Maybe if LOGH counts but LOGH has its issues too. Sorting out criterion is next to impossible too given how the genre has died out in the last 20 or thirty years. I base a lot of mecha or sci fi anime on how much fun I have with it or how much I love the characters so my bias shows through considerably. I mean my favorite gundam series most recently are between builders and orphans. Quuuuuuux was great and had interesting ideas but even I feel like the ending was the dumbest thing ever and fell very flat and didn't satisfy everyone but again I had fun and didn't care all that much really. I don't know if that says everything or nothing.

>>291969021The issue stands that the original series as is is incomplete. Several plot points and story ideas just kind of end. Budget was certainly an issue and it shows given how Anno needed further movies to actually try and give the audience a proper satisfying conclusion. Eva, FLCL, Gunbuster, Gundam, LOGH, Gurren Lagaan, Are all wonderful series but at the end of the day there is a fundamental flaw in each of them especially once you start in the 2000s series. You will either love them or hate them and that really keeps the lot of them from being masterpieces if you ask me. Anyone who says otherwise is welcome to their opinion but they need to watch more anime to keep a better idea of Mecha anime from the 90s all the way up to the modern day to see what I'm talking about.
All masterpieces are unique. The Monogatari series is the best anime ever made.
