Ive been watching Samurai chaploo and have been really loving it, and I cant help but feeling this formula would work great set in the same time period but in Europe. 3 musketeers era with swaggering floppy hat wearing men with rapiers.A handful of renegades walking around 17th century France broke as hell and living day to day by the sword and odd jobs. full on swashbuckler core mixing 17th century baroque cavalier style with some modern music. Where champloo had the backdrop of no foriegners, It could have the backdrop of religious intolerance, hugonauts and stuff. You can have an up tight knightly guy like Jin a loose hedonist like Mugen, and a wayward girl with a perl earring like Fuu. Though doesnt have to be so 1 to 1. Could even get a bit piratey and hve some cameos from people from around the world like a japanese swordsman. There just aint enough media of this period even though the 3 musketeers are a classic. I have a real craving for anime swashbucklers.
Part of my problem with conceptualizing that is that in transitioning the anime into another setting, its blatant anachronisms have to be individually deciphered. How much 17th century Europe do you actually want vs a fastmoving hiphop caricature with rule-of-cool characters.

>>291939465>How much 17th century Europe do you actually want vs a fastmoving hiphop caricature with rule-of-cool characters.Well I would think do a similar thing as champloo. Shed light on the grimy para-legal aspects of society that are a bit gangsterish in culture, which all cultures had. Maybe im not far enough along, am on episode 8, but there is not that much overt hiphopism, only some archetype melding like beatboxing thuf using the hilt of his sword. episode 8 so far has the most modernisms with the "jin hunter" guy sometimes dipping into hooligan English.>>291939638Oh, I just might!
>>291939638I feel like japs have a unique looking go-to hilt for european swords. something between a rapier like bowl gaurd but without the cross, and the flat knucklebow of a later saber. I dont know historical examples like that, but I always liked how it looked.
>>291937713This one might do some of what you're after.
>>291941551Oh was that the one with the lady-duelist during the French revolution?
>>291941572>ladyAnd, yes.
>>291937713
>>291937713I want the same but with the Earp Brothers and Doc Holliday
>>291937713What about using some other form sub-culutre in replacement of hiphop/gangsta?
>>291943946This, fuck that shit.

>>291944194Punk would be the easy answerHave a swashbuckler going into a scream metal ballad about how a local baron is shitSmells Like Teen Spirit plays in a tavern that turns into a bar brawlA punk revolution 17th century france

>>291941485That's called a basket-hilt
>>291944392I'm pretty sure that by modern terminology, broadswords are double-edged basket-hilted swords. So #2, not #1.
>>291944275HipHop still sort of works by historic conventions, in that it's a musical self-aggrandizement and insult of your opponent.Punk, I fear, relies too much on post great-war social norms to be viable. If you force it to work with your insults of nobility and the church, you'll just end up creating another Hollywood "the middle ages sucked" piece.
>>291944392No, basket hilts more fully enclose the hand. The anime type still largley leaves the sides open.
>>291944504Kinda this, I think Punk works better with the French revolution era. De Sade and stuff.Hip-hop works because the whole period was really in the grips of style, personal honor, revenge killings, excess, and the like.
