This thread is dedicated to all animals of the Reptilia and Amphibia classes. Topics include, but are not limited to: geckos, snakes of all kinds, frogs, salamanders, newts, turtles, tortoises, and much more. Before asking a question, do a search on the internet to see if it has been answered
Classifieds for finding breeders and products:
    >morphmarket.com
    >kingsnake.com
    >faunaclassifieds.com
    >caudata.org
Most forums will have a "for sale" section on them, so look for that, especially if you have a specific herp you want. Craigslist can also be a good source for cheap aquariums, and make sure to check for any reptile expos that occur in your area.

When asking a question, make sure to include these details:
    >Type and size of animal
    >Enclosure dimensions
    >Humidity and temperature
    >Type of substrate
    >The decor you use
    >How often you feed
    >The type of food you use
    >If your animal is wild caught or captive bred
    >How often you handle
    >Who you bought the animal from

most of them are boring noodles imo so i'd go with something an unusual feature like a hognose or even better, a rhino rat since 1) mysterious face horn 2) you get to have a paludarium 3) striking green color 4) not too big, not too small

They're iffy to keep because they make DMT and are also super poisonous to everything.
Legally, you need a fishing license to collect anything from the wild that's not an insect. And don't post online about it or tell people because you might still get FWC pounding on your door trying to say you're making drugs with em.
Of course you also have to deal with parasites and other wild caught issues and a vet might not be happy with you having a Sonoran desert toad.

Can someone explain milksnake taxonomy to me, so im looking at milk snakes specifically hondurans.
    >wikipedia lists honduran as Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis >guatemalan as Lampropeltis abnorma >lne reptile seller near me has one for sale listed as Lampropeltis abnorma hondurensis
so what does that mean? I keep finding conflicting info and chatgpt is saying that all central american milk snakes are nowadays abnormas and then what used to be honduran is just a locality so idk what to trust

Either way it gives me the impression that the guy has no idea what he's talking about, which is never a good sign for a breeder

I did some further research and found that there was a coalescent species delimitation study published by Ruane et al. in 2014 that largely revised all milksnake taxonomy. Among others the honduran milksnake in now considered to be Lampropeltis abnorma. And for example sinaloan and campbells milksnakes are considered the same species L. polyzona. Just seems the pet trade hasnt really caught on

And if i had to guess id say that 80% of captive milksnakes are mutts and the breeders dont even know what they are breeding

Buy a captive bred American toad. They are common as dirt (and so cheap) and won’t get the DEA all hot and bothered, but still make great and charismatic pets.

The odds of someone trying to ruin your life over a single Colorado River toad are low, but not zero. Whether or not that risk is worth it to you is a personal call.

I often hear that turtles and tortoises are tough, but in what way? Because of their shells? Aren't shells... You know, not all that good at healing from damage and preventing damage in the first place?
    >>
    >>5165866
Hardy creatures that wont go down easily to infections, diseases, or wounds. They could be covered in parasites, chewed up, lose a limb or two and just be fine if they live an attack in the wild. But of course if damage or infections is too substantial or if their immune system is weakened they'll eventually succumb to it. Craziest thing I saw was a snapping turtle with the whole bottom of it's jaw torn off but seemingly healed up over time.

Anyone got some good eastern box turtle info? Im doing my research currently, but would be greatly appreciative if anyone has some good sources on these guys

So long story short, ive found a box turtle outside, and I am planning on taking it in. Long story is, I saw a box turtle yesterday, and normally I just appreciate the site and let the go on their way. However this one just stayed in the same spot for around 8 hrs, being shelled up and not moving. It was overcast, so not sure if he was basking or not, but it seemed stressed. Last night, I moved it under our covered porch to a quiet dry area, before the rain came through. I also gave it some veggies from my garden, but it hasnt ate much if at all. I did a better inspection this morning, and it looks like the turtle lost a back leg a while ago. Given the condition, and my area is starting to cool down, I was going to try and take the little fella in. If this is normal box turtle behavior, I will just let it go on its way, but if not then I am happy to help it out. Given it only has 3 legs, and the cold is coming, the turtles chances are getting slim. Thanks for reading my blog, and pic related but not the turtle i found

    >>
    >>5168176
literally any, they're all the exact same ultrasonic horn as a standard "cool air" humidifier, possibly even down to the manufacturer and model number.
Get one that's in your pricepoint with a decent sized reservoir, and actually follow the directions for use (use purified and/or distilled water, dont crank it on full blast and just turn it to where you can only just see the mist trickling, clean and sanitize once a month), and you'll be fine.
    >>
    >>5168193
    >>5168176
Not kidding, by the way. apart from the flex tubing and maybe some additional timer programming on the fancier one, these are effectively the exact same device.
    >>
    >>5168204
oh yeah, also dont use the flex tubing if you can get away with it, get similarly size vinyl tubing instead. The ribbing on the cables just traps water.
    >>
When building a dubia roach enclosure, I'm tempted to forsake all advice and try for a naturalistic enclosure instead of an egg carton hell farm.
    >>
    >>5168424
fuck it, go for it. your output wont be crazy high since you wont have as much surface area, but it would be a pretty nice looking tropical jungle floor terrarium
    >>
    >>5168424
Dubias are nice, they deserve the best desu
    >>
    >>5168424
Unless you have a bajillion insect eaters or like a Savanah, a “perfect” 20 gallon Dubia farm creates way too many of the fuckers. A pleasant or pretty enclosure will be lots less efficient, which will actually be better if your needs are more normal.

And especially if you diversify to raise more than just roaches.

I'm incubating my first ever reptile egg - a Northern Spiny Tail. I have a diy incubator and I have housed the egg in one of these with a substrate of perlite.

I note it does not have any air holes. Is this ok or is it chinkshit that will kill my egg eventually?

So I decided to get experimental. I bought some Purina puppy treats for my feeder crickets. 20% protein, 6.5% fat. The thought was that giving them access to a protein source would stop die-offs and decrease cannibalism. They were actively fighting over the treats. I had to put in more.
Just need to be careful, as too much protein or too much fat both cause serious issues when using them as feeders for reptiles or amphibians.

all of that is implicit in the "reddit as a personality" archetype anyway, it doesnt need to be explicitly stated.

i'm obsessed with the idea of putting bugs into an empty plastic box and having them create their own world by making soil capable of sustaining plants through layers of poop and rock erosion particles
but at that point you could just put in like a succulent or something that would be fine just sitting in some rocks and it wouldn't be special so that kind of kills the magic of the idea when it'd be so simple
