Why are the current crop of cosplayers that attend conventions genuinely fucking insane?
I haven't been in a few years and the people I have been meeting are just absolutely bonkers. Not even close to the kinds of people that were attending conventions 10+ years ago. It's like this new crowd is wearing the skin of my people and anything beyond surface level fandom discussion is like I am talking to an actual alien.
I don't know how they even manage to function with the sheer force of counterintuitive doublethink induced tension going on in their heads.

    I mentioned Girls und Panzer:
    >omg umm lolicons are pedophiles??
I mentioned High School of the Dead:
    >omg she's literally 17 years old and 364 days old you freak
These aren't even old anime, and I have never ever considered them "problematic" (you are a humongous faggot if you use this word, by the way) ((and I'm not even going to mention the amount of inter-group drama and "cancellations" that occur between these people; I recently watched someone get kicked out of a group for "grooming" and it was a 19 year old dating a 17 year old. Actual, genuine psychosis of groupthink where everybody had to pick sides and bullied everyone else into kicking the """pedophile groomer""" out. This is a specific example, but applies in every case where someone fails a vague "vibe check" that gives someone with a loud enough voice and influence carte blanche to freely kick whomever they choose out based on literally nothing; or """vibes""" which is a meaningless nothing word.)
It's not like I'm shouting OOOH I LOVE CUNNY THIS LOLI BRAT NEEDS CORRECTION OOOUGHH but I may as well be doing just that based on the way these, again, utterly insane new generation cosplayers think. They are faggots, and I mean that in the most despicable way possible.

Is it normies? Did normies take over my hobby and are parading its corpse around? These (you?) people are of a completely different mind to the people I befriended years ago. The "moral" panic is truly astounding. WHY DO YOU CLAIM TO LIKE ANIME IF ALL YOU ARE GOING TO DO IS CALL IT PROBLEMATIC AND LOOK AT ME LIKE I'M INSANE WHEN I DON'T ADD A DISCLAIMER TO THE FACT THAT I LIKE KONATA FROM LUCKY STAR
    >omg she's in high school??
IT IS FICTION. IT IS A CARTOON. I AM HERE BECAUSE I LIKE THE FUCKING CARTOON, IT IS NOT A REFLECTION OF MY MORAL CHARACTER IN REAL LIFE TOWARDS REAL PEOPLE. WHY THE FUCK ARE ***YOU*** HERE?
The worst part is, the people I'm describing may very well read this post and think to themselves "yeah I know!" while completely neglecting to reflect on their own behavior (ESPECIALLY WITHIN GROUPS OF PEOPLE) and not realizing they are exactly the type of person I'm talking about.
I WANT MY FUCKING HOBBY BACK.

This is why the people I hang out with and meet at cons I use going to the bar as a filter. Schizo's will flake, poorfags won't go because obvious reasons, people too young to hold a conversation are gatekept, and anyone insane will be easy to get away from.

Normies, 2000% normies. Sometime in 2019/2020 normgroids decided to storm our spaces and its never been the same since.

You worry too much about genuine cattle. You simply have to learn to clock these people, and the more cons you go to the easier it gets. Normies love the big 3 shounen, they love demon slayer and JJK, the insufferable normie women all dress up as Miku or some other surface level shit. This is not a foolproof strategy however, the number of moralfagging insufferable people who cosplay "problematic" media while not knowing is insane. Just because someone is wearing a Saya or Zakuro cosplay, doesn't mean they actually read the vn or know anything about it. There's always gonna be some awkward interactions, simply because of the sheer amount of normies that have infected the fandom, just gotta discard whatever retarded shit they say and move on, you will eventually find people that actually know and care about otaku stuff.

I do this too and smoke cigarettes. I don't even smoke outside of events. Cigs are the ultimate social tool for me. Lets me get out of conversations ("i'm gonna smoke a cig"), wards off weird puritans, starts up conversations with people because I can light someone when I see them with a cig outside. Even that doesn't always work because someone I knew from cons had a freakout after I knew them for a couple years.

lel pretty based and you didn't even factor in the ever-growing contingent of sticks up the ass who don't drink cuz they think they're too good for that

Conventions are flooded with normies nowadays and the only people that know ball have their own group to hang out together, maybe your solution is simply just to find said group

So yeah OP the fix to your problem is piss easy. Executing it, might be less so
    >1): forget media conventions
    >2): look for any cons (or meetups) about a hyper specific fandom you're into
    >3): Done

hate to tell the thread, its not normies doing this. not at all. not even a little bit. Its a function of a failure of normal self-policing of the in-group. Instead, a significant enough clique in the group forms for someone to end up leading and they begin self appointed policing the group, and enough people go along with it out of fear of being on the out group. And this is because of a knee jerk reaction of calling every single check on the group a gakekeeping.

Don't forget cosplaying is always an attention seeking expression(unless you never show anyone the costume), and the threat of being denied attention in this equation will make lots of people do some pretty fucked up things.

this strategy is offloading the gatekeeping to a different social norm outside the group, but does have its problems too.

Maybe you should. Normalfags should know when a group isn't theirs to invade.
