health concern required highly restrictive diet. rice is one of the things i can still eat in large quantities as a staple. bought quality nip cooker. have now set up a routine where i add the rice/water in morning, set timer, return home to rice smelling apartment, eat dinner.

it's not bad. i sort of understand the appeal now even if you aren't required to have this sumo wrestler diet.

I bought this one 8 years ago.
    10/10 buy.
Throw the rice and water in, take a shower, and it's done.
This model talks to me in Korean.
It even makes choo chooo noises when the steam purges.

If your rice cooker doesn't have Japanese, Korean or Chinese writing on it, it's probably trash.

what are some other things you can do with the rice cooker? I have been using one for about 2 years now but surely you can make more with it? All I do now is throw in sauces or like some precooked ingredients to heat up with the rice while the cooker is still warm.

Rice is by far the worst of the big three, so I shan't be buying a utensil that solely exists to cook it.
    >>
    >>22263703
    big three?
    >>
    >>22263713
I think he means potato, pasta and rice? I would consider pasta the worst of those 3. A good pasta dish is made by the sauce and/or cheese, not the pasta itself. Potatoes are so versatile but a hassle depending on what you are doing with it. In the time you can cook a simple potato dish you can make 2 rice or pasta dishes.
    >>
Who here soaks/washes their rice? Do you filter the water you use? What's the best rice and why does basmati suck ass?

    >>
    >>22263802
I don't bother with rinsing. I used to do it but I honestly see/smell/taste no difference.
    >>
    >>22262216
The Rice cooker can also cook other dishes too. Like for example, steamed egg/egg-custard
    >>
    >>22263802
    >>22263807
The purpose of rinsing rice is to wash away things like dust and dirt as well as starch, especially the excess starch.
The number of cycles to rinse depends on whether you want the rice to be sticky or not.

The cheap ones are NOT worth it. They burn the rice. You need to drop more like $60-80 for a proper machine to get proper rice. Otherwise the stove is FAR better. Hell a crockpot is better, albiet slower.

I've been cooking rice for most meals for about 15 years so I can do it pretty well. These days I meal prep and do 1 cup of rice then fluff it and divide it into 4 portions, 1 for the meal I'm eating that night then 3 for the meals that'll be my lunch for Mon/Tue/Wed. I just don't need a rice cooker.
    >>
    >>22265510
1 cup for 4 meals, are you a hamster?
    >>
    >>22265520
This is a weird reply and I can't tell if you don't know that rice expands when you cook it or if you think all I'm eating is rice.
    >>
    >>22264205
All brands make a 3 cup that can do 0.5 cup minimum. There are some tiny models but i find a standard 3 cup running the minimum batch works the best anyway.
    >>
    >>22263802
Jasmine. Quick rinse because it's clumpy otherwise. Tried filtered once to test, made no difference, stopped using filtered.
    >>
    >>22265290
it keeps it way above bacteria breeding ground territory
    >>
    >>22262216
because it takes up space for something I would need once every month or 2, and a pan with a lid works perfectly.

I'm mixed and I love carbs. Ergo, I like both.
    >>
Toast is trash, I eat real bread
    >>
Toasters haven't been good since they started making them extra wide to accommodate Jew bagels. Your bread isn't supposed to be toasted hard all the way through, only the surface should be toasted while the inside remains slightly soft and plush. To achieve this you need the bread to be very close to the heating elements. Or you could get that one Japanese autism toaster that uses steam.
    >>
    >>22266151
    Narrow slot toasters suck shit.

I can microwave rice that tastes the same as rice cooked on a stovetop so I don't need a rice cooker either.

Do you have one? I think they’re convenient in theory but I don’t like having the same lid for air frying and pressure cooking, too hard to clean
    >>
    >>22267243
Actually never mind, I think that’s a 2 lid model
    >>
    >>22265598

    >>
    >>22264229
It sings you a little song and its enclosed so water does boil over
Only flaw it has is that you can toast the rice or spices in it
    >>
    >>22262216
I forget if rice cookers were spared Alton Brown's general wrath of unitaskers.
    >>
    >>22267243
I've had one for three years, its really not that annoying to clean. I use it for everything from Rice, soups, stews, and all my toasting/airfrying
    >>
    >>22265290
It's far more dangerous to put freshly cooked rice in a big tupperware container in the fridge then chip away at it for 3-4 days. That is how you get bacillus cereus poisoning. The critical detail frequently overlooked is that pan frying does NOT kill this bacteria. Leaving rice in rice cooker on keep warm setting overnight is safe as the cookers are programmed to maintain a temperature above pasteurization, bacillus cereus never has a chance to grow in the first place.
    >>
    >>22262216
ive cooked so much rice in a pot that i don't feel like i need one at all. i simply don't want one. well, cya!
    >>
    >>22268001
    Thanks, for sharing.
    >>
    >>22267974
Pan frying kills the bacteria, doesn't kill the spores. You're possibly right about the "big Tupperware container," but if you spread it out and get it below 40° quickly it's just as safe as you keeping it above 140°.
