reviving bc the previous thread from a while ago got nuked

what's everyone's thoughts on cosplay photography in 2024/the foreseeable future? it seems like the amount of bullshit we have to put up with as photographers in the cosplay scene only increases day by day and the cons outweigh the pros
    >>
Then stop doing it, it sounds like it's making you unhappy.
    >>
If you don't like cosplay photography then don't do it anymore!
    don't do it anymore!
    don't do it anymore!

Cosplay 'togs usually think they are better than they actually are

    Also are creepazoids

    Yeah, I agree.

good thing I always underestimate myself in everything I do then

even a perceived underestimation of your abilities is actually an overestimation in practice

    >>
Do it for free or don't do it at all. "Professional" photographers are cringe.
    >>
    >>10919924
Does the dopamine hit of ig shootouts when they like it count as "for free"?
    >>
    >>10914831
The only reason guys become cosplay photographers is because they want cosplayer GFs but are too ugly to be cosplayers themselves.
    >>
    >>10920001
    I've been found out

But also I think it's one of the more fun way to pass the time and mingle at a con.
    >>
    >>10914831
Technically, cosplay photography is a dying art with the rise of reels. There's just so many cosplayers who once took high quality photos barely post them anymore because they don't preform well compared to video.
    >>
    >>10920069
thank you short form content for melting people's brains
    >>
It's sad as I've been getting hit with bot accounts pretending to be female cosplayers telling me to follow so many cosplay photographers that paid for followers compared to those that have paid for ads on Instagram
    >>
    >>10914831
    >it seems like the amount of bullshit we have to put up with as photographers in the cosplay scene only increases day by day
Please list some things out. I'm sure you'll come off as a the proto-creepy photographer if you do.
    >>
What's your preferred lens for cons? Nifty 50? 24-70 zooms? 35mm primes?
    >>
    >>10920299
    50mm f/1.2 for solos
    35mm f/2.8 for groups
    >>
Cosplay photography isn't going away. It's just people using cellphones and pro cameras and posting them to social media instead of their own websites.

Cosplay hall photography is a dying art.
    >>
    >>10920327
I am so oppressed for nice lenses as a m4/3 user
    >>
    >>10920344
    >>10920327
as photography guys: if you had a gf and she wanted to get you a lens or other camera gear as a gift, what would really blow your mind?
    >>
    >>10920001
I became a cosplay photographer because I had a cosplay GF, who I met while we were both cosplaying, and I had photography equipment and experience outside the cosplay world. I stopped marketing myself after we broke up and only shoot occasionally on request from friends now because I don't like the experience as a single guy, it's not fun knowing that everybody just assumes I'm some loser trying to get laid.

    >>10920299
Back when I was really active as a cosplay photog my bread and butter were the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8s, since I was also doing real photography work and had the whole pro setup. I've since downsized and my main lenses are 35 and 85 primes. I've always hated 50s, it's an awkward focal length that never seems to be right for what I'm doing and I prefer the noticeable perspective effects of the other lenses.
    >>
    >>10920365
    >Back when I was really active as a cosplay photog my bread and butter were the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8s, since I was also doing real photography work and had the whole pro setup.

Do you think a micro 4/3 with the equivalent (12-35 iirc) lens would do the job for cons? Or does the small sensor and convention center lighting make it more difficult?

    t. thinking about ditching a garage sale K-30 for something a bit smarter and smaller
    >>
    >>10920369
I never did true hall shots (shot at cons plenty but it was always off to the side in a more organized, extended shoot and either in locations with good natural light or with off-camera flashes set up) so I'm not the greatest person to ask but I think it'd be suboptimal. I'll also say that, for what I was doing, I found that a zoom wasn't the best choice, I actually looked at stats of my photos and found that I pretty much never used anything between 35 and 70 on my 24-70 so I switched to faster, sharper primes.
    >>
Pro tip, always look at a “cosplay photographers” instagram. If it is 75% hot women and lots of cleavage/fanservicy photos, they are a creep. That covers a good 99.999% of them. Age, experience, or equipment doesn’t tell the story, it’s what they post to the public that says everything.
    >>
    >>10920477
Stop shooting with male photographers and you never have to worry about things like that again

    >>

    >>10920514
if the female's photographer's insta is 75% hot guys and lots of exposed collar bones/muscles/fanservicy photos, they are a creep.
    >>
    >>10920563
Most female photographers just photograph other naked women
    >>
    >>10920563
Lmao the idea that most male cosplayers aren’t out of shape tubs of lard. Thanks for the kek
    >>
I am new to cosplay photography. How much do you pay to photograph the cosplayers at a convention? Is $50 a good starting point, since that is how much those people in costume charge at Las Vegas or Hollywood, or is that too little since the cosplay at conventions tends to be better quality?
    >>
    >>10920602
$0, or they're paying you for the gig in 99% of cases. Would you pay people to take their picture on Halloween? Fuck no.
    >>
I feel like cosplay photography is a scam for the cosplayers. Think about it. When you work at a company, the company is enriching themselves using your time and skills and you get compensation in return. But for photography, you are paying the photographer for them to enrich themselves by using you as advertisement
    >>
    >>10920615
No. Anyone that's paying you is 100% trying to convert IG clout to money. If you want that, fuck you pay me.

Most of the time photographers and cosplayers do it for the love of the game or as an excuse and icebreaker to socialize.
    >>
    >>10920563
Show me even one coomer female photographer

Lol that’s straight up retarded. You’ve gotta be pretty full of yourself to think you’re in anyway enriching for a photographer. Also you could say that about any artist/craftsperson with a portfolio and I think you would realize how stupid it sounds.
    >you’re paying the seamstress to enrich themselves by using the cosplayer as advertisement
    >you’re paying the wedding photographer to enrich themselves by using the happy couple as advertisement

Patently false, Harvey Weinstein and Terry Richardson immediately come to mind and those are just some famous ones.
    >>
    >>10920814
Yeah the cheaper lens seems like it might be the best option. That or taking them to the Laika store. We've been married for years now, but my spouse is hard to buy gifts for, even though I feel very spoiled.
    >>
    >>10920935
Yeah, I suggest getting their thoughts and watching what they look at. A huge telephoto bazooka is neat, but useless for most types of photography. Macro lenses go the other way. Amazing if you want to shoot insects, but useless for distance. It really comes down to what kind of photography they do.
    >>
cosplay photographers please explain why men ask for pictures of my fatty self for cosplays? it makes me feel happy sure because i try my bestest to look good but WHY. i always forget to ask for them too like what do they even do with them? did someone post me on the internet somewhere or are they doing something worse privately?
    >>
    >>10920991
They mostly shoot either people or landscapes, but they're still kind of trying to figure out their niche since they're new to the hobby. I noticed my spouse has been collecting increasingly large lenses, though. When I showed them the suggestions they kind of liked the smaller one, but also mentioned maybe getting another camera to work with since they only have a 35mm right now (my spouse does film photography exclusively)
    >>
    >>10921005
    Maybe they like your cosplay.
    >>
    >>10920927
Harvey Weinstein and uncle Terry were both me too’d. That’s just further proof they don’t like getting molested
    >>
    >>10921020
They were very happy to get molested, and to let other young girls get molested, and to benefit from being molested, for 30 fucking years .
    >>
    >>10921044
Bud they weren’t happy about it. They were inexperienced models/actresses who were afraid of getting blacklisted if they didn’t roll with it and keep quiet
    >>
Does anyone here use con shoots to fund their weekend? Do you charge a lot and just do a few shoots, so you have more free time for weeb activities? Or do you charge a more moderate amount and make shooting cosplays your main con activity?
    >>
    >>10923512
    I charge $300 per session, and I do 5 a con.

The exclusivity and rarity is why I can get away with it. I could probably charge $500 and still fill up slots.
    >>
    >>10923518
As someone who has never booked anything like this, how does it all go? like whats the process involve from someone reaching out to you, to them getting the pictures?
    >>
    >>10923518
Do you do first come first serve with your slots or do you wait for several people to reach out so you can pick who you want to shoot with?
    >>
    >>10923525
Find someone you want to hire. Message them about availability. The two of you hash things out. Upon the agreed upon date and time, you meet up and take photos. Payment is made either at the beginning of the meet up or at the end of the meet up. Afterwards, according to whatever was agreed upon, photographer sends any edits, additional unedited photos, etc after an agreed upon period of time.
    >>
    >>10923525
    >>10923533
Oh you're the photographer. Uhh same steps but step one is that you have to be good enough to convince someone to want to pay you money. Usually this is done by having a portfolio of work showing off previous results or word of mouth from previous clients to their friends. >>10923518 has to be either really fucking good or there's no one else in his neck of the woods to charge $300.
    >>
I always find it suspicious when photographers that advertise about how they've been shooting the con for years, never post or use any photos from the previous con's paid shoots for their ads! Like can we see some samples from past clients before we hire you?
    >>
    >>10924003
That’s weird. I guess they either suck at photography or got stuck shooting a bunch of uggos that they don’t want in their portfolio. Where are you seeing stuff like that anyway? Do they just have blank social media pages or is this just a discord rando?
    >>
Speedlight? Or not even bother with that shit unless you're getting paid?
    >>
    >>10924309
If you aren’t getting paid, then you should only be shooting in the way that you want to be shooting. If you want to bring it, then bring it. If you find it cumbersome, then leave it behind
    >>
    >>10924110
You see those ads often on the groups for cons in Facebook, like AX, Katsu, Ota, SDCC, NYCC, Dragon, Colossal
    >>
    >>10924110
    >>10923536
At the end of a shoot, who owns the photos/copyright? Do both parties allow themselves to share on social media or does one have exclusivity? Does the cosplayer paying the photog normally also get rights to sell prints/merch from the photos?
    >>
    >>10924766
    >At the end of a shoot, who owns the photos/copyright?
The photographer unless otherwise stated in a contract

    >Do both parties allow themselves to share on social media or does one have exclusivity?
Both have the right to post the images for self-promotion

    >Does the cosplayer paying the photog normally also get rights to sell prints/merch from the photos?
No, that’s typically something that would need to be negotiated separately. Some photographers sell the merchandising rights for a flat fee, while others ask for a percentage of sales
    >>
    >>10925069
damn thats alot worse than I thought, the photographer just holds all your stuff hostage what a horrible deal
    >>
    >>10925097
Welcome to copyright laws in America. Negotiate ahead of time so everyone is on the same page for expectations and you'll avoid conflict later on.
    >>
    >>10925097
How is it being held hostage exactly? You can post the pics freely. The only issue is if you try to profit off of their work. Also maybe a reality check is needed, but 90% of photographers at cons are wayyyy undercharging for the service being provided, so I can absolutely understand them taking issue with selling prints of their work
    >>
    >>10925126
On the other side of the coin, I feel like a lot of photographers will be like "sure, cool" if you got commercial usage rights. I don't think a lot of them know the laws either.
    >>
    >>10920344
    >>10920369
12-35 f2.8 or 25mm f1.7/1.8 or 17mm f1.7/1.8 are all plenty good for casual hall shots. Still good for one on one shoots if you have daylight available.
anything 40 to 100 is good for detailed upper body or head portraits.

Going lo-fi with an old digicam or a point and shoot film camera with built in flash, or even an instax/polaroid is also a nice vibe for hall shots.
The instant photos are especially fun because you can give the person the print immediately as a keepsake.
    >>
    >>10925449
Another thing with m43, is take advantage of the sensor stabilization to use longer exposures without a tripod. I can regularly do half second exposures handheld with sharp results. In a busy con with people walking in the background that can make a cool motion blur effect behind your subject while they pose.
    >>
    >>10920299
    101mm f4.5
    >>
    >>10925449
shit, I was about to scream at the idea of using lenses that wide for people photography and then I realized you were talking about m4/3.

Personally I find that 35+85 equivalents are all I really need, I shoot Fuji now so specifically the 23 1.4 and 56 1.2. As I said in an earlier post I don't really do on the spot hall shooting though, I'll take somebody off to the side and do a mini-shoot.
    >>
    >>10925147

That's personality rights, and if the photographer sells them without the cosplayer's permission, hope they enjoy the lawsuit. Plus side is most competent commercial companies have lawyers that will require paperwork from all parties.
    >>

Cosplay photographers are the worser verison of the bf who takes instagram pictures for his girl or female friend. Even if youre being paid for it, you're still an image slut for them. And then they think just cause they get to do some lewd pics in their hotel room, it's their "in." As someone who is in the industry, do not defend whores. These women are happy to fuck jewish producers to get to the top and contently so. They will stand outside in the cold weather for hours just to get one moment with these guys. That sounds a lot more like willingly throwing their pussies out.

men arent as narcissist as the women so it's to be expected. however, when I want to get a shoot, I usually go and ask someone. The problem however is that a lot of photographers are mostly horny perverts who rather take pictures of women so they don't give you as much effort despite me paying out the ass for a session.
    >>
    >>10932059
I mean it’s been said throughout this thread, but I guess I’ll say it again. HIRE FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHERS. If you’re sick of guys with cameras giving you no effort because you’re also a guy, then hire a girl
    >>
    >>10932065
    >female photographers

They don't have the best cameras like the guys do. No offense.
    >>
    >>10932065
nta but female photogs worth a damn are hen's teeth, especially in the cosplay scene, and the few that exist are booked solid all weekend doing shoots with other girls that want a break from the horny guys with cameras. Most good female photogs won't touch cosplay with a ten foot pole anyway, the combo of being halfway decent and having a vagina basically guarantees nonstop real photography jobs or real models lining up at your door for art shoots so they don't need to slum it with us nerds, and a lot avoid it even when they're into anime/cosplay/etc.

SoCal. There are female photogs around but not many good ones. There aren't many good male ones either obviously, honestly just a handful that I'd want to shoot with, but still more than female ones. I say this as somebody who's a cosplayer and a photographer but not a cosplay photographer btw.
    >>
Know your value, charge photographers for photos. Too many cosplayers are doing it for free and undermining the value of the hobby. Photographer asks for a pic, tell them “$100 for 10 photos” and the quality of the photos will improve. It will also weed out the creeps with cameras since the good photographers will pay. Most photographer are rich anyways.
    >>
    >>10931068
That’s pretty telling about you. I am friends with many male cosplayers and many of them go out of their way to do shoots with me inside of con and out of con.

If you are good, they will seek you out because you have a godly rep.

    >charge photographers for photos.
I know /cgl/ is full of trolls but that's... not how it works.
The photo is owned by the photog unless specifically stated otherwise (usually in writing on a contract release). No one is going to pay for your photo and they are not obligated to pay you either (doesn't mean they can take photos without consent). Even if they did it technically wouldn't be for the photo but you as a "model".

    >>10933565
This may sound like too obvious why not reach out to photography clubs esp if you are at college/university. They likely wouldn't charge and I'm sure there are plenty of starting out photographers that would love a subject/model to practice with. If you take cosplay photography seriously I would seriously considering joining a photography club or taking even a intro class to it.

What’s everyone’s go to con lens?
    >>
    >>10934309
    I like using a 400mm f2.8
    >>
    >>10934309
50mm f1.7 for casual shooting and 24-70mm F2.8 for shooting stages
    >>
    >>10934309
35+85 (or crop sensor equivalent) primes, f/2 or faster. 35 is wide enough to get full body shots without having to back up a million miles, while not being so wide that it makes people look bad, and 85 is the classic for portraits and is also magic for half or full body shots if you've got the space, busy backgrounds are a constant problem at cons and a fast 85 can turn everything behind the subject into cream.

I used to use a 24-70 and 70-200 for cons just because, as a photojournalist in real life, they were what I had, but once I stopped shooting pro I wanted to downsize to a smaller, lighter setup, and I used a tool that analyzes metadata and it showed that the vast majority of my cosplay stuff was shot with the zooms set to either around 35 or around 85, so I switched those primes. (I went from FF Nikon to APS-C Fuji so the lenses specifically are the 23 1.4 and 56 1.2.)

love showing up at cons with gear more than most con photag's net worth and doing sessions for free, where even my fave lens alone is worth more than most's entire setup

its fun setting unfair expectations onto photographers at cons and reminding them they're amateurs. kinda cute when a roastie knows she can spend $500 on photos and still wont get ones as good as she lucked out having me take for free. I make plenty from my actual work, I only take the photos I want to at cons, I dont need some wagie's pittance money nor do I want their 'exposure'

    >>10934476
That was basically me back in the day too, though my main gig was sports so my favorite lens, 500/4, wouldn't have been much good at a con.

I remember one time I was at a smaller con and they'd given an older, somewhat notable and well-equipped but mediocre, photog that I was acquainted with his own room to use as a studio. I was hanging out with his daughter and some other friends there and he left the room for a while, and once he'd been gone for like 20 minutes I noticed that he'd left the modeling lights on his studio strobes on, this was long enough ago that they were still halogens that would burn out eventually and I was familiar with the Profoto strobes he was using so I turned the lights off. Dude eventually came back and flipped the fuck out, trying to swing his dick around about how much his gear cost and insinuating that I'd never even touched gear in that price range before, shut him up pretty quick when I pulled my D3S+24-70 out of my bag and then told him that even if I broke his shit I had a $3m liability policy and full coverage for rental gear etc. though.

I simply enjoy taking pictures of cosplayers at cons. I have slight social phobia so such experience in controlled and friendly environment does help a lot. I like these moments when I politely ask some random cosplayer for posing, show them photos afterwards and they are genuinely happy or even contact me later asking if they can out them on FB/IG/etc. I normally upload to my own private site and give link if they ask for it. Also got "official" accreditation at few cons before so I also enjoyed shooting events or cosplay contests. I honestly think I'm getting better at this. And no, I don't take any money.

Only problem I see is how I'm getting older (34 already) and average age of cosplayers goes down rather than staying constant. I'm afraid I will have to stop doing it soon and, since I have rather low self-esteem, I never actually asked out any cosplayer for a session yet. I would really want to experience this at least once, to be honest.

    >>

    No snapshits or hallshots?
    >>
    >>10934978
No, I only do shoots. I went to school for commercial photography, but ended up working as more of a photojournalist, so hall photos are too close to what my real work was while private shoots are the only time I get to use my lighting and art direction skills so they're what interests me. I also don't shoot much at all these days and don't advertise or solicit shoots, I just do stuff on request from friends or people they refer.

I do feel like I should clarify that I'm not one of those sketchy guys doing lingerie shoots in hotel rooms or anything, I do most of my shooting in public at cons, I just find good spots around the con center areas and take people there to do a 30 minute shoot or whatever.

I'll also add that I don't even do serious editing myself anymore, I do the basic color correction etc. but people generally want much more serious shooping these days and since breaking up with my ex-gf (who, for all her other flaws, was an excellent photo retoucher) I just process my RAWs and then hand the pictures off to the cosplayer, who will have the retouching done however they want, so I don't even have fully edited pictures available to post and the people I work with particularly wouldn't want me posting the unedited versions.
    >>
    >>10934978
NTA, I used to shoot a ton of hallshot snaps and posted here too, at the time it was fun in a Pokemon Snap kind of way. Nowadays I shoot mostly friends and they wouldn't be too impressed at knowing I hang out here. On top of that somehow I've ended up mostly going between con events or social meetups during the day with not much time to wander looking for subjects like I had before. Hallshots are few and far between unless something makes me do a double take and halt in my tracks, when someone has a particularly well constructed costume or a really rare character that I like. I used to always grab hall shots of the FOTM anime, or costumes with tits and asses hanging out but nowadays the FOTM is ridiculous gacha game costumes identically bought from ali express and the exhibitionist cosplayers are either too young looking to risk looking like a predator or too plastic egirl aesthetic for my taste.

Yeah, I've got Japanese cosplayer friends and have shot with a few, and it's wild. These are actual friends who stay at my house when here, or host me when I'm over there, so I've seen them with no makeup at all with with regular everyday makeup, and they're very cute, attractive girls, but come time for a con they do all kinds of crazy shit with makeup, tape, and glue that already makes them look weird and then shop the pics so that they look full-on alien.

I am super new to conventions and cosplaying. Can someone help me understand how people make money off of cosplaying? I am really dumb on the topic and can't wrap my head around it.
How do cosplayers make money off of their cosplays? Is it through advertising themselves online and getting ad revenue from site visits? Is it asking people to pay you money to take pics of you? Do photographers sell their photos? And if so, who pays for them? Maybe the photos are sold to promote the con?
Cosplays are great but I don't see the appeal of wanting to buy a photo of a cosplayer. I guess I just don't understand the economy around it.
    >>
    >>10935587
    either
    - be invited to conventions and have a table to sell prints/selfies
    - get picked up by a company to be an official cosplayer for them at events
    - onlyfans/fan subscription services where people pay you for "cosplay content"
    >>
    >>10935587
    >>10935626
Patreon can be an option too, but you pretty much have to be somebody who makes your own stuff and does it well to be successful there. It's pretty much the only way as a male cosplayer or a girl who doesn't slut it up though - my ex was a very attractive girl but didn't do sexy stuff at all and was instead into armor and big extravagant dresses with lots of embroidery etc., and she made pretty good money with a Patreon that focused as much on cosplay and prop-making content as on wearing it. (She's since started sexing it up more and doing less fancy cosplay-making as her popularity has slipped, though.)

Nobody's gonna care about a boomer like me attending.

I do like to take photos of lolita when there's good light and space to isolate the subject from the background. Otherwise if the background is busy it clashes with all the details in the fabric prints and lace.

I think that If you had a site where you got a whole bunch of different girls to do cosplay porn with a single subscription you could make pretty good money. That's basically what CosplayDeviants is, and they seem to do OK, though they're not a single photog doing it. Cosporn is kinda underserved in North America and if I had the startup money to pay girls I think I could probably do pretty well, I have a bunch of ideas that I think would be successful, but I have zero inclination to be a pornographer.

A simply "Hi, can I take your picture?" is enough 99% of the time. You can add things like saying you like the costume or the character. People like if you can recognize and name who they're wearing.

    Do:
    - Say thank you and smile afterward.
    - Look for cosplayers who are standing around not doing anything, they're probably waiting for someone to ask.
    - Have a few poses ready to suggest in the back of your pocket in case they're new and don't know how to pose.
    - Be mindful of the level of activity around you and them. Having a conversation can be welcome, but if there are a lot of people also taking photos it's best to move on quickly. Watch the foot traffic level in the immediate area and avoid blocking walking paths for more than a few seconds.
    - Look for group public photoshoot meetups on the event's discord or forum. You basically stand in a row with other photogs while the cosplayers take turns posing in the center,

The few don'ts to remember are:
    - Don't approach someone for a photo while they're eating.
    - Don't ask for a photo when they've already taken off their wig or some other major piece of the costume.
    - Don't take it personally if someone says no. They're probably just tired or they have to hurry to reach a scheduled event.
    >>
I still love doing it just it irks me some SEA con photography "culture" increasingly being prevalent at my local cons. Cosplayers coming explicitly to just get a few photos or vids for social media then leaving, and photags with zero spacial awareness trying to camp parts of the con floor with some mid af setup.
