So I have been sitting on cash for a while and finally started learning more about investments.
I have a Fidelity account and was thinking of dumping some money into either their Fidelity 500 Index Fund (FXAIX) or their Fidelity Asset Manager 70% (FASGX)
But after seeing the big blow to the S&P 500 today, and China's stock market apparently seeing something similar days ago, and all the talk of an AI-brought depression incoming, would now be the best time to invest anything? Or should I hold my cash now, wait until mid-depression to buy when its low, for it to eventually rise back up?

Noob retarded here: How difficult is it to gain from a stock drop? If one is seeing a company going down after some news, I would -naively- assume it is safe to buy while it started its downfall (the short shenanigans). Of course, nothing is that easy in the stock market, so I am curious about the why this is not actually that simple/obvious/easy.

"Timing the market" without insider info is literally gambling. You can buy and it will keep falling, making you lose all that money, or you can not buy and then it goes up, which mean you didn't make money.
>>
>>62838179
Putting everything in the market works 2/3 times. If you wanna take it slow I would recommend you pick an % amount and put that into VT once every month. You can look into VOO etc. when you have more confidence in how the market behaves/works.

Dollar cost average in. Buy a set dollar amount at a regular interval over a longer period of time, keep adding whatever you can after that. If there's a big crash, you will get extra stock for cheap. If it keeps going up, you will ride the wave up. The only thing you shouldn't do is get sidelined. Time in the markets beats timing the markets.

Dollar Cost Average. It means buy over time. DCAing really applies to when you're depositing x amount every month or every paycheck and buying whatever stock or index you want to get in a little bit at a time for the rest of your career.
The idea of dollar cost averaging with a lump sum is questionable just because of opportunity cost over the period you would need to DCA for it to make any sense.

there's something about candy cigarettes I really like

maybe it's because it's a thing that's a tiny bit bad for you that you eat that educates you about a thing that's really bad for you.

actually it's just a thing not an idea so it's like a tool for education that costs very little money.

for a thing like that to have value, it would require something extra so that the responsible use of the candy cigarette is guaranteed for the price, the responsible use being education of actual real physical danger.

nobody paid any money for that something extra ever though so I wonder how the candy cigarette worked out as an education tool.

I guess if this is my philosophy: "teaching people stuff is WORTHLESS" it stands to reason my philosophy will never change, which is a life goal of a lot of people

>sell their holdings
>admit its over but will simply hold bags wothout buying more
Grim v_v

Well not like I'm buying more. Ive bought too many times while it dropped to almost no avail ie dumps hard, 1 or 2 day pump, rugpull, repeat pattern get left a bagholder. If it all pumps back up, then my current holdings will earn me back some money but no way am I slurping here. I still stand to make gains if it pumps right back up so why even take the risk of sticking more money in? What if SOXX crashes to $300? Unironically around the price it was earlier this year iirc. SOXL will probably be sub $30 a share despite SOXX not even being close to 2025s bottom

The fact you even think this says a lot. I've already believed for some time now that the reason the fed does the meeting by meeting excuse is solely to prevent stocks from moving in one way or another. And at the same time their action suggests they hate seeimg the stock market values drop despite that not being their priority as can be seen in 2018 where they reversed interest rates soon after the market started dumping hard. Or 2020 iirc.

INTC (no bueno) is going back to 20 dollars

Yeah right now I have just been watching and trying to learn.
>>62838218
This is pretty good advice. The play was to put a lump in initially, then once comfortable, start dedicating a part of my biweekly paycheck to it.
>>62838222
SGOV? Will look into that one, thank you.
And I know today is not the bottom, things will continue to fluctuate and may get worse for a while before it gets better.
>>62838243
Ah okay thank you. Yeah this was my plan. The lump sum was just a starting initial investment to get comfortable with the practice.
>>62838334
Fair enough.
>>62838294
Yeah I am overly cautious and like to know as much as I can before I start doing anything with my money. Glad you are up today though.
>>62838435
Pardon me, still learning.
FXAIX is, from what I understand, Fidelity pretty much mimicking the S&P 500. No transaction fee. 0.015% Exp Ratio (Net)
FASGX is pretty much a managed portfolio that you invest in like a stock. Has the S&P 500, plus Bonds and some international stuff. No transaction fee. 0.63% Exp Ratio (Net)

sgov is just a short term US Bond fund. It pays about 3.6% annual interest, but pays out every month and the dividends are exempt from state income tax because they're the product of US Federal Bonds.

So a thesis is like. Warren Buffet's America is Goated af, never gonna lose with this legal framework.

Okay, so your avg index investment return is 7% rn its 10% but disregard.
So the Fee hits annually.
For every $10,000 you have invested
at the end of the year you should have $10,700 minus the expense ratio. So account will have $10,668.50 in the Low fee Index or $1.50 in fees
$10,578.29 in the "managed" fund or $69.21 in fees. where is the rest you ask? oh you were risk adjusted. so we put only 70% in stonks and 30% in bonds. so 3,000 of your capital was safely earning us a nice arb on your 5.25% bonds.
You could have pushed the buttons yourself but we are happy to take $69 to push the buttons for you Mr Boomer, tell you what, for an extra $0.21 you can even say you've got a stock guy.

If they lose a Texas senate seat of all things, i can see the Republican leadershi deciding to put Trump down before he could do any more damage. It doesn't matter how much super-PAC money he brings in if they're still losing seats in deep-red states. Of course even in a democrat sweep, they'd still need at least ten or so republican defectors to convict, and Trump is destined to try to make the process as ugly as possible, so they're not likely to go for something so direct. I think they could probably impeach Hegseth though.
