    I'm going to post a platypus every day until all of /an/ wants to snuggle a puggle

    Previous thread >>5118115 hit image limit and before anyone says it yes the males (and only the males) venomous (mostly seasonally).

    I have also been thinking if the daily reminder to want a platypus is too nebulous. It seems to confuse some anons. I didn't want to completely steal Sakurafish's every day until you like it, but After her ban I wanted to do something similar. Mayby a reminder every day to platonically love platypuses, but then 4chan being 4chan some will take that the wrong way. But I am open to suggestions.

    Funny, I found out about Phineas and Ferb from searching for platypus documentaries. I'm glad it brightened your day and flattered it made you think of this. Now that you reminded me I set a calendar reminder to post something Perry March 6 next year because the first Saturday of March is platypus day :)

    Only the males have them and the one place that lets you play with them only brings out females. That being said male platypuses like to play tug of war like dogs. David Fleay was notorious for playing with the male named Jack that he raised who loved playing tug so much he could be lifted out of the water entirely with him clamped onto a dish mop.

    I love platypi.
    ..but I can never get over the fact that they're mammals who lay eggs and garter snakes are still reptiles who give birth to live young..

    "Our meddling intellect
    Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:—
    We murder to dissect.
    Enough of science and of art;
    Close up these barren leaves."

    just appreciate the platy, anon, and everything else if you can

    Some sharks give live birth as well. Although a fertilized egg is also alive. The whole naming convention for reproduction can be a little all over the place. Think of it this way. Monotremes diverged from reptiles before marsupials and part of why platypuses survived was because marsupials basically cannot be semi aquatic or their young would drown in their mothers pouch while she was foraging. For their specific environment laying eggs and nursing young was an evolutionary advantage.

    Because it's honestly not really a mammal. It's a relic of obsolete Linnaean classification that categorized animals based on perceived similarities (which to be fair that's all they had to go on since they didn't exactly have DNA testing or as good a fossil record as we do). They found this animal that really didn't fit into their pre-existing classification scheme and so just had to awkwardly cram it into whatever was closest to it. Had the Platypus (and Echidna) gone extinct the day before the first europeans arrived and they were only known through fossils, they would 100% be classified as a group of Non-Mammalian Cynodonts (albeit closely related). There would be factoids and listicles like "Did you know that this group of ancient mammal relatives survived in Australia until the modern era?". And of course this has had knock on effects, because since we classify Monotremes as true mammals, that's effected how we classify a lot of mesozoic animals in the Mammal and Mammal adjacent lineages.

    I've been doing this since around 2014 I think. I started the first daily platypus thread the day after mods banned Sakurafish on /a/, but looking up what day that was exactly is kinda hard now.
