I want to get a dog. I've never owned a dog before, but after doing a lot of research, I've narrowed it down to a Labrador or a German Shepherd. Which one do you recommend for a first time owner and why?
    >>
    >>5166179
Either one is a great choice. Just make sure you have the time/means to socialize them properly when they're young. A gsd will probably bark a bit more at people/cars on your property.
    >>
    >>5166179
Adding to that, I'm looking for a dog that can relax inside while I work, but also enjoys going for a walk or a run when I get home (I like to run after work). I'd also like a dog that's okay if we can't go out some days, but I'm willing to play with it at home. My house isn't too big either, but I can manage.
    >>
    >>5166179
Lab is your starter dog. Well balanced and good for all dog activities. German shepard is a little advanced. Needs more activity, has more health problems, can be aggressive more often. Could be a hassle if you get a "bad" one
    >>
    >>5166197
The first year and a half can be intense if you aren't on top of training and socialization. The reward for all the hard work is a great adult dog.

Get a greyhound. Since they’re sprinters and not built for endurance, they only need a short walk twice a day and are content to chill on your sofa the rest of the time. But once a week or so you should find a place where they can run full speed off leash. And puppies of any breed are going to be trouble until they’re around 2 years old.
    >>
Get a dog that bonds with you

    >I'd also like a dog that's okay if we can't go out some days, but I'm willing to play with it at home
Don't get a dog then. What do you even mean 'cant go out' yet you can 'play with it at home'. If you have time to play with it you have time to walk it.
If you don't walk your dog for at least an hour a day it's abuse UNLESS you have a huge yard (and then you should still walk it because dogs don't like to shit in their own territory). Don't debate me on this.

Also given your replies and questions you definitely shouldn't get a German Shepherd. You will train it poorly and it will snap some small dog's neck.
    >>
I'd get a gds if their backs weren't so fucked up.

    >I'd get a gds if their backs weren't so fucked up
    What do you mean?
    >>

    >My house isn't too big either, but I can manage.
Don't get a dog, asshole. You'll be one of those cocksuckers with a miserable dog that everyone looks at you and judges you for. Get a cat. Your childish fear of being alone doesn't mean a dog should suffer. Fuck you. Fuck everyone like you.
    >>
    >>5166610
That's the cool part of getting a pet, you bond with it.
    >>
    >>5168110
    I meant gsd. German Shepherd.
Most purebreds have heavily sloped backs that look awful.

Dogs in nature sleep in a hole or on a spot on the ground for 10 hours and then run around a bunch
    >>
    >>5168292
Exactly, they're not holed up in a small apartment all day waiting for their boss to come home who then refuses to walk them but is willing to play (read: watch Netflix whilst throwing a ball). Thanks for agreeing to the "don't get a dog" conclusion
    >>
    >>5168282
Working line GSDs have straight backs.
    >>
    >>5168111
Ah right so now, just like having children, having an animal companion is now only reserved for those wealthy enough to afford a big house with a backyard.

Kys retard. My dog lives in a 2 bedroom apartment with my wife and I and probably has a better life than any animal you've ever owned.
    >>
    >>5166179
I like smart dogs from working lines but they have a lot of energy and require a lot more work. Labradors have been bred just to be retarded companions and it shows.

    >>5168296
As opposed to a dog that is left in a backyard all day while his owner is at work? There's barely any meaningful difference. It's about how much time you spend with them, not how much space they have. Dogs just want to be with their owner.

Whippet or greyhound, maybe a lurcher if they're on the lazy side.

Don't get a lab or germ.
    >>
    >>5166196
The breeds you mentioned need a yard and daily exercise otherwise they'll go insane. If you want an indoors dog get a small lap breed or don't get a dog

50lb cattle dog. Goes out multiple times every day, hikes and walks on the beach most days of the week. If we're feeling lazy after work I just take him to the dog park and let him run wild with all his friends while I just chill and sip a cold drink. Only time he's on leash is if we're walking on the street.

Living the good life. I hope you're all very happy.

Thanks bro, I love my dog. I just don't like it when people say dogs can't live in small spaces. Guess what, humans don't like to live in small houses or apartments either but that's the way the world goes and at the end of the day being with people who love you is a lot more important than the size of the house you own.
    >>
    >>5166179
    I have had both.
    Labradors:
    Silly
    Goofy
    Happy go lucky
    Will always make you laugh
    Obedient
    Food obsessed
Will eat anything depending on the dog you get. My good boy only eats sticks. Never seen him eat trash, footwear, toys, or stuffing, not even toilet paper. I think I lucked out.
    Will eat poop
    Everyone’s my best friend
    Sheds too much
Will alert you at suspicious people but won’t attack
    Very quiet breed
    Can get resource guardy
Clingy and severe separation anxiety. Luckily you can easily train it outta them
Velcro dog. Will sleep on you and sit on you whenever possible and will whine about it if you reject them
Sociable. Good with children and other dogs, even cats. Good with people. You will ask yourself: why is my dog more excited over seeing an acquaintance than he is of me getting home from work?
High prey drive. Will chase squirrels and birds.
Loves to swim. I love watching them swim. They’re in their element. That said, they will lie in muddy puddles and jump in any body of water.
Pulls on lead. Will rip your arm off.
They’re energetic and it’s hard to control them when they’re aroused and excited.
Plays rough. Will cannonball themselves into peoples kneecaps, trip you and others, boop people on their nose and break their nose. They don’t understand their tard strength.
100% very good recall because they’re Velcro dogs and don’t like straying far from you.
Amazing off leash, terrible on leash.
They’ll listen to you 100% of the time as long as you have food.
Bad skin, stomach and ear infections if you get a choco lab

    (Cont’d)
Labradors are highly adaptable and I have had one grown up in an apartment. They’re smart too. I trained him to potty in one spot and he got the memo in 2 days.

    GSD:
Higher maintenance if you get long haired. Shed a lot and more noticeable than a lab due to the contrast (black and blond hairs). Can get stinky quick bc of their thick coats. If you don’t brush their teeth, breath smells like death. Less infections but they get them still. Higher risk of bloat. Hip dysplasia in both breeds but the GSD is at higher risk due to being heavier and taller.
Extremely loyal to one owner only and protective of their families. Way better guard dog than a lab who would happily invite a burglar into your home provided they have a steak to bribe them with.
Depending on dog, they’re mostly play oriented which is difficult to train compared to food motivated lab.
Extremely intelligent and they will outsmart you and know how to push your buttons. Labs try to please you and aren’t as judgemental or manipulative as a GSD. My GSD herded my lab for going off the property when no one trained him to do that. That is how smart and intuitive they are with their owners. He also told off my lab for playing with a decorative piece of furniture. Labs are super playful and will make a toy outta anything, trash or decor, and GSDs are super work focused and will create a job when you don’t train them for one.
GSDs are so fucking loud. That’s why I won’t get another one. Constant barking in your ear when you’re in the car and they’re guarding you. Constant barking at the window when some passerby goes for a walk. They are on alert 24:7 and WILL wake you up in the middle of the night if they hear an owl hoot outside.

At the end of the day: do you want a guard dog or family dog? Guard dog: GSD. Family dog that doesn’t protect you: labbydoors.
    >>
Like a lot of others mentioned, if you are not going to be able to give it at least 20-30min a day where they can be outside, sniffing things (mental stimulation is very important), neither of those breeds is a good fit. A small (under 20lbs) will need less of that and it's easier to play/give them mental stimulation indoors without knocking over lamps and stuff.

Go to you local rescue, tell them your circumstances, and I can guarantee within 5 minutes they will have a dog in front of you that will live a happy life with the kind of life you can give it.

    >Can get resource guardy
Is that right? I thought gun dogs were pretty willing to give things up. That's what they were bred for (retrieving) after all?

My lab got resource guardy with me because he knows I hand out food. He’ll come in between me and any dog at the dog park, but doesn’t growl or bite, just forces his body between me and the other dog to create space. He also does that to me whenever I hug humans.
The one time he started growling was when my GSD was all up in my face while peeling turkey, because they were both competing for a high value reward.
But yes, typically gun dogs are okay when things are taken away from them. But I wouldn’t do the training method where you play with their food and taunt them in front of their face, that creates real problems. Some guy told me that’s what he does with his golden as a puppy, stealing his food, growling at him, etc. and the puppy (now a full grown dog) has a resource guarding complex with food.

Why is it that animal shelters only have pit bull mixes?
    >>
    >>5168936
The question is, why do so many people get pitbulls and breed them or abandon them later?
    >>
I really want a Great Dane so bad but I'm in a small 2 bedroom apartment and probably don't have enough space :(

I hate that I'll likely never be able to afford a house
    >>
    >>5168356
Keep telling yourself that. Also your wife should leave you if you only manage to provide a 2 bedroom apartment at this stage of your life.
    >>
    >>5169134
Aren't Great Danes couch potatos? They are the only giant breed that can do with limited space, I think.

pitmix nibbled on babby so now it gets to live on the farm (kill shelter)
    >>
    >>5166179
don't. You don't give a shit about animals. Unless you adopt a random mutt from a shelter and treat it like a god for 20 years, don't be a pet owner. you'll probably end up abandoning the dog you retard
    >>
    >>5169485
ngl a ~1-3 year old generic brown shelter mutt is like a cheat code to dogs. past the puppy pissing-everywhere stage, the bratty teenage months, the fear/flight stages. just ready to hang out, learn tricks and walk with you. if all you have is pit bulls then drive to a suburb or rural shelter
    >>
    >>5169505
What happens at 1-3 years of age?
    >>
    >>5169545
nothing special, they're just out of their most pain in ass ages and won't hit you with surprises as they hit maturity. but still young enough that you'll have a healthy young dog for a long time. older dogs are even easier but most people overlook seniors
    >>
    >>5169600
I guess it's because people prefer to raise a dog themselves.
    >>
    >>5169700
i reared one puppy and wouldn't again. tons of work and waiting around for what felt like a big gamble. socialization window closes before puppy shots are done. couldn't do fun active shit until her growth plates closed around 18 mos. easy to fuck up during the fear/flight stages and some breeds are prone to aggression when they hit maturity

my current dog came home ~1.5 years we got straight into training, backpacking & trail riding. already housebroke. no surprises, wysiwyg
    >>
    >>5166179
    Neither
    Get a golden
Only drawback is that They get overweight easily and never stop eating (easily remediable)

Lab would be a better first dog, but there are two types of labs - the show type ones (English Labs) which are generally very chill and lazy dogs, and the working dogs (American Labs) which are more energetic and want to jump into every river they see and shake, and roll in horse dung.
Both are prone to arthritis though
