The anime only adapts the first volume and does a very poor job at that, so for starters I'd recommend reading the novels.
...And when you do, be prepared for varying degrees of quality. Volumes 2 and 6 are probably the best things Nisio has put out. The rest never gets outright bad, but it never reaches those same heights either.

Icchan, my son, is really great and very different than Ragi or Medaka. Go read after the anime, it's a good lead into it.
His fatal wound breakdown is up there with my husband's curse/sacrifice monologue.
