This experiment was stupid since he insisted on getting salt from the sea which used up most of his budget since he included the cost of flying to the coast to gather sea water.
You can make a chicken sandwich from scratch for less than 50 dollars easily unless you're including buying a cow for milk which he didn't.

I hate that retarded argument. It's like saying repairing the axle on a car costs 100,000 dollars because you had to hand cast, stamp and machine all the parts and then build all the specialized tools and had to go to mechanics school. That's not how shit works. Most people who do it watch a YouTube video and buy cheap parts from RockAuto and hand their mechanic buddy a handle of liquor or two and the job gets done. The entire point of modern society is that we have other people who perform specialized tasks so that other people can do specialized tasks instead of doing everything individually like we did in the fucking Stone Age.

They only charge that because people will pay that. These prices are a reflection of society. 1.35 will absolutely get you a slice of roast beef and a bit of good cheese if your deli is willing to sell by the slice. But a big mac, fries, and a coke are a lot more than 1.35 today. 9.29 will get you a lot farther, don't you think?

Here's the flow chart for sandwich choices OP:
    >want cold cut sandwich/wrap for lunch
    - Make it at home, wrap, and bring with
    >want a hot sandwich for lunch
    - Get it from a food truck or nearby restaurant
    >emergency, need food quick
    - Get whatever from local place

While you can technically make a hot sandwich at work using stuff like portable crock pots, it's not work the effort involved usually. They do also have microwave hot plates and stuff that can be used to toast, but I've found those are fiddly and not worth the effort. And forget about anything fried like a chicken sandwich, definitely never worth doing that at home. Feel free to spend away at restaurants, they are cheaper and easier. Especially due to oil/fat costs.

There is no reason to ever get a cold cut from a wagie who will stiff you and get shit in your meal. Cold cut and PBJ type sandwiches last hours and can be shipped cold. Tortilla wraps stay good for like 1-2 months, there is no excuse when it comes to wraps and pinwheels. They refrigerate perfectly. And most cold cut sandwiches will be capable of being wrapped in parchment and ported to work either the morning of or night before.

It is cheaper by all metrics to do a cold cut at home. Time, effort, materials, all cheaper. You will literally wait longer at Subway to get one made for you and you will pay double for shitty meat (or worse if the wagie skimps on your serving). If you bake your own sub bread, yeah it's longer - but you can make 4-5 sub rolls at once, enough for a whole week. And more importantly - you can "upscale" it with higher end deli meat and better bread. Plus ALL of the Subway sauces are sold at Walmart if you are hung up on that.

Also, sometimes you are the only person who can make rarer sandwich types. If I want a po-boy, I have to make it. No one in my county makes them. I cannot buy it. Used to have a food truck that made them, they went out of business.
    >>
Oh, and for the common complaint that
    >I don't want 5 sandwiches back to back

100% of sandwich components are freezable AND preserved such that they last 1-2 months while in the fridge, outside lettuce. Lettuce is the ONLY time sensitive item, and it can be kept for about a week or so.

You can easily freeze bread, meat, cheese, and pickles are already preserved as-is. Too much meat? Freeze some, use some. Same for cheese. Bread eats freezer space, but you CAN freeze it.

Fun fact: you can premake whole sandwiches and freeze them! Just don't let them get freezer burn.

That means lettuce is your sole enemy for time. And guess what? It does double duty for salads! Use it!

Heck, if you want to really get into it - you can make bao, freeze them, and they heat just fine in a microwave. Slightly more complicated to make, but you can do what the Chinese do if you want soft buns with fillings, aka a sandwich. Bamboo steamers are cheap. But that does involve cooking, and this board hates cooking.
    >>
    >>22257605
do people here not make like 20 sandwiches, bag them and freeze them?
then you just reach into the freezer, grab your sandwich of choice, and toss it in the microwave (or an air fryer) and bada boom bada bing you're eatin

Perhaps it was cheaper ten or fifteen years ago when produce was in a lower price range, energy costs were affordable, inflation overall allowed salaries to put more in the cart. Not today, you would have to buy in bulk to nudge down costs in order to make that sandwich home worthy and for the whole family, but if you live alone it's just a waste of money, time, ingredients.

    >>
    >>22256916
i did the math and i found out i can only just barely beat the most simple sandwich (all ingredients require no preparation besides cutting them) that's available near me and that's only if i eat the same sandwich four days in a row and not account for the time it takes to assemble and clean up.
the most simple sandwich is ciabbata, lettuce, tomato, sauce/cream cheese spread, mozzarella, pesto.
it would literally be more expensive and MUCH more time consuming for me to make any of the more elaborate sandwiches like grilled chicken breast or fried chicken
i think i might be able to beat the deli meat and cheese slices sandwiches too, but i don't want to be eating deli meat four days of the week.
for reference, all sandwiches are quite fresh, made on the day and cost 3.5 eur. i get them at a gas station so maybe they're a loss leader for them or something. gas stations used to be overpriced but now everyone else's prices exploded and these sandwiches stayed the same price.
    >>
    >>22260178
You can't make an affordable sandwich at home
anymore because produce prices have gone up
too much. Meat, cheese, veggies, are meant to be
used in a short window of time, if you live alone all
the ingredients you bought to make a cheaper
sandwich will spoil and you lose money,
in the end it's cheaper to buy one off the
    grocery store.
    >>
Any premade food is double the cost minimum. Anything in a restaurant is more like 10x the cost. I don't care how much of a retard you are, at least learn to listen to people smarter than you.

    >10x
Not even close unless you're getting something very labor- and skill-intensive, like weighing out the ingredient cost per gram of sushi and comparing it with the prices at an upscale sushi restaurant. Even then it's gonna be like 5x at the most unless you're going to some meme restaurant where you pay to have fold leaf put on your sushi.
Typical premade grocery store food will be 1.5-2x the cost of the ingredients you'd buy unless it's a loss leader like a rotisserie chicken, and restaurant will be 3-3.5x the cost unless you get a good deal or you're dealing with a niche case.

I am a third worlder, so my food costs are very different from people in America or europe, but surely this holds true?
It is obviously very different to compare the total price of food production as a whole to that of buying a single sandwhich.
But the costs seem high because he was raising a small quantity for a single sandwhich.
The price evaluation used was that of a comercial factoryfarm, which assumes you will be raising hundreds of thousands or even millions of chickens in that setup.
When you are talking about actual roots style food production, things are simply different. We raise chickens in backyards, we plant our own lettuce, tomatoes and onions, and produce our own organic fertilizer.
Sure, I need to buy flour, olives and spices, but that is because those need colder climate to grow.
Do you know how cheap a whole organic free range chicken cost me? $0.18 for the whole bird.
They are not weighted, we go by size, and that is good enough for both.
It is enough to make at least 30 sandwhichs after you are done rekovong the meat from bones.
Another thing that is cheap is sloppy joes, cheap ground meat and tomatoe sauce on a bread simply works no matter where you live.
If I had to go full poorboy diet to save money in a desperate situation, I would just buy bulk grains and beans and go fishing. Whatever I catch can either become dinner or bait, either for my fishing rod or my traps.
A simple trap on a saltwater river using bamboo and a fish head will catch me plenty of crawlfish and crabs.
I eat more seafood than rich japanese businessmen going out for sushi.
So you must ask yourselves, why the fuck does food cost so daamed much in your countries? This is not normal, neither should you think it is!
    >>
    >>22265418
he included the price of a plane ticket to fly to the ocean to collect seawater to turn into salt and that took up a majority of the cost. not joking.

    >discounted meat from a store, still perfectly good and usable

    Do you?
I can afford to eat steak everyday, I have free healthcare, so I will never go into medical bankruptcy, I can eat shrimp and lobster as poverty food.

In the USA, you either can afford to live by having foodstamps and other benefits when you make up to 40k a year, and then you endure total poverty until 70k a year because of loss of benefits.

So, if you consider the life cost/quality, you may just be poorer than me.
    >>
    >>22268206
Holy shit you've been propagandized, but I guess that makes sense. Propaganda tends to work.
But let's be real, all the worst stuff you've heard about the USA only applies to a small percentage of the population. Most people are doing fine.
Most people can afford steak, shrimp, lobster and all sorts of other food. Most people have health insurance that works perfectly fine.
You claim you can go fishing everyday and eat well. But what if you didn't live next to a body of water? I can just say "well you only get to eat in your country if you live near water, you have to be lucky geographically"
Of course we can both see how retarded that is, and that is basically everything you said about the USA

It's great here if you've got money and not so much if you're poor. How much it sucks to be poor depends on the state you live in. That's about the long and short of it. We've got some of the best of the best and worst of the worst of the developed countries. If you're not retarded and you're willing to really grind it out for 5-10 years then you can get from the bottom to a position of decent wealth, whether or not a person should have to do that to live with dignity is its own question.

    >>22268232
A significant portion of people here live paycheck to paycheck. Maybe they could afford a steak and lobster dinner once in a blue moon but otherwise they're mounting debt to pretend to afford a lifestyle above their means(this happens often unfortunately).
    >>
    >>22268260
    >It's great here if you've got money and not so much if you're poor
