the front of the book.
>>
>>156052475
You would just leave your family and friends with zero answer though.

I'd have a harem of coyote wives till the day I died
>>
>>156050398
I mean, the movie cold opens with a suicide, and a lot of the imagery with the coyotes is pretty brutal.
I remember the scene where Prue is getting chased by the coyote soldier, only for him to get ran over by the red mail van as being pretty intense. Especially when the coyote seemingly disappears for a few seconds only to practically jumpscare the audience as it attacked Prue, his face half covered in blood.
Its PG-13 fits well, but Laika definitely pushes things here and there.

Laika also does not like doing sequels
Anyways, MAYBE the books will get adapted as a graphic novel (albeit they'll have more book accurate designs) in case people want a visual medium representation?
Comics are like the direct to vhs medium and I say this as a fan
>>
>>156052481
This bothered me. The parents called the police over Mac's disappearance, and I'm wondering what they even told them. Prue would have been interrogated for hours, choppers would have been hovering over the woods, etc.

Prue also insists her dad can't go with her, but she could have pulled him in as she did with Curtis. I know I'm overthinking it, but at least try to cross with a squad of gun-carrying cops.
I realize after typing this that a hippy family from Portland isn't super pro-police lol

i should have suspected this was a book series. that makes everything make so much more sense now.

im going to go read the books now. im assuming the books also cover the governess grooming that poor fucker a lot more too? Because i feel like that is a tiny *hint* of a plotline that gets dropped *really* fast

what does that make webcomics?
>>
Movie has blood and gore but felt less disturbing then Coraline, the violence felt like something they did not to show the brutality of the world (that they never develop) but to seem "mature" compared to other animated films.
>>
>>156031611
>This feels like a common trapping with passion projects that are in production for so long. Its like the ideas have been stewing in the directors head for so long he just keeps adding more and more to the plot.
what's weird is that it's based on a book, so I was hoping it would just stick to whatever story was in it. Have no idea how faithful it was though
>>
>>156052515
Ain't no condoms going to protect them from magic.
>>
>>156052593
Coraline similarly had several elements that diverged from the book. Their adaptations are "primarily" inspired by the source material but never a straight 1:1 retelling.
>>
>>156052648
And most of the time, that's good. What works in one medium doesn't necessarily work for another. This time tho sounds like it was a bit of a mess.

I don't know I thought it was really kind of all the coyotes to see this easy target that was right in the open among the combat and let him have a heart to heart with his rat.

Also they knew she had to sacrifice the baby at the alter, why not have people wait there to ambush her?
>>
Hows it looking in the boxoffice?
>>
>>156052820
You can't have a bunch of people ambush the big villain; they'll just cut them down like fodder to show everyone how strong they are. You know how it works. It's magic.

I personally like Prue's design and believe the eyebags accentuate the lonely burden she carries in rescuing Mac from imminent sacrifice. She's desperate and tireless. (yes i'm ignoring that previous anon's point that she could've probably pulled someone else in with her... I think blaming it on time concerns is plausible)
>>
>>156052581
As in specifically adapting a story into a webcomic because it's cheaper than a film or even a printed comic?
I dunno, billboard signs?
My point is that comics are go-to for adapting things into another medium (that is visual) because they're cheap and not complicated
They can still be good don't get me wrong
There are plenty of solid comics adapting novels and I'll outright say some of them are genuinely some of the best adaptations of the source material period but let's not kid ourselves
>>
>>156052820
>Also they knew she had to sacrifice the baby at the alter, why not have people wait there to ambush her?
IIRC it's because they wanted the granny to talk to Alexandra and "find the good in her" which is retarded and the real reason was for Prue and Alexandra to have a 1-1

Can someone explain how the animal hierarchies work, the more I think about the less it makes sense. Why are seemingly all coyotes and crows subserviant to the queen for example? The sole animal we see of either species betray her was purely out of cowardice, he would have ran at any point if given the option and only helps because he was forced to. There's also stuff that feels weirdly inconsistent, like how all animals but crows seem to exist on a human level, we never see a crow demonstrate speech despite all other birds seen can. You can't even give the "they're dumb animals" justification.
>>
>>156053529

>>156053472
Laika is a double edged sword, as a pet project of nepo babies any kind of failure is irrelevant but because of this they never write with any kind of heart or soul because they never actually get emotional about their films. Box Trolls and Early Man convinced me their scripts see a fraction as much investment as the animation.

You're an idiot but also I don't entirely disagree.
I'm fine with them CG-ing out the seams on the faces or the stands for the figurines, but basically every behind-the-scenes footage of the film involves doing everything on a big blue screen. The skies, water, and explosions are all CG, and so many of the characters are composited into the scenes instead of physically on the miniature set. At a certain point, all of these things work to undermine the impressive actual stop-motion work you're doing. Stop motion is at its absolute best when everything you're seeing is captured in-camera. For me, it's half the point of the medium.

This is pretty much my view. Visually/technically amazing, work of art. Narratively, too much going on, bit of a mess. She comes back to the woods, teleports straight to the Mystics. Wake up you're not dreaming cliche 90% of the way through the film. World felt too big to be coherent for one film, exact opposite of what Coraline/Boxtrolls does so well, making a comparatively smaller theater of action (household/township) come to life so much more expansively. Also, bandits/Mystics could have just been one faction, her going to that tree felt like an unnecessary detour for information that could have been gotten elsewhere.

>>
>>156025474
>There were times where it was a little self-indulgent,
I think this is my biggest complaint. The movie was actually gratuitous to a point that it rubbed me the wrong way. I appreciate the craft of stop-motion and the absurd dedication, but there were times during the big fight scene where I just wondered what the point was. I usually appreciate spectacle for spectacle's sake, but there's so much computer compositing going on that the effect is somewhat lost at that scale. It was like the Michael Bay of stop motion films; at some point my brain just shut off.

Like, yeah, we know if you're a nepo baby with a studio with infinite time and money, you can achieve insane things, but that definitely resulted in some shallowness here. Probably could have cut 20 minutes or so and been better off.

>>156070605
>leikas stuff became so industrialized and sterilized that it look like cgi with a filter on it
I had the same thought. Everything was so smooth it started to feel uncanny. There are some scenes where the mouth movements in particular felt like I was just looking at a real mouth superimposed on a model.

I still love the movie and think it's an amazing accomplishment, but I wouldn't mind seeing Laika scale back for their next release.

>>
>>156071643
Nah, the story was basically over at that point, and it was clear Laika was just showing off. I've got no problem with showing off, I just think there are better ways to do it than compositing a bajillion stop-motion soldiers into a giant scene where everything gets muddled. At some point, it's more about the computers than the stop motion, and it genuinely becomes less impressive than a more "simple", straightforward scene, like the giant bird flight. I find even a lot of the stuff around Portland or in her house was more impressive, composition-wise.

Like there are interviews about the final battle scene where Travis Knight is talking about how they had someone specifically to keep track of the cuts and scrapes on Pru's hands for "maximum realism", but that makes me realize he's starting to lose the plot. "Realism for realism's sake" is one of the most shallow things you can hope to achieve in any style of animation. And the problem is that Knight has already proven he can do it. Increasing the scale of it isn't as impressive, in my opinion. All it proves is that he has a lot of time and money and nobody to answer to.

Have we not already learned that creativity flourishes better under limitations? Nothing about the big battle scene was "creative". It was just a blunt instrument. There's an alternate world where this movie never got completed, and it's the "cobbler and the thief" of stop motion.

This is an opinion I’ll probably be shit on for, but I think stop-motion like this sorta misses the point entirely and I’m not really a fan. So much of this movie is CGI that it might as well just be CGI
>but it looking like CGI is a testament to how masterfully the animators have advanced this art form
My argument isn’t that it’s not masterful, it’s absolutely an impressive and incredibly accomplished feat. But I like seeing “homemade” aesthetics. When half of the effects feel like CGI, all of the character pieces were CGI 3D-printed smoothed-out pieces to begin with, and everything is this level of polished, it just loses that appeal that makes the artform impressive to the naked eye. Like I’m very impressed, but I don’t find this level of polish nearly as visually interesting as other stop-motion movies.
>>

Also, this movie is distributed by Fathom, not by their older partners that gave them wide releases. All things considered it performed better than expected.
>>
>>156073234
I think this sentiment is present among even people who like the movie. I thought the movie was great, and I've never seen anything else like it, but this is basically just criticism specifically for Laika, which seems to be turning into its own private stop-motion industry with effectively zero accountability.

One of the biggest driving factors in stop-motion is the passion of the creator, but Laika is in the unique position of being able to find the tipping point of that. I won't accuse Travis Knight of being "passionless", in fact it's quite obviously the opposite. It's just that he's got access to so many resources that he's starting to outweigh his own passion with them, and is in danger of becoming "soulless" as a result.

I grew up in portland when he was still around and all you ever heard if you were in an artistic field was to never work for them, he was infamous for being awful to his employees and was ousted from the taken over studio because he refused to produce anything after he was bought out

A movie like that literally never gets made with the genders reversed.
the plot is about a girl rescuing her borther, when was the last tiem we saw a male character rescue a female character in a modern animated movie? like 30 years ago?
all the impotant tough characters are female or none white but literally every white guy is weak or emasculated.
When was the last time we saw a movie with competent and confident male heroes and female characters that were comic relief and losers?

No, there's scene compositing for things like the giant battle at the end since those giant clumps of fighting models would be impossible to reach but they really did sculpt and print and hand animate 3k different puppets for the movie, go watch the adam savage video they go into length how they had to design new types of maquettes and armatures for certain characters to address limitations of the traditional wire ones, and new rigs to have things like musculature adjusting as arms extend and flex

It has potential, but was a bit of a let down. Didn't like the weird liberal parents, satanic gypsy lady, beta male love interest that doesn't get the girl, lack of traditional family structure, ineffectual White male politician, minority bandits that are actually the good guys, sodomite couple, or unflattering art style for the girl but other than that it was a decent rip off of Labyrinth and Narnia that unfortunately failed to reach the heights of either of the superior movies it was quite heavily borrowing from.

That moment and how she does funny faces to calm down the very infant she had planned on sacrificing just sold her as a villain for me.
It's blatantly clear that she WAS and CAN be a good mother and a good person outright but her grief locked her priorities to do something as heinous as what she about to do.
Not even out of sadistic pleasure or anything, she genuinely seemed to like what little time she had with Mac even if she accepted she had to kill him

Oh, that reminds me I also wasn't impressed with the inclusion of Aquafina. Much like Seth Rogen, Zendaya, Chalomet, Pedro Pascal, Tom Holland, Sidney Sweeney, and Eric Andre they just sort of ruin the movie for me and always give me the impression they got the job because of their connections rather then any talent. It was a rather inoffensive performance by her, but I think it would've been better if they had been a sort of Winnie the Pooh kind of old English guy

I wish they had a dynamic more like the vibes I get from pic related. Like a boy and girl who know each other from school and maybe both like each other that get pulled into an adventure together and kind of gradually fall in love. Something like Daniel and Ali from Karate Kid or Brian and Kiersten from Little Monsters
>>
>>156037731
If they're going to be like that then they should portray it accurately. Putting all the woke stuff in but then acting like it doesn't result in a bunch of litter and homeless is ridiculous. Heck, the idea that a couple of liberal hippies could afford a 1,400 sqft house and two children just by selling some handmade crafts at a farmers market once a month is outright harmful.

I agree that felt really tacked on and also like both the governor and owl were very brief characters it was easy to forget about. They didn't really explain if the dowager governess was formerly in charge before the Alexei stuff came out, how he came into power (like, he's a governor. Did they depose a democratically elected official because he wasn't sure how to handle an outsider and his assistant was fussy) how does she know the bandit leader will be a good leader? Because he's black?

Why are the bandits good guys? No one's stopping then from farming. There's thousands of acres of unclaimed land up for grabs. Why does the dowager governess have a buck of excess food? Does she make the coyote army farm for her? It would make more sense if they raided the farm town, but then you couldn't portray them as the good guys. Why do the coyotes even listen to her? It would make sense if she used magic to make them like people but then the other animal people don't make sense. What was up with her "dark coven" was she already a witch or did she fall in with them? Where were the other ones? Why was it wildly illegal to make a clockwork boy? All things that weren't really explained unfortunately either due to condensing the plot or because they didn't think about it
>>

I don't buy it, especially when most of the fantasy people are animals. It's not like the fantasy humans are really attractive, all the people look the same. I think it could've worked if they played it right, but it would have to be something you don't dwell on. I really feel like they should've had a Jim Henson moment where Prue runs into a talking Raven and thinks it's one of the crows and he's all like: "I'm not a crow, I'm a Raven you dreadful girl! Uh, awful things, really. They're so small and stupid. Dangle a little bit of magic infront of them and they'll do whatever you want" then he could've followed her around being her Coraline cat/Hoggle

>Curtis just spouting "Die!" and "Murder!" when correcting Prue as she's still processing Mac's abduction
Just got out of my second viewing and, yeah, this is RIGHT below Coraline for me. LAIKA's second best film. They cut some much-needed fat out of the book to make the story flow better, and I'd say it makes for a solid movie overall.

I initially didn't respect Prue enough as an active protagonist 'cause I was too bothered by her plot armor when escaping Pittock Mansion and dodging her way through a literal bloody war, but it's whatever. This was still pretty brutal as far as fairytale-type stories go, so I can roll with it. She united all the different factions and made the tough decisions to deceive her parents in the name of saving Mac. She's a great MC.

>I'm wondering what they told the police
Probably the truth.
>last we saw our daughter, she really wanted to take the baby out someplace, but we told her no
>when we got back from the craft fair, they were both gone
This isn’t a lot to go on, but does look like a possible runaway scenario, or a joyride that went south, which it is.

Then Prue comes home, but the parents don’t immediately call the police because they sit down and talk to her first. It’s hard to say if they called the police the next morning to update them about Prue’s visit.

Then they would have reported that Mac had come home. Probably they would’ve said it was a false alarm, Prue had taken Mac to crash at some lady named Alexandra’s place, everything is fine now and there’s no cause for alarm. There are plenty of police departments that would just leave it at that, unless some particular officer was real curious for some reason. The bigger mess would come from reporters if they suspected there was any story here, but it looks like they avoided getting the media involved. “Girl with hippie parents takes baby brother to crash at other hippy lady’s place. Comes home fine days later” is not newsworthy.
>>
Maybe my expectations were too high but I was disappointed. I think this is tied with Missing Link and Boxtrolls for me at the lower end of the laika list. Paranorman had more charm, wit and spark. I could barely care about any of the characters in Wildwood
>>
I think they should have cut all but two warring factions and it would be a big improvement. Just focus on the witch kidnapping the baby, and have her army fight just one other army, and you’ve got a much tighter story with more room for emotional beats and characterization.
>>
>>156063089
I can easily see this as a case of an insecure person thinking that things which apply to other people just don’t apply to them. Obviously the parents of a different missing kid will miss them. But Curtis, a loser who no one cares about, will be better off gone and can’t possibly be missed. Basically, it’s a It’s a Wonderful Life situation.

>>156087244
I disagree about collapsing the factions. Not only do I think having competing multiple factions in the Wild Woods adds texture to the worldbuilding, I submit it also is important narratively. Look at Lord of the Rings: Elves and Dwarves don't get along, even the kingdoms of Gondor and Rohan have bad blood between them, the Ents feel they are above all of the conflicts and try to tend to their trees. It takes the actions of our heroes and the active threat of our antagonists to force these disparate parties to band together, to put aside their differences and defeat evil under a common banner. It is a classic premise, perhaps maybe a bit too optimistic for today's cynical age, but I think it is an important element to the story.

I'll agree that the movie just doesn't have the time to establish these factions in desired detail like a book can, but I don't think they did a bad job just establishing the identity of each faction and give us the gist of their deal and relationship with the others.

Saw it last night. I'm disappointed. I was looking forward to this for years and when it was getting Laika's highest average ratings ever across the board I was ecstatic. So maybe I built it up too much, but I felt almost nothing from the story. The main character was annoying and everyone felt shallow. Suspension of disbelief was difficult. Everything felt contrived and going through the motions. It wasn't TERRIBLE but I wouldn't put it much ahead of Boxtrolls or Link. Not nearly as good as Norman, Kubo or Coraline. One good point is that it basically exposed hippies as selfish jerks who ruin everything.

This was my only complaint with the adaptation was how they toned down how the Dowager Governess manipulates Curtis, which robbed Curtis of a lot of his character. In the book Curtis gets drunk off wine and is manipulated into joining the army after he starts boasting. He ends up getting involved with mild heroics by kicking over a cannon the bandits were using and actually helps the coyotes capture Bandit King.

It showed why like the Dowager Governess actually liked him until and showed that he had a heroic soul beneath his fat chud exterior a lot earlier in the story.

Nobody will ever reply to you because the internet is for ignoring anything that bruises your curated bubble, but this is interesting to hear. I’ve figured people like working for Travis Knight because he’s truly dedicated to an autistic artform and gives you great job security (except for the Kubo guy obviously). Will Vinton prioritized tv commercials to stay afloat, but the creative-driven projects left something to be desired. Mark Twain was purely a curiosity and doesn’t hold a candle to Laika’s movies.

Just got home from seeing it. Saw it because of it being the same team that did Coraline and the trailer looked interesting enough. Didn't know anything else about it going into it.

>Jokes mostly landed, especially towards the ending.
>Visually the movie was incredible especially in the governor's mansion place and the whole ivy stuff at the end. I could truly see the passion put into it.
>Story felt like it told us way too much about the various factions but not enough to really care about anyone outside of the birds. The crows in particular felt exceptionally underdeveloped.
>Did not expect them to get as violent as they did, especially letting both kids murk someone.
>None of the growing up story with Prue felt like it actually got through via the script that they told. The discussion with hippy dad at the end was one of the instances where it didn't feel like it really made sense to have it happen at all since we barely saw this character development at any point outside of the intro with Curtis.
>Same applies to her doubting magic or what she just went through even happened. The entire joke with the old hippy doesn't even really make much sense because for at least two or three days now she's been talking to animals, nearly killed, and more and is explicitly there to save her brother who she believes is about to be sacrificed to some vines.
>They didn't even explain why the Dowager Governess even had a coyote army in the first place or why they were willing to die for her unless I missed something.
>The entire "magical realm hidden in a forest where everyone is baffled anyone can enter it" thing felt unnecessary. It didn't really add anything to the story whatsoever and is barely even expanded upon why it's hidden or what's going on with it.
>In general the story felt like it wanted to be longer in some parts but then spent way too much time on stuff like the actual war so it rushed those parts.

Did you want the magical realm of talking animals to just exist next to Portland with no acknowledgement of each other?

Either that or make it some secret people in the town keep quiet through some curse. Just give some reason why it even exists.

>Every fantastical concept NEEDS an explanation
You're the reason why they're making an Aunt Gladys prequel of all things

I like it well enough, more than Missing Link and Kubo, but I was still baffled once when I saw someone say it was Laika's best. It just seems impossible when Coraline is right there, near untouchable.

It was so ridiculous because at some point there are going to be people magically-inclined on said train and then go from sitting down one minute to falling to the ground from the train the next or even suddenly warping the train directly into the middle of a forest while sitting there causing a derailing regularly.

It needs one when it's the entire crux of the plot. Its existence at least needs to justify itself why it's there or why it's hidden from humans. You don't even need to go deep with it, just give us something that explains why it's hidden away and only magic-inclined people can enter it when a good third of the inhabitants are humans with no difference at all from the people in Portland five feet away.

No, the crux of the plot is the Governess trying to sacrifice a baby to get back her dead child. Everything else isn't as important. All we need to know about the barrier is that it cuts off our heroes from traditional help from the outside world, that's it's narrative function. The whys and hows it works can be expanded upon when it becomes the main focus of the plot, but this movie has a much tighter focus on the characters and their struggles.
