Why have I seen many fat cats but I've never once seen a fat dog? I know fat dogs exist but I've never seen one, ever.
>>
>>5165563
cat owners are retarded.
>>
>>5165563
Making cats fat is good for the environment. They can't catch the birds that way.

Making dogs fat is bad for the environment. Fat dogs take giant mushy shits that are impossible to clean up. Skinny dogs shit bricks that leave negligible residue and are easy to throw far enough to land them on rooftops and apartment balconies (just use a plastic bag for sanitation and get a handful of dirt in it or something so no one asks why you have an empty dog shit bag)
>>
>>5165581
No, i looked it up and it's simply physiological. While most American pets are as fat as most Americans (about 2/3 of cats and over half of all dogs), cats have that primordial pouch that stores their chunkage while dogs generally spread their fat around the body roughly evenly so they won't look as fat as a cat might. Furthermore, people tend to post pics and videos of their heckin' chonkerino cats while exceptionally obese dogs are rarely seen in public (can't walk) and rarely videod or photographed not to mention that cats can live as obese animals while dogs tend to die of their obesity at higher rates.
So there you have it. It's not that cats are uniquely more likely to be obese or that cat owners are retarded, it's just that they can carry it while dogs cannot.
>>5165583
My dog was cat-like in that she buried her poos. She didn't just kick dirt over it with her hind legs like a dog typically does. She actively used her front paws to dig a mound of dirt onto her poo. She was thin. People sometimes commented that she looked sickly but I was assured that she was the perfect weight

my 14 years old male cat has been exclusively eating premium brand wet canned food. (RAWZ).
in all his life, he only went to the vet once to get snipped.
i recently went to the vet to finally get check up.
he's healthy. zero stone in his kidney.
feed your cats wet food, people.
my cat is very slim. he's still so strong.
the vet was trying to scold me because i never got my cat any vaccines or regular check-ups but then when i told him i feed him that wet food, he was visibly like 'oh..'.
>>
>>5165781

Brother's stupid cat just went through the trash and swallowed a large piece of steak bone.

When I was a kid my parents had a couple they were friends with, an they had a grotesquely obese wiener dog.
When he wanted a belly rub he just lifted his legs like landing gear and would blob over onto his back.
I've also seen plenty of fat labs. My grandparents had a chocolate lab called Bear who was just a big fat lump of shit who would eat anything.
>>
>>5166048
Parts of my welcome home ritual with my cat is petting him, and he immediately falls onto his side and shows his tummy, as cats do, but having had cats I know this isn't an invitation, except with my cat, he grabs my hand in his paws and puts it against his upper chest so I can scruff his fur, which then has him try to put my hand on top of his head, and then back on the best, until he gets excited and tries to bunny kick my hand, I ball up my fist (which is right under his chin) and his bunny kicks make me "punch" him in the jaw.

schizo aside how do you deal with the litterbox and random litter that the cat carries around after they finish shitting?
Going from a cat that shit outside and by the time he got back all the dirt was left outside to finding random grains of sand everywhere in an apartment has been a rather annoying change.
>>
>>5166805
I keep the litter tray in the bathroom, have a large mat under it and try to hoover once a day.

This seems to be the best solution I could manage and has cut down on ~90% of sand
>>
>>5166808
Did that. It almost feels like the little bastard is actively trying to move the dirt everywhere as protest for no longer being outside.
Currently it has mat inside the bathroom and right outside the door of it. Somehow it still ends everywhere. Short hair cat too.

saw a missing cat posted to pawboost nearby. went out at 3am and ended up finding a cat that looked awfully similar but the poor picture quality didn't give me the best hope it was her.

That's rough.
My old cat would always wedge himself in the small of my back at night, and the first thing I would do when I woke up was reach back and pet him while I was waking up.
After he died for the next few months I'd reach back on instinct and then get really depressed when I realized he wasn't there.
I tend to toss and turn a lot at night, but he figured out that if he wedged himself there I would stay in one spot.
I've also got a bad back, so it was like having a living breathing fuzzy squishy purring hot water bottle.

Recently got a kitten after a few months of mourning for my wife's 26 year old childhood cat passed that back in late Spring/early Summer. I didn't grow up with cats myself so it's a new experience for sure, didn't realize how fast cats grow for example since the five month old kitten is now around the size the 26 year old cat was. She's a pretty good cat, bit of a weirdo though since she really really likes to suck on blankets.

It was a young feral, possibly female would not get close. It was way too timid. I spent about 40 minutes sitting on the ground and she only got close enough for a picture for food and that was about 7 feet away. She was a beautiful tuxedo girl with pretty green eyes and a black spot on her pink nose.

I saw some humane traps in the area, I'm under the impression someone is looking out for them. In hindsight I want to avoid hindering their efforts by feeding (not something I planned on doing), just could not conclusively say it wasn't the cat I was looking for.

The original cat has been missing for about 6 months, quite a long time for an area that gets a decent amount of fox activity. Such a shame she hasn't turned up for them.

turns out she didnt go for the chicken. Put it in the wet food bowl and if she did end up eating any of it overnight it was so little that I cant tell if she did at all, but she was avoiding it in the bowl from what I could see so probably not.
Not super surprising, she's pretty congested so her sense of smell is probably dogshit. Didn't go for the churu either for what I assume is the same reason - weird form factor in a tube with little indication smell-wise that it's food, I wouldnt go for it either.
Vet tomorrow, which is going to be an ordeal since I'm pretty much hoping for a walk-in at a shelter clinic, so I may be there for a while waiting.
The alternative is our usual vet which I would prefer not to do since they're 1) pretty fucking expensive just in general, and 2) more of a dog place and will straight up refuse to see cats that are being uncooperative, which is MOST cats when they're at a vet. Past that is a few animal hospitals, which are the worst case since the closest one is a really great place if you're trying to kill your animal but not good for much else, and the other is almost certainly going to be a 2-3k bill.
Pic related, breakfast surveillance footage. she is CRAZY small, smaller than the 6 month old kittens that were also in her colony (not hers, from what I can tell she has never carried a litter to term, or otherwise may just be infertile.)

The poor fuckers that get double copies of this gene have NO satiety signals going to their brains, so they are literally insatiable - hungry all of the time, and it never ever goes away, like some kind of fucking gypsy curse.

are they screaming and having fur flying around, or are they generally quiet unless someone "taps out" with a meow? because the first one is an actual fight, but the second is just them sparring.
Cats play to practice hunting, and they hunt via grappling. Their skin and fur is also structurally different to ours, so a bite/rabbit kick combo that would rip our arms to shreds will skate off them with negligible damage.

Vet went well, clinic was a no-go because they were solid-booked until mid-november but my local vet had an appointment this afternoon. Miraculously she was SUPER well behaved at the vet, didnt even so much as meow in protest as they did their pokes and prods.
Rabies Vax in, FIV/FeLV negative though they might want to retest if the RI doesnt improve, ear mites but apparently the capstar killed the ones they found, which I did not know was a thing but fuck it, Ill take the bonus. Other parasite tests pending but two others from that colony had coccidia and one had tapeworms so I wouldnt be surprised if she's got something or another. We live on the fifth floor and there is a neighbour's cat who started to visit us almost daily. First time I was shocked to see a cat outside our windows. I managed to find her owners pretty quickly and they got her back. Now she comes to our balcony sometime during the day and loudly meows to get our attention. She's super friendly and just rubs all over you. Is she just a very social cat? I'm worried that she might fall off.
>>

It wasn't an issue with my cat, but if your cat refuse to drink, then you should stop using the additive.

Funny, I also had what I think is a neighbour's cat randomly show up on my balcony on the third floor last week. Little guy was just meowing at my door despite me not even being near, and when I opened it he seemed unsure what to do. Even tried giving him food but he didn't touch any of it and left. Might've been a stray too but I found it strange it would climb all the way to my floor if that's the case.

I have had my cat for 10 days now. Best impulse decision ever. Thank you PetSmart(TM)
>>
>>5169650
A cat that knows you recognizes you addressing it regardless of the way you do it, and anyway, its a lot easier to get them to pay attention to small noises like `tongue-clicks` or `pspspsps`, or tone (a smart cat perfectly understands `noooooo`, he just never really integrates it), than its name. Eventually, every owner baby-talks their pet`s name a bit, and the cat probably owns in more on that tone than the name proper.
Cats are also very 'auditory alert', they seem to be able to remain conscious of surrounding noises through a much larger part of their sleep cycle than us, for example, and so very often when a cat seems to ignore you, I don`t think it really is, it just doesn`t have the same inborn reflex to look at everything its paying attention to the same way we do.

I'm really worried for my senior Persian, she's 15 and yesterday night we thought we had lost her, she suddenly collapsed and was motionless for several minutes, still breathing. When she got up again she looked very confused, looking around not knowing where to go, and after a bit we put her on the sink and opened the tap to let her drink (she really likes staying there and begging for some tap water, she does drink from her bowl but still prefers the tap). After that we went to sleep, fearing to find her gone by the morning, instead we found her just normal, as if nothing ever happened. We decided against bringing her to the vet as it's over 30m by car and we don't want to stress her too much, but I wonder if it was the right choice.
Any idea what could've happened and what can we do to prevent it from happening again? I suspect it's her kidneys, as for the past few appointments the vet has been saying they aren't the healthiest and about a year ago she nearly died from a kidney stone.
Also on a side note, lately she's been constantly sneezing, pretty much with every breath she takes. Vet had no idea what it could actually be, but recommended a medicine we could give her, some powder I think but I can't remember the name, anybody knows what it could have been?
Pic related is her a few months ago, in February. Really want to brush her fur, she has some big tangles, but she's really against it and again, don't want to stress her too much

Why are cat owners so retarded. Every cat owner I know is always insisting that cats need to be allowed to roam outside. Then every couple months they call me in a bawling panic because they can't find it or they found it's dead body on the street. One friend has had almost 30 cats in 10 years because they keep letting them roam outside and they kept disappearing. Another nearly lost their fucking house because their cat attacked a fucking kid in a stroller and they got sued because we have a leash law and the cat was put down. Week ffucking later they call me because they let the new car outside & can't find it. Like Jesus fucking Christ people keep your cat fucking inside

Sometimes I like to lightly bite my kot. Especially when I'm feeling her meaty legs, when I see her muscles bulge, or feel the give of her neck in my hands. I play my tongue over the sharpness of her nails, I feel the texture of her fur on my lips, I taste the almost fish like scent she's bathed in, I leave my saliva on her face, and I go in for a big soft chomp of her neck or legs. One day very very far away from now, when she has passed I actually do want to swallow a chunk. Is this wrong?

As a cat disliker who cats inexplicably like, the attraction and aversion turns out to be quite 'splicable, actually: cats are generally more comfortable with people who don't actively and aggressively seek their attention. I don't like cats so I don't seek their attention and, as such, they actively seek mine, even ones that supposedly hate other people.
Women, on the other hand, fucking love cats and seek them out all the time. Your cat already has that general feline aversion to being targeted for unwanted attention but seemingly has it turned up to 11. That's why he hates women and likes men.
Makes sense?

For breakfast he would have warm weet-bix (Australian breakfast cereal) and milk. He would often get morning and afternoon tea too, which would usually be a shortbread biscuit. I think she's legit just old kitty dying, gf (and technical owner) hopes a change of litter will motivate her to cease this behavior.

>>

sounds like she may be having trouble getting into the box, which makes sense given the age. Had a similar issue with my old girl towards the end, fortunately there's a fix you can do in an evening.
>get a medium to large sized tote, pic related is like 10 bucks at your home improvement big box store of choice.
>Cut a rectangle out of the side leaving about 2-3 inches from the bottom
>fill with litter
Congratulations, you now have a dirt-cheap litter box with low entry she can just walk into and out of. I ended up making two more just because a comparably sized litter box is like three times the price. Nice high walls, too, which is good because my cats dig like a motherfucker.
>>
>>5171295
Oh, I actually already did that like two or three weeks ago!

It worked great, until she decided to instead continue to piss on the puppy pads. Gf brought home corn based and paper based litters, so elder cat is confined to the bathroom while we test those for a few days.
IDK how she'll get to work, but that's her problem.
Sounds like she is just having trouble getting into her box, or her bladder control is weak. Both make sense given her age. The suggestion that anon gave abiut the modified box for her is a good one, but mostly she is just old man. I am sure she has given you lovely companionship for many years so far, so you might just need to put up with her accidents for a little while until she passes on.

GF brought home some corn litter and some paper litter (kinda looks like small animal bedding?). We tried the corn litter first. It seems to work, but I either need to make walls for the box in the bathroom or buy another tote box that fits between the toilet and the sink. I'll probably not do either until the middle of Nov as I am moving across country with these varmints (pissing issues occurred before the move was even known).

As we are eating dinner she has supervised outside time and went from playing in the kitchen to seeking out that litter box specifically (there is a closer one in the living room that we filled with the same litter) and *she fucking squatted to not splash over!*

idk if anybody cares but i have nobody to talk to and i'm devastated, she's been getting worse since this post, she went down from 2.3kg to 1.6, barely manages to eat or drink so we brought her to an emergency vet. we got told her kidneys have deteriorated too much and chances are she won't survive the night, and that their recommendation was to make her sleep there, but we just couldn't, i don't know if it's selfish but she's still part of the family and like a sister to me and a daughter to my parents, it wouldn't be right for it to happen anywhere but home. i'm praying for a miracle, but they never come, do they?
i'm not ready to say goodbye

You're never going to be ready, anon, I've been there. All you can do is make her as comfortable as you can, let her know you love her, and let her go.

How important is it to adopt 2 kittens at once? I know it helps with their playtime. We do have a year old puppy whether that helps or not

There's a lot of things that you, as a human, can't do for your cats.

Had to bring her back to the shelter and in really fucking sad. She is such a sweetheart. I really miss her but I know it's for the best. Having trouble even looking at photos I took of her.

My cat started missing the litter constantly and likewise I surrounded it with puppy pads, I tried changing the litter box to a bigger one and one with walls, and I couldn't understand why she wouldn't do it, this lasted about a year before I took her to the vet.
Arthritis was suggested but she also had early stage kidney disease. Changing her diet accordingly improved her litter habits, only for an inoperable tumour on her tongue to end her life prematurely at 17.

The howling can be a sign of brain damage from a stroke or dementia.
