I don't know what it is about LawLight that's so intoxicating to me, but it scratches an itch like nothing else. I don't really even care who's topping, I just need them to fuck.

Do you prefer the dynamic they had when Light lost his memories or when he was Kira?

I prefer him full Kira mode. I don't really buy the act he was putting on when he had amnesia. Obviously, he had lost his memories, but the narrative pulls a bit away from his perspective during that arc and makes his inner thoughts more ambiguous. I like to believe that some part of him knew he was the only one capable of accomplishing what Kira had done. Or, at least, that was flattered by L's belief he was Kira, even if he had to play the offended, perfect honor student to keep up appearances.

I love the give-and-take power dynamics between the two. The way L needles him, tries to push him into dropping his facade and revealing the ugly, bloodthirsty monster underneath. That's why I feel ambivalent about top/bottom dynamics between them. Dominate L seems be be in vogue right now because people want to see Light punished, but who's topping vs who's playing submissive is never the full story with them. Both are playing 6 steps ahead trying to manipulate each other, so it's impossible to say who is really in control.

I'm sure I've mentioned these in other DN threads, but "A Tithe to Hell" by Aja and "Coexistence is Boredom" by Sakurazukamori6 are my two favorite LawLight fics. Both are post-Yotsuba Arc AUs. The first is Light/L and the second is L/Light. But in both the "submissive" partner is able to manipulate and outwit the other.

"Oubliette" by ArgentNoelle is another fic I enjoyed that features amnesiac Light. It really focuses on the cognitive dissonance he feels without his memories, his PTSD after being kept in solitary confinement for months, and the fucked up predatory nature of his relationship with L. I think the analogy it makes to Light in imprisonment being like a photon in superposition, literally two states at once, Light and Kira, changing only once he is observed, was very clever. It's still being published, and it's slow and a bit challenging to read, so I haven't caught up with it, but I'd like to go back to it once it's finished.

    >I don't really buy the act he was putting on when he had amnesia.
I do, one thing that people often overlook is the fact that Light didn't know that the death note was real until he already killed people with it. Even then he went on to beleave that he would have to give up his soul for using the death note, by the time Ryuk showed up to explain everything to Light he was far too gone. If he got the death note the same way Minoru did he might not have ended up becoming Kira or at the very least he wouldn't get so fucked up so quickly.

Nah, nah, nah man. That mf's just evil. I have receipts.

    >Literally the first thing we learn about Light is that he believes the whole world is "rotten". He already felt disgusted by society long before he made any contact with the Death Note.
Not really, it was just a generic statement that only showed that he was dissatisfied with the world.
    >After killing a murderer who was holding elementary students hostage (justified), the next target he considered was a teenage bully harassing a classmate for $20 (psychotic).
Nope, what happened was that Light was that wanted to confirm that the death note was real and has considered using a bully as his test subject. At that point in the story Light didn't know if the death note was real or not, he didn't know if he killed someone or not but he did want to get the results quickly because not knowing would be psychologically devastating.
    >Then, Light fantasizes about killing people just for being annoying in a public space.
Not really, it was more so a sarcastic remark expressing his frustration with bad people (Ryochin being bad for being frustrated with his mom not being annoying).
The kid cussing his mom in the first panel is Ryochin from the previous scene. So we know Light's issue with Sudou's behavior wasn't born from any empathy for victims. Likely, it was more about a violation of Light's aesthetic principles.
Or maybe he dislikes them both.
    >While it's true that Light, at this time was not 100% positive that the Death Note worked, and therefore may not have beleaved there would be any consequences to this line of thought, he had enough doubts to feel it merited a second test. It's also reasonable to say that these are not the thoughts of the kind-harted well-adjusted honor student he likes to pretend himself to be.
At this poit Light was already in a unique situation because he had already killed someone but he wasn't sure if he truly did it do to the supernatural aspect of his weapon. There is simply no way to know how any person would react in this situation.
    >>
    >We see Light briefly felt remorse over the relative morality of killing a dangerous murderer over vs killing a man who was harrasing a woman on the streets. But he rationalizes that worry almost instantly, grouping both men under the same umbrella of "rotten people".
He didn't, his dialogue was about him convincing himself to use the Death Note to change the world.
    >Again, "the world is rotten" is a consistent framework. This belief was not given to him by the Death Note. It's a core part of his worldview.
The only thing wrong with this that it's simply that it's too pesimistic for someone his age.
    >Next, we see Light experience anxiety over what he is doing. However, exactly what he is feeling here is somewhat ambiguous. We know he is worried about his life and his mind.
Light was worried about losing his mind and soul but still pushed himself to go through with it beleaving that it would be worth it.
    >This consearn about his "mind" could just as easily be reffering to the toll his psyche is taking, wondering what consequences are wating for him. As we see from his later conversation with Ryuk, he fully expects to be killed for his actions.
That makes him heroic. A kid pushing himself to kill at the cost of his mind and soul because he believed he was doing good.
    >Finally, Light never intended to limit his killing to violent criminals.
    That's not a bad thing.
    >The later stages of his plan would involve killing off "useless" people too, more subtly.
You got a few things wrong. First it wasn't useless people but rather "people who were able but unwilling to contribute to society" like hikikomori (who abuse their parents love for them in order to act as parasites) or people who abuse the welfare programs. It was also ambiguous if he would actually kill them or simply use his religion/media to threathen them into compliance because while Light was willing to kill anyone he deemed evil he also protested Mikami's killings of former criminals who served their sentence.
