Taguchi's twitter postBLEACH The Thousand-Year Blood War arc has finally wrapped up its broadcast, and as I watch Pierrot Films shifting their production setup toward other projects, a sense of "it's really over now" finally wells up in me.It was around 2019 when I got involved, so considering that, it's been a full 7 years with BLEACH The Thousand-Year Blood War.We decided to meet with Mr. Kubo, have in-depth discussions, and create it together, so I wrote the script up to episode 4. Rather than simply copy-pasting the original work, we established a basic policy of "reproducing the impressions from reading the original work." I was truly grateful that Mr. Kubo understood the differences between the manga and anime mediums and agreed with this policy.I think there must have been some concerns, but I was very impressed that you entrusted us with various anime adjustments. I remember being really happy when, later on, Mr. Kubo told me "That was good" about the part in episode 2's雀部 funeral scene where we omitted Byakuya's narration and focused solely on the image of雀部 serving under Yama-jii—that was a bold anime direction.Starting from episode 5, the scriptwriting baton was passed to Hiramatsu-san. He wrote most of the 50 episodes. Including his approach to the original work, he completed them with astonishing perseverance and writing skill. Hiramatsu-san is also writing the app game "Mirors High."The animators' tremendous efforts in supporting the content, which became increasingly expansive with each episode, were truly remarkable. It was the first time a situation arose where people gathered because of the work's name, and it made me feel the power of the original work anew.Actually, the second cour was produced under a situation where the schedule was quite tight and pressing. Even so, I remember that thanks to skilled animators who joined us at the appropriate places, we somehow managed to make it to broadcast.

I think the skill and spirit of the production producer, Tominaga-san, have carried over to the present, enabling us to complete the production.Since the anime-original segments that increase significantly from the latter half of the second cour are discussed in various places, I’ll skip over them here.I think the torrent of full-episode color scripts and the diverse scene colors by Goda-san, who was also collaborating with us on color design for this project, are some of the highlights of this work, but the scene colors created across all 50 episodes apparently number as many as 480. Likewise, the collaborative *Sohō no Fukuinshi* had all 50 episodes but only 120 colors. What the heck, can't someone nominate this for Guinness?The presence of the chief production supervisor was indispensable for maintaining quality. Since we had to revise more than 350 cuts per episode, we enlisted three people to handle that volume. They were Hasegawa-san, Komatsubara-san, and Takayanagi-san.Without these three, the characters would never have achieved such stability.The gathering of the general animation director's name in the end credits of episodes 49 and 50 is thanks to Hasegawa-san's consideration. He suggested that we should include all three names.

He’s taken on the whole sequence of key animation from Orihime staggering along bloodied in episode 45 to Sengetsu shattering and taking down Yhwach in episode 49. That’s an insane workload while also doing chief animation director duties!Anyway, the achievements of these three individuals cannot be fully captured even if I write about them. They were simply amazing, and watching each of them confront Mr. Kubo's artwork and gradually come to terms with their own brush was incredibly heartening even from the sidelines.On the production side, we had the participation of truly wonderful people, but I was especially helped by Mr. Zheng, Mr. Chen, and Ueda-kun. They supported the work by participating in all cours. What stood out was that Ueda-kun's storyboards required the fewest instructions from Mr. Kubo. Fewer than Taguchi's (T▽T)Since the conversation turned to the production, let me touch briefly on episodes 45 and 49, which Taguchi was in charge of. Anyway, episode 45 was incredibly tough. Episode 49 also had an abnormal amount of content, to the point where I marvel at how it even took shape. That said, we relied heavily on the animators' skills, so from a directorial standpoint, once the storyboard was complete, what needed to be done was already set in stone.Episode 45 was tough because it was packed with acting scenes, so the relentless fine-tuning of those nuances was a real challenge. It wasn't just about making things move; the director's job was to capture the exact nuances required in the visuals. For this, I was greatly helped by everyone at Studio KAI and animation director Mr. Katayama. Of course, Mr. Komatsubara too.

The production period exceeded a year, so one of the challenges was how to craft it as meticulously as possible within that time. On top of the complex 3D and processing involved, the animation workload ranked quite high compared to the first 45 episodes.By the way, the video for episode 45 used about 23,000 frames. (Episode 49 also ended up with roughly the same number or even more. This is an estimate based on the frame count up to the midpoint, as the exact tally hasn't been finalized yet.)The one who was handling this was Ms. Uemura, who served as both production desk and production coordinator. Though she couldn't be called highly experienced, she worked tirelessly every day, running around desperately to make the work better. I believe we were able to produce this many video segments thanks to Ms. Uemura's hard efforts. I'm grateful to her for not being deterred by Taguchi's unreasonable demands and seeing it through to the end.The production staff of BLEACH Squad were working hard. I think it was intensely grueling work, but it was impressive how everyone tackled it head-on and kept creating. Over the course of six years, I felt the passage of time as everyone's roles changed or advanced. Hirayama-san, who was in settings production at the start, went through the desk position and is now a producer. It's a great team.And the person we must be most grateful to on set is Director Murata. I think it was truly tough starting from the third cour. You demonstrated your skill in those crucial episodes. I feel that without Mr. Murata, things would have been quite difficult, including on set. Thank you very much.

Speaking of Saint Seiya, one thing I found interesting is how The Gotei 13 was inspired by the 12 Gold Saints and similarly to the Gotei, the Saints were massively popular as early as their introduction, however unlike Kubo, Saint Seiya's author Kurumada actually had the balls to kill off all the Gold Saints in the final war of that manga regardless of how popular they were, unlike Kubo who couldn't even kill off Byakuya
