If you used cultured dairy to make it then it can smell a bit like cheese. I suppose it could smell like fresh mild cheese if it's not cultured. If it wasn't cultured and it smells like funky cheese then it's probably spoiling, likely because it still had too much moisture left in it.

Fresh butter doesn't smell at all. If it smells it's off, or it's been stored badly.
