The anti anime /ctg/ godhead was right. Took apart the kinu and immediately started getting grounds that looked how I expected them to.
Taste is still off but at least I know I'm in the right ballpark.
Thank you, anti anime /ctg/ cult leader. You crazy faggot.
>>
>>22251691
Still gotta work on my technique to prevent the grounds from sticking to the sides but it's literally night and day difference between before taking apart the grinder and after.
>Dose: 30g
>Beans: Passenger Divino Niño
>Dripper: Hario V60
>Grinder: Kinu M47 Phoenix
>Grind: 3.2 rotations from zero
>Water: 500g
>Temperature: 93°C
>Method: James Hoffmann Ultimate V60
>Bloom: 60g for 45 seconds
>First Pour: 300g by 1:15
>Final Pour: 500g
>Drawdown: 3:35–3:45
>Body: Light, somewhat watery
>Flavor: Smooth but muted, lacking sweetness
>Acidity: Very slight sour aftertaste
>Astringency: Slight lingering dryness
>Bitterness: Minimal to none

Thinking of going 3.4 at 92°C for tomorrow. Are those the right variables to tweak given my perceived results?

>>
>>22251765
How many minutes did it take you to disassemble and clean? Under 5?
>>
>>22251770
About 5, yes. After you mentioned >>22250533 I decided to really give it a try. I didn't realize it was a common occurrence and didn't assume you had dealt with a similar issue before.
>>
>>22251778
On top of all of that I also just bought that grinder like a week ago. Surprising that it required being taken apart basically fresh from the manufacturer. Novice mindset, I suppose.
>>
>>22251778
>didn't realize it was a common occurrence and didn't assume you had dealt with a similar issue before
Completely different grinder. He had a Kingrinder K6. I've just been wrangling retards towards better coffee for years.
>>22251791
Burr rides on a spring held by a nut held by a different screw. Bumps happen in shipping, springs do as springs do. If I remember right from my 2019 phoenix, handle comes in the box detached, everything tight. That exact problem can happen when you drop the grinder too.
>>
>>22251691
Wait, what was wrong with the Kinu to warrant disassembly? It wasn't calibrated right or some shit?

Yeah, that's how mine was.
>That exact problem can happen when you drop the grinder too.
I keep mine in the case stored away, pretty anal about its well being.

>>22251836
For whatever reason (probably due to shipping as seen here >>22251798) literally every time I ground anything at a 4.0 the grounds came out with the size and consistency of nerds candy. Brews tasted awful despite "adjusting" the grind. After disassembly/recalibration, grind is significantly finer and the finished product (while not dialed in completely yet) is clearly on the way to tasting gud.

The original ones just came in a cardboard tube. It sounds like you're putting the handle on and taking it off every brew. That's retarded. Leave the handle on, keep the grinder on your counter, use the travel case for traveling.
>>22251836
Now it seems to me like he just fucked up and didn't tighten down the stop all the way.

>>22251963

Correct. Besides being mildly time consuming is there any other downside to this? Unnecessary handling/more potential for misconfigs seem possible but I've always been sure to tighten down the screw holding the handle in place snugly when putting the handle back on.
Either way I'll heed and keep it out. More convenient at the very least.

As a coffeelet who murders 2-3 daily cups of instant powder (Nescafe Gold) with loads of artificial creamer (International delight) and is well satisfied, what painless preparation method might I enjoy to bump up to "real" covfefe? I'm looking for a step up without doing some stupid K-cup crap or ritualistic autism. So far Korean coffee sachets and freeze dried granules dosed with creamer have been sufficient. Do you have a suggestion or do you just want to gatekeep extreme and ridiculous practices forever?

(reposting because neXT loves to rotate my fucking images for no reason)
First brew with the Cafec Abaca+ filters and the taste is much clearer but I don't think I have everything dialed in properly yet. Smooth, medium body but weak overall. I can't tell how much of this is placebo on my end (if any). Using purified drinking water as well, big jugs from Costco.
The drawdown took significantly longer with the Abaca, up from 3:20 to 4:15 this morning. That's after grinding coarser by 0.1 (3.4 to 3.5 today).
So far literally everything anti-anime guy said has improved my brews immensely. I guess a glass stirring stick, melo drip, and origami are next on the list.

Darks need minimal agitation (least dense bean roast type). Only downside is percolation time. And not getting the filtration of kidney stressor compounds pour over filters would catch. And marginal bean efficiency with coarser grind.

It's my favorite way of making coffee, but it can be finicky if you have a bad french press that can't hold the piston up. Brew time is long, you need coarse coffee and it's messy to clean, but it makes very light and soft tasting coffee if you like that

Fast food joints in the US add HFCS on the bread to make it taste sweet, no idea on the why.

I think the general opnion about the US during the world cup is:
>Even with all the wealth in the world to buy their way into hosting an event, Americans cannot help but display all the reasons why they should be despised and pitted.
or
>An event to make Israelis look generous, Gulf Arabs look humble, the German look manly and the Brazilians look White.
>>
>>22254760
This. It especially counts for coffee in recent years.
The general public has gotten used to the taste of soot so much they refuse to associate coffee with any other flavor.
Who knows how long until third wave coffee at least reaches the same level of cult status as craft beer, where people would be genuinely interested to try it out without nonsensical prejudice, let alone make their own high quality coffee cups at home

Thoughts on this grinder?
https://www.baratza.com/en-us/product/virtuosotm-zcg587
I was looking at the customer reviews for the Ode2 and a guy said that this grinder offered basically the same quality for $150 less. Is this true, or is it not that simple?
>>
>>22259196
Its just a fancier Encore.
>Is this true, or is it not that simple?
The 64mm flat burrs in the Ode 2 shit all over the 40mm hand grinder cone burrs in the Virtuoso.
>>
>>22249997
is he remembering how each tastes, or is this all a single batch being tasted for consistency, what is going on here? why would this ever make sense with coffee?

>>
Is it true that the quality ceiling on 20g or less pour over doses is higher than that of 30g?
>>
>>22259196
Both the encore/virtuoso and ode grinders are similar in that they use excellent burrs that are ruined by the grinders total lack of burr alignment and stability. The Eureka Peppe has obsoleted both of them.
>>22259237
>64mm burrs shit all over the cone burrs in the Virtuoso
Some of them maybe.
>in the Ode
Lol no.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5jeyF1u01k

>>22259334
Usually the higher the dose the higher the ceiling.
>>
>>22259451
Again, all Eureka grinders outside the Atom75 are dogshit. And thats only good if you're making traditional 9 bar spro. Not sure why you're so intent on shilling the peppe. Because its in an aluminum housing? Like chinese hand grinders? Shitty burrs are shitty burrs. If you're looking for small brewing flats df54+ditting steels is probably better money spent.
https://www.robertasami.com/burrtopia/54mm-ditting-steel
>I easily prefer this burr to the 98mm stock burr in the EK43. It’s a closer call between this and a conical 48mm heptagonal, I think I’d take this by a narrow margin.
>>22259334
Theres a reason all the new meme brewers use 01/155 filters. Also a reason why they brew a cup for each judge instead of a big carafe to split in the meme brewing competitions.

My assessment from all the information I've seen is that the eureka 50mm brew burrs perform quite well, potentially even equivalently to the ditting steels. The 50mm all purpose and espresso burrs look like they produce the typical eureka mud. The df54+ dittings are $100 more than a peppe+brews (even more if you're in an area that sells the peppe with brews preinstalled) and needs some fiddling with the electricals to reverse the rotation. If you're up for that then that's fine.
>I easily prefer this burr to the 98mm stock burr in the EK43
Robert should probably clear up what burr version he's talking about since EK burrs are all over the map.
>shilling the peppe
Only on posts asking about cheap obsolete electric grinders like the encore/ode/opus. Especially the Ode as that grinder does a particular disservice in its ability to house expensive high performing burr sets while simultaneously ruining the grind quality with its total lack of burr alignment and stability. All the beginners who don't know any better getting turned off of the hobby after spending hundreds on the god forsaken ode+ssp mp combo after getting waxed and waned on the forums about "high clarity" and just ending up with perpetual harshness and astringency.
Also are you wuganon? Are you using lab sweets or special steels?
>>
>>22259852
>the 98mm stock burr in the EK43
Its very obvious, if you know what you're talking about.
https://www.mahlkoenig.us/collections/burrs?filter.p.m.custom.burr_diameter=98+mm
>Are you using lab sweets or special steels?
I'm using "Premium Cast Steel" 807 Lab Sweet burrs. Sourced straight from Zurich right before Hemro shifted production to Germany.

Sworks dripper + Oshi + Sibarist Fast Flat. This shit really really reminds me of panama gesha, but its just not all the there. Its great and yet disappointing. Super light florals, citrus, crisp apple, incredibly clean in spite of it being a red honey. But the lack of density at 1100masl is apparent. Its woody, almost hollow, finishes super dry. Super silky in the mouth though. Worth $132/lb? Probably not. Interesting though.

Get a kleen kanteen TKPro Thermos and anything you put in there will remain hot the entire shift, so the answer there would be "whatever type of coffee you like the most.
If you're okay with cold coffee then you could make cold brew, put however many cups worth of concentrate into the thermos with some ice and then pour it over milk or cold water when you want it later.
