I went on a distillery tour at a local place the other day, and they let me try some of their new make spirit. It was genuinely some of the best grain-based spirit I've ever had, and they don't even sell it.
Why the hell aren't unaged (technically not) whiskeys a thing? Is it really just because of those laws the UK had that mandated minimum aging times that don't even apply to the US? Basically every other type of spirit understands that their stuff can taste fantastic unaged (see: tequila, rum, etc) and whiskey specifically has a bunch of really interesting aspects to it at the front that you just never taste because they're covered up by oak.
I remember wondering this a while ago before I'd even tried it myself and all the answers that I saw online were like "yeah you don't see it because it'd taste awful" and those redditors were absolutely fucking lying.

I used to play this song (the George Thoroughgood cover version) at the bar jukebox and knock back a boilermaker with a shot of the well scotch and bourbon blended and dropped into Miller lite. We called it a Destroyer. The Destroyer Challenge was to have one each time that phrase comes out during the song, which is 7 if I remember correctly.

I had some 100% Corn Whiskey by Rocly Top a while back. It was terrible and basically just moonshine.
    >>
    >>22222204
New make is shit. You mention other spirits but it’s also true there, with the exception of tequila which is the only good unadulterated un-aged spirit (when done well). Gin doesn’t count because it’s adulterated

The thing is, you can probably make new make good but at that point it would be expensive. You’d had to do really narrow cuts at the very heart of the distillate. Which is a waste to use for new make
    >>
    >>22223978
To be fair almost every thing is better with wood. And to be fair white rums, white piscos, and white whiskies are also still good.
I’ve tried both unaged and aged versions from the dame distillery (middle west pumpernickel) and preferred the latter.
It would be nice if white dog were more common but you’re probably right about the cuts being prohibitive. But that doesn’t stop the producers of white rum etc
    >>
    >>22223978
I mean maybe the new make that gets sold is bad, but this stuff was fantastic. It was 100% barley american single malt stuff, if that matters. Also I disagree that tequila is the only one that works, unaged pot still rums and agricoles/cachasa are delicious. Plus I'd kinda argue that the whole reason Pisco is successful as a segment is because they exploited this same blindspot when it was the brandy industry making the same mistake.

My father's had quite a few kinds of scotch in his time, not a snob but not easy to impress either. Got him an Ardbeg 10 year old for his birthday this year, didn't like the look of the label but decided I'm shit at judging by the label so might as well pick one I don't like this time. It's the most he's ever liked a scotch I've bought him, it's his new favourite. I liked it as well, although I'm not really a scotch drinker. I don't think they have An Oa at the LCBO but if I ever see it I'll grab one.

    >>
    >>22239183
first bottle of Arran 10 I got was bottled 2014-2016 and the first few pours were very evocative of a tye die fruit roll up(core childhood memory) with some of that typical bready, malt flavor, a touch of sourness and then barrel char + light vanilla sweetness. very good for the price. I haven't had a modern bottling but people still talk it up so it must be comprable.

official bottlings of Caol Ila arent worth the premium for Diageos branding unless you're Asian. if you have to own one, get an independent bottling. they are quite available and usually cheaper than the standard 12 as well as being presented without chill filtering and artificially colored.

if you have a Total Wine anywhere near you, look for Smokehead and Scarabus brands. both now have age stated and cask strength options and should be able to be sampled if the wagies arent hiding. other brands will outright state its Caol Ila, if it's been finished and all that jazz as well. in the US you should be able to get both A10 and either the Smokehead or Scarabus for around $100 if your state isnt retarded with the alcohol taxes.

Eagle Rare is 10 years aged stated and "only single barrels used". BT is the same mash bill, but no older than 6 years at most in large batches(hundreds of barrels per batch). they share the same proof as well which is purely for muh margins and mass market appeal. Benchmark is BT but younger still and with new varieties.

What's the best bang for buck alcohol to get to get a buzz going? So far I've usually just been buying a 700ml bottle of Johhny walker or Jack daniels or catian Morgan's rum.

What other types of alcohol or ingredients to get to make some mixed drinks? Something more fun or sweet or things like long island iceteas
    >>
    >>22245681
    >How bad can this get
pretty bad. 7 drinks per week is the cutoff for an alcoholic, and 1 per day gets you there
if you do this long term, you will have health problems. imagine every time you have a drink you instead eat a hotdog. is that healthy? do you consider a hotdog less healthy than a drink?
    >>
    >>22245681
    >bang for buck
depends if you are mixing cocktails or drinking everything neat.

    >>22245805
nta but depends on the 'dog
    >>
    >>22245970
Most of the time it's just with cola or some juice. But wouldn't mind experimenting with cocktails
    >>
    >>22246376
personally I'd say you need to pick a lane; either drop the sugar water or switch to clear/unaged spirits because wood phenols + lots of sugar = hangover. the mixing alcohol is cheaper if you buy handles, but is of lower quality. you can stretch a bottle of Everclear or Overproof Rum pretty easy with some slight calculations.

Lately I've been really enjoying Dark Arts "Long Strange Drip" (honey finished). I get lots of dried apricots and absolutely delicious honey with some earthy umami notes as well as bright floral notes. Nutmeg shows up big in the finish along with the honey.

I haven't tried anything else from Dark Arts but this won't be the last. I've been watching for them to release another rye finished in maple syrup and amburana casks ("Ripple Rye") because that one sounds fuckin good. They seem to be one of the best NDPs, especially for finishes.

And here's the link if you want to order a bottle for yourself.

Get on the CS distillery editions or independent bottlings.
Auchroisk, Benrinnes (if heavily sherried), Blair Athol (if heavily sherried), Caol Ila (all forms, but I favor Smokehead High Voltage), Clynelish (must be 50%abv+), Dailuaine (if heavily sherried), Dalwhinnie 15 is good but overpriced for a long time now, Dufftown (CS only), Glendullan (mixed results), Inchgower, Knockando, Linkwood (I have never not loved one), Roseisle (brand new, the released a official CS, get on it while its cheap).

Generally they don't treat their own product well

while I do highly reccomend getting into rum, I don't think you should go into it looking for "sweetness," at least any more so than you would in bourbon. There are a lot of rums which do actually have a non-zero amount of sweetness added to them in the bottling process but with a few exceptions (Planteray rums are good despite doing this as a holdover from congac traditions, Blackstrap rums are a very useful tool for mixing) are generally pretty shit.
My main suggestion is stay away from anything from Venezuela. I'm sure good venezuelan rums exsist, but for whatever reason all the ones that I see sold are oversweetened, overpriced, and range from either mediocre (diplomatico) to dogshit (zacapa.)
No idea why but they're extremely common especially at bars and stores which don't specialize in rum.
Depending on how gnarly you like your stuff, some good entry level rums would be (from gnarly to rather polite tasting)
Smith and Cross or the Worthy Park 109 from >>22260585
El Dorado 5/7y or Appleton Estate 8y (also: Appleton estate signature is insanely good value for mixing and not a bad sipper either)
    Planteray 5y or Doorly's 5y/XO
    >>
    >>22260967
oh also to add to this, if you're a proof hound who isn't looking for the funk of a smith and cross or worthy park 109, Pusser's Gunpowder proof is sort of the canonical high strength rum, although in my opinion planteray's Mr Fogg lines are strict improvements. Additionally, Hamilton and Lemon Hart 151 despite being probably made for mixing are bafflinglingly delicious on their own as long as you take small sips and don't have any open flames nearby, and I say that as someone who is decisively *not* a proof hound myself.

Overholt and Crow were really good historic whiskies when they were made at their on distilleries on McCracken Pike and Broad Ford. It's more historically appropriate to put good liquid in them than not, though of course anything at a price point does actually need to be good. Overholt isn't that bad at $90 for an 11-12 year of it's quality and some kind of special crow chessman at 12 years or whatever would be nice. It would need to taste different from every other Beam product though.

I passed on a Sagamore Rye 10 year store pick that was like $90 after tax, only 55% abv and no special barreling or anything. the $10/year makes sense for scotch from an independent bottler, but is absurd for a domestic product, with less aging and from MGP. if it were $20 cheaper retail it would be worth buying, but November's coming soon and hopefully the sales roll with it. I dont really want to wait another 4-6 months to spend the rest of my drinking money.

the rum i bought was very refreshing so I'm probably gonna get more and maybe an Armagnac/Cognac or some apple brandy(although the season for that seems to be fading fast) and maybe a tequila. scotch is still great and all but my palate is fatigued with it and it just doesnt hit the same anymore. I think maybe I've anesthetized my sense of smell/taste a bit to hard by way of chewing the liquor for too long, too many times.

The Oban had a light fresh pleasant smell, surprisingly burning spicy bite on the tongue, fresh fruity honey/beeswax.

Poured myself a cheeky wee dram of the GlenAllachie here before noon.
On first smell it unlocked some childhood memory of smelling chemicals like acetone or oil based paint in a good way.
I taste the dried fruits and chocolate, and could smell it more after the first sip. Quite lovely.

I'm open to suggestions as I'm looking to venture into peat and smoke.
So far I'm enjoying this more than the wine snobbery as I can actually smell and taste big differences.

Well I love it but I hate the price, the secondary market for this bottle is $150

$150 is too much. The only Stagg I've tried is my bottle of 25A and while it's quite good I'd only pay up to $120 for it. I got mine for $80 and wish I had picked up another.

I fucking love Longrow, but it's inconsistent.
Last bottle I had was super heavy on the tar. I didn't dislike it, just saying.
This bottle isn't, and it's that lemon oil note I adore that dominates.

    I mean, that's a very low bar.

Ralfy will nay say it, but its ok for the price. if you get a decent bottling of Ardmore from an independent bottler(a 10 year ex bourbon from Signatory should be reasonably priced) you can beef the pour of Teacher's up with a small teaspoon of the single malt since the main complaint is that the blend is too bland these days.

I kinda wish I didn’t buy it but the juice is good it has a dark char it’s not quite as hot as some other staggs and it has a strong cherry note.

I like it, this is my first stagg, I’ve tried a a couple staggs and this is the first one I’ve owned so I can really get to know it, so far I would call it typical stagg but that a good thing
