chinese RE has been in speculative bubble for a long time. it is not uncommon for people to own multiple apartments, not for cash flow but entirely as investment. there was an enormous build out to feed the demand for this. lots of these properties likely DID NOT cashflow. basically they have over supply form artificial demand and now that bubble has popped.the low cost of RE might sound very nice but a lot of regular chinese people just lost their retirement on this. ive heard different reasons as to why but some of this has to do with the chinese stock market not being a great place to leave your money. the yuan also is kind of a shit tier currency. and its very difficult to do foreign investment as a chinese national living in china. so, RE became their best investment and it boomed, and now busted.
