It's Jowari da...

I watched it.

Didn't he get a super powerful world dominating true rune? And he got his shit kicked in by a regular lightning sword attack?

Will Nanami live?

You get one too and Luca still tap dances on your face. He is that much of a beast. After an army battle and along side 17 of your party members.

Is this thing even worth picking up if I've never played the game(s)?
Thought about it because it is a non-isekai fantasy, but seems like a dead show thread

well actually, I still liked Yuusha Kei and Clevatess despite going into those with the same thought. It more about being burnt out on all the sameness, rather than Isekai itself

no you could watch a streamer play the game and it would literally be a better anime. Or you could just play it. Either is better.
>>
>>291903077
Sadly it seems to be another one of those mediocre video game anime adaptation.
It's fine to watch if you already played the games because you can fill in the gaps from the anime skipping pasts some of the story, but if you want to get the full experience, it's better to play the games.

I had no idea they were doing this. Is it gonna be only II?
>>
>>291902114
Neither Sword nor Shield is a true Rune by itself, it's only when they join into the Rune of Beginning that they have the full power. And Having a True Rune doesn't make you inherently powerful either, it depends on what the rune in question actually does.

>>
>My brother is feeling hesitant to fulfill his role in leading an army against his best friend

It has been twenty seven years and I am still mad. That shit was fucking stupid. At least with Sialeeds' stunt in V I could see what they were going for even if the execution was wanting. This one's just dumb from start to end.
>>
>>291903077
I would just play the game. But not the HD remaster.
>>
>>291905507
Yeah, this is one of those weird cases where I actually prefer the bad ending. Even putting the Nanami situation aside the way the MC and Jowy just go back to being best buds running around like nothing ever happened just felt so insufferably twee. Jowy did so much shit he does not deserve to get off scott free. But you know how Japan is with their MUH FWIENDSIP!
>>
Now I haven't actually played the game, but this feels like such a cut-and-dry adaptation. Between all the infodumps and random action scenes, the show makes no real effort to get me invested in its characters or the events they find themselves caught up in. Kinda feels like I'm just doing side quests while occasionally stopping to listen to some NPC dialogue but in anime format. Princess is a cuties though.
>>
>>291905663
Princess carry the princess
>>
>>291905663
Funny enough the game also has a bit or an Earthbound reputation where people love to say how great it is but never play it.
>>
>>291905596
Suikoden as a franchise always had the same problem of having silent protagonists despite their stories just crying out for them having their own personalities. The first one could sorta wing it but only because it was kinda hard to give a shit about Ted, and the player could grow fond of Gremio on his own, but II already had the issue of Riou supposedly losing heart right around the Tinto stuff despite the fact that /I/ actually thought the whole thing was going smoothly, and the resolution with Jowy ends up coming across as "Riou is a colossal wuss" rather than him being merciful. Lazlo in IV has the whole plotline about him obviously being Lino's son that never gets explored because it'd require him having a character, as well as his relationship with Snowe that would probably hit a lot harder if he had feelings.

V is by far the one where it sticks out the worst though. Every other game had the Tenkai get roped into a conflict that was technically not theirs, but V's war is so intimately connected with Frey that him not talking was flat out retarded. I still remember one animation where you can see him straight up shout in sorrow with lips moving at all and yet no dialogue.
>>
>>291905663
The game basically goes:

-Here's some very hasty infodump about things you're supposed to care about.
-Oh shit betrayal!
-Join the foreign army.
-Lose and retreat.
-Lose and retreat.
-Lose and retreat.
-Steal a castle from Temu Dracula
-Hire Temu Zhuge Liang
-Actually start winning

That's where it starts to get more enjoyable.
>>
>>291905596
So I played it when I was a kid and I loved Jowy. What did he do that was so bad exactly? I was obsessed with getting him back and the true ending felt kino. But I probably overlooked a bunch of war crimes, I don't know.
>>
>>291906040
The Prince in V was pretty damn expressive for a "silent" protagonist. Maybe it's a bit odd you still have to fill in the blanks but I think he's still the best one because he actually shows consistent emotions rather than having a loyal tag-along tell him how he's feeling. Also his good ending doesn't pass up the cute girl that likes him to go off on gay friendship adventures.
>>
>>291906227
He gets like four different wives to satisfy him too. Absolute chad. And no, the dog thing is NOT canon!

>>291906154
>So I played it when I was a kid and I loved Jowy. What did he do that was so bad exactly?

He murdered Annabelle which aside from being a real dick move escalated the war. Further he kept said war going despite being one of the central key witnesses who knew the only reason it was even happening at all was because of Luca's treachery. He had the power and position to end it right out but he lured you into a trap under the pretense of peace talks. Every death and every battle was, in some way, on his head. And the only justification he gave was some bullshit about the runes destiny, a destiny I should point out, the previous rune bearers were all too happy to tell to piss off.
>>
>>291906154
Jowy supposedly joins Highland for REASONS that depending on the interpretation were "He thought they were unbeatable so he joined to take them over from the inside (and marry the princess he had a crush on)" or just "He thought they were unbeatable so he joined to get the war over quicker (and marry the princess he had a crush on) but then it turned out they were losing so he pivoted".

The issue is that once he does get control, he just keeps the conflict going because either he thought they still had the upper hand, or he believed Highland needed to lose decisively after going all out to make a lasting peace, or both. Except that the way he went about this was not by leveraging Highlands full forces into a brave last stand, but by hiring Leon "War-Crimes Are My Passion" Silverberg, a literal fucking demon, and trigger the True Beast Rune to maximize casualties.

The "good ending" to all this is achieved by having Riou refuse to hold any ill feelings towards Jowy for any of this bullshit and just take his punches like a pussy, and then give up everything he built and go out on a trip with him and Nanami instead of rawdogging the hot gypsy tomboy that wanted to ride his dick. To put it into perspective, the fucking Snowe subplot in IV is a more satisfying example of mercy towards a wayward friend, and it takes a fucking lot to get people to say anything good about IV.
>>
>>291906227
>Also his good ending doesn't pass up the cute girl that likes him to go off on gay friendship adventures.
Yeah, that's another issue with all the previous ones. At least one of the Gaiden games shows Tir does have something going with Kasumi, but Riou being a cuck baggage carrier and Lazlo becoming an immortal hermit always seemed like bullshit.
>>
>>291906382
>>291906424
Thank you. Wild I don't really remember any of that, admiration is a hell of a drug.
>>
>>291906424
It just feels like it undermines a lot of Riou's own growth to have him go back to running beside his friend like a puppy dog. I don't even think Jowy has to die, he can fuck off to be a hermit somewhere, but they've been through too much.
>>
>>291906104
I hope our two protagonists actually become proper characters and start driving the plot forward instead of just going along with the flow, like in this episode. Basically, I want this to turn into something like Heavy Object, except with two bros capturing castles and toppling regimes. Whatsherface should also start contributing to the war effort by having her clothes spontaneously explode, leaving her naked and embarrassed. I miss ENF.
>>
>>291906474
Now that I think about it, a misguided sense of loyalty also factored into it and being a hot topic kid so a black sword edgelord thing was cool.

Tir sort of got a raw deal rune wise. Even Lazlo managed to turn his into a positive power but the Soul Eater is and always shall be a complete asshole and he has to stay away from EVERYONE before he starts going all Elric of Melnibone on shit.

>>
>>291906496
I'd be fine if it were more like the Snowe stuff where Lazlo keeps stomping him but sparing him, and welcoming him back when he's at his lowest as a show of mercy. Or even the stuff in V with Euram. What stings about II is that Jowy gets no backlash whatsoever for all his shit and the good ending both metaphorically and literally hinges on Jowy not taking a single hit, having achieved all he wanted, banging a princess, and then riding off into the sunset while the general of the army that did all the work carries his luggage.

>>291906530
It's kind of implied the Souleater got tamed at the end, so it's safe for him to hang around others like with Gremio. Remember how it actually protected him from Windy since Ted is inside it now. The problem is the same as with the Rune of Punishment: if he ever loses it, the cycle restarts, so he's gotta lay low.
>>
>>291906602
And her mom, too!
>>
>>291906502
The Tenkai star is sadly always sort of a figurehead, and Riou is by far the most figurehead-y of them all. It gets to the point where him bailing because none of this is his business becomes a possibility.

I guess Lazlo is kind of in command, but only because IV is sort of very half-assed plot wise. Frey is probably the only one you could argue is really the commander of his army because he occasionally does stuff without being asked (like springing Lucretia) and being the only Tenkai for whom the war is 100% personal, so his strategist is actually pursuing his goals rather than using him as a mascot.
>>
>>291906424
>and it takes a fucking lot to get people to say anything good about IV.

I can't really DEFEND IV but there's a lot I LIKE about IV. I like a good chunk of the SODs. Some of them being my favorite in the series. I like the Island nations as a setting. I even think the boat, in theory if not practice, was cool. I think Cray was POTENTIALLY one of the more interesting villains and the game will sometimes surprise you with putting in small details and points of effort when you won't expect it. Like more characters than you'd think have voiced lines. It's just kind of a shame the game never really got to live up to it's ideas. Though that said Tactics is actually a pretty good game and while it doesn't fill in all the gaps it gives you a better sense of what IV could have been.
>>
>>291906602
V is sort of "II: Reheated Nachos", but it does absolutely have the most colorful and fleshed out assortment of SoDs in the franchise. Like I can actually recall something interesting about everyone, as opposed to Pallet Swap Ninja and Dancer Girl No Not The Gypsy The Other One.

>>
>>291906753
>POTENTIALLY
I know the feeling, I CONCEPTUALLY love a lot about IV. The premise sounds great, it actually bothers to establish Lazlo is a talented captain instead of just being another Figurehead With a Rune and the whole deals sounds like it should be great. it's just that you then play the game and it's... not.

Great payoff on the Schtolteheim Reinbach gag though, that was cool.

While the gang-up on Luca was great, I will never forgive the fucking war battle beforehand where you can just box him in and still spend like five turns attacking him until the RNG finally decides to let you hit him. I hated the war system in II so much, it's the one thing in which it's easily the worst in the franchise.

Personally, it went V>IV>III>I>II

V is a kinda shitty RTS, but it's engaging enough and actually feels like leading armies.
IV would be cooler if boarding weren't so obviously preferable than cannon-rock-paper-scissors.
III exists.
I is just rock-paper-scissors.
II looks like it'd be a fairly normal strategy game if not for the fucktarded idea of damage being RNG so you get armies charging at each other for several turns and doing nothing.

IV is such a weird game. They include a gag joke ending where you chill with your bros on a deserted island complete with funny portraits. And not only does it have that it has it for a combination of two out of four characters. All of him have dialogue appropriate to their order in the conversation so the same character might not actually have the same line of dialogue. It's just a bizarre amount of effort when the rest of the game is....Suikoden 4.

I'd more say that Thomas from 3 is. He doesn't even get to be the main character, just the guy who owns the castle and the guy who has to do most of the running around recruiting. Though at least he gets to have the cute gate guard waifu so it was probably all worth it.
>>

>>
>>291908792

>>
>>291908541
Yeah, they're pretty fun. There are some fan patched versions for I and II to fix some bugs introduced by the US localizations.
I has some weak points as expected from a first game but is worth playing even if you started later in the series. II is one of the main peaks for the franchise, which is why they picked it to make the anime out of.
III was fun if you're into the series but had some core design issues like the new change they made from the normal 6 character party to having 3 sets of pairs to make up the 6 characters and pairs being directed at the same time instead of separately with the character running around the battlefield with AOEs for spells and abilities instead of the standard JRPG fight set up, and the problem of the head guy leaving partway thru since his contract was up which kept it from getting to really develop fully and was probably what caused IV and V to be prequels instead of moving forward.
IV once again had a few interesting ideas but not enough to really keep it from just being a bit mediocre with it changing up the formula again and doing a 4 character party, it also had some retreading of I's themes to the point of even including a character from I and his True Rune as a bit of fan service.
V was a sort of return to form going back to the 6 character party and was really good even if parts of it were retreading II, the characters were well fleshed out and you got a lot of little choices that felt good as part of the story, example being there's a duel late in the game against a guy that multiple potential party members have a reason to fight and if you bring any of them they'll want to be the one to duel him and if I remember correctly if you bring them all they'll argue a bit over who gets to do it though if any of them lose they full out die for real locking you out of the special ending for having all 108 characters.
>>
>>291908541
1 and 2 are must play greatest RPGs of all time. 3 was the last time the creator worked on it but left midway, good story but it demands patience to go throught some jank.
>>
>>291908850
>3 was the last time the creator worked on it but left midway,
not even midway, he left near the completion of the game which makes it hurts even more. You can even tell the moment he let go of the game, there's a massive tonal shift in near the final stretch of the game
>>
>>291905507
Nanami deserting the army is more for her own mental health rather than the MC's.
You do have an option to run away with Nanami earlier, but it leads to a bad ending, and since you chose to keep going, you chose to accept that MC is characterized as not willing to abandon his duty until the war is over.
>>
What's everyone's opinion on Suikoddn III?

Some say it's just as great as II but some (like me) are also put off by the ambitious gameplay changes and it forcing you to juggle three different protagonist.

Also, Chris and the Zexen Knights did nothing wrong, the Grasslanders are violent assholes.
>>
God how sad is it that Eiyuden Chronicles ended up sucking so hard. This game made Suikoden IV look brilliant. Literally NOTHING in this game was good. Not a goddamn thing.
>>
>>291908947

But it's also has a shit ton of problems, and I understand if people disliked it.
>>
>>291908846
Then there are the spin offs. Tactics released as Rhapsodia in Japan without the Suikoden title stuck on it but still part of Suikoden which as you'd expect is a SRPG and is specifically a spin off for IV which helps make the story of IV make more sense, Swordsman of Harmonia and Duel at Crystal Valley which are side story games for I and II that set up for III and are VNs that were Japan only until fan translations came out, Tierkreis which is an alternate world setting and was typically disliked for not really feeling like it meets up to the originals, and Woven Web of the Centuries which was another alt-universe which was Japan only but got a fan translation back in 2021.
As far as platforms for each:
I and II were PS1 with later remakes for current gen. III, IV, and V were PS2. Tactics was PS2, Tierkreis was DS, Woven Web was PSP, and the VNs were PS1.

Yeah, and then when working on what was supposed to be a spiritual successor kind of game that could maybe have turned into a franchise he died near the end of the development. Not that his death was a likely cause for Eiyuuden Chronicle's issues, but it does probably mean we will never get a follow up that will develop on the game and grow out of those issues.

Hugo is the only one who really made any sense to be the new Flame Champion. Chris has more of a tie to her father and the True Water rune, and Geddoe already has the True Lightning and is just pretending its a normal Lightning rune. If you pick either of them Hugo just gets stuck with the one meant for them instead and Hugo makes the most sense storywise to be Flame Champion since he's the only one who is actually a member of one of the Grasslands Tribes who the Flame Champion is supposed to be a hero of.

Suikoden II maybe too scripted but I really liked how it took place in the same map and let you feel the scale of the war.

No. You have to get 100ths of characters (some entirely missable for a playthrough) to get the true ending of the story. Not worth it.
>>
>>291908959
It had some promise to it, but the way so many important story things just got off screened leaving you feeling like you didn't get to do the important parts and the way all the moments that should have been developing stakes just got neutered like the main character's home down getting destroyed but having not a single death come out of it not even some unnamed NPC just made it feel half-assed. There were some interesting plot threads that never really went anywhere, good character designs that were squandered, interesting character concepts that sat in the background undeveloped, and a setting that could have turned into something with some more good work put into it, but all of that ended up being rather forgettable since they didn't really reach the potential they had. But with Yoshitaka Murayama dying there really isn't going to be another shot at it to give it a chance to improve. I was one of the kickstarter backers for it, and I'm glad it came out, eventually, but it really does feel like it just needed something more to be good. I would give them one last chance if they did make a sequel, even without Murayama, but I doubt they ever will.

The problem is that while they might SAY that, 2 never really shows it. Highland is for all intents a complete autocracy. If they went alongside Luca they'd have followed Jowy. This is something V did a lot better. They actually show how the noble houses really strong arm the royal family.

It felt too safe. There was a part early on when an important hero NPC is ready to pull an Odessa and die for her cause and the main badguy just lets her walk away. Completely unharmed. Zombies overrun a city but you can walk in there and go to the shops without so much a fuss. They say some shit about how the non human races are oppressed but you never see any of them suffer. It almost feels ad libbed. There's a scene at the tale end of the game where they make a big fuss about finding our secret hide out and I was shocked that we were supposed to be hiding because my city is a bustling metropolis. The story is so baffling bad that I honestly can't organize my thoughts about it. The MC is pointless. The brown girl felt tacked on. Blue Guy feels like he COULD have had a dramatic story with his family being his enemies but you don't get any time to focus on that. Instead you get LOL WACKY sharks and a retarded munchkin screaming I'M LUCKY as her only character trait and is also somehow the most important person in the world.

And if the story wasn't bad enough the actual gameplay was even worse. Characters range from doing no damage to shit damage. Magic is useless. The mini games are excruciating. Duels don't feel like they have any logic outside of being those EPIC BATTLE animations off newgrounds and the war battles make S2's look fun.

Anyone remember the sequel to this game? It had a seriously bizarre battle system, like FFT but simultaneous turns. It was like playing the board game Battleship. You had to guess where the enemy would be and which direction they would cast and attack, then the turns resolved at the same time. This is the story of a deranged game.
>>
>>291911323
if following the true ending he's arguably one of the worst, imagine being such a bitch that you accept your traitorous war criminal "best friend" back into your posse and pretend nothing ever happened

Bland. He's pretty bland. The game really wants you to get attached to the conflict between him and his buddy but it really feels like other characters do too much of your speaking for you.

It was a bit of an ugly game too. Interesting idea but I don't think it ended up working. There's a mod that makes the battles more traditionally turn based, but I can't say how well it works. Let’s be honest, neither of those things has any emotional impact. Tir’s struggles ring hollow because we have no idea how he feels about any of it. Riou’s willingness to forgive everything Jowy does feels wussy because we have no idea what their relationship is like beyond “well, he’s Riou’s childhood friend”. Putting a mute literally who at the center of a story-heavy game always makes the story worse, and Suikoden’s MCs are particularly bad at showing the leadership the game pretends they have.
>>
>>291908601
I think 1 to 5 are all worth playing. 1, 2 and 5 being the "good" ones. 3 and 4 aren't bad games though. The biggest problem with both of them is repetitive travel over same areas. Running across the same plains as 3 characters in 3, or sailing the stupid boat in 4.
>>
>>291909446
Also the fact that Jowy didn't just "continue the war", he went into extra douchebag tactics to drag on the fighting even after Highland was clearly losing ground. He wasn't forced into hiring fucking Yuber into his army, he did all that on his own.
>>
>>291902314
At least he's well aware of what he's doing and owning up to it.

If they wrote his character today, they'll give him a sad backstory and write off every atrocity he committed to be the works of the beast rune.
>>
>>291908947
Interesting ideas, none brought to fruition. Character arcs just seem like they cut off right at the point where they should be getting somewhere and everything gets wrapped up too quickly with "Forget all our previous disagreements, we need to go kill the evil wizard to SAVE THE WORLD FROM DOOM" which is a very un-Suikoden-like scope for a conflict. Even in the first one, Windy's plot with the Souleater was running alongside the state-military conflict, it didn't swallow it.
>>
>>291906104
If the protagonists just steamrolled the enemy from the get go; there won't be a need to acquire all 108 stars of destiny, is there?
>>
>>291913372
Funny thing is that the 108 Stars thing is never canonically explained, actually. You don't need them to win the actual conflicts. The first game makes a very vague reference to the concept of gathering the stars, and then this is never fleshed out again, you just get someone to ominously gift you with a list in the other games and nothing ever builds on that. 3 is the worst in that they don't even bother doing that, the list just shows up in the middle of the map without any reference to it.

At least in IV and V they do settle on it being the key to turn the True Runes into their benevolent state, but in the first game it just comes down to letting you revive Gremio through some shenanigans with the Gate Rune, and in II you unlock a spell just by getting them before an arbitrary date.

They did give him a sort of tragic backstory as of the Suikogaiden VNs. When he was young he and his mother were kidnapped by "bandits" who were actually City State soldiers from Muse, and his father left Luca and his mom to get captured to save himself rather than getting kidnapped with them, his mom got raped a bunch by the soldiers while he was forced to watch and his dad didn't really do much about it. His sister isn't his father's child, she's a result of the rapes. And then his mother died as a result of all of it, possibly due to killing herself. So he blames his father for the rape and death of his mother, sees her in his sister in a way that makes him particularly mad, and really wants to kill the people of the City State Alliance in general now. The atrocities are all him though and the Beast rune is just a tool he uses along the way. It never treats that backstory as any kind of excuse, just a thing that started him off.
>>291909455
>How did he do it? Is he Lu Bu?
He's supposed to be modeled a bit after Xiang Yu who was the Conqueror-King whose defeat by the guy who ended up starting the Han dynasty of China is generally considered a major part of what allowed for the start of the Han dynasty. Xiang Yu was known for being a great warrior and tactician but absolutely useless at diplomatic relations, he even had a similar death scene to Luca with the whole fighting off waves and waves of guys until it was just him left covered in wounds.

A game is to be played. You see the whole main story if you play it. Many characters are just irrelevant extras, there's no need to be a compulsive completionist right of the bat. Getting everyone gives you some extra cutscenes, but it doesn't change the experience. Complaining you can't find all extras on a first playthrough is like complaining you can't beat an arcade game with 1 coin on your first try. If you only care about the ending of a game, why play the whole game on the first place? Interactive media might nof be for you.
>>
>>291913484
The remasters are good enough, there's no pozzing. The new translation is... different. I wouldn't say it's better or worse, they did fix some mistakes but in the end it's the same thing with different wording.
The worst thing is that in Suikoden 1 a lot of background graphics were changed for worse. You could see the walls, ceilings and outside of the buildings you're in, but they made they all black void in the remaster (it was always like that in Suikoden 2).

Also loved how all of Albert Silverberg's brilliant tactics ended up being "I had the Deus Ex Machina magic chick use her magic to magically magic some bullshit up. Let's not forget Leon Epsteinberg moving into the city he organized the genocide of afterwards because "he liked the peace and quiet." What a shame his cute noble sister dies and you are left with anime-Henry Kissinger to be your strategist (in 1). His other brother Matthew is alright I guess.
>>
>>291916666
Don't most Suikoden have the option of either becoming a politician or fucking off to have your own adventures though? In 5 you can also leave on a ship with your bodyguard love interest if you want. I am at least sure that 2 and 5 more or less give you both options, although in 2 if you want to have the best ending you have to eventually go on an adventure, IIRC. But in 5 you can make your choice freely at the end.
>>
>>291918442
In 5, if you don't gather all the stars, you can't turn the Sun Rune to its life-giving state and heal Lyon, so she dies and Frey leaves Falena with Georg (which is obviously non-canonical because he definitely isn't travelling with him during Suikoden 1). Frey staying is the canonical ending.

2 is backwards. Riou stays if Nanami or Jowy die. He always leaves with them in the good ending.

Lazlo's only two endings are island hermit or corpse, and the only difference for Tir is whether Gremio is with him or not.
>>
>>291904243
One issue with starting with 2 is that a lot of the charm and uniqueness of the game came from the novelty of it continuing right from the established world and characters from 1. Like, Flik is the guy you had a conflict with in the first game and is now a much cooler chill dude who's slightly melancholic from what happened then. It kinda loses much of the punch if you don't already know these guys.
>>
>>291916458
The new English translation was handled by an AI company. There are many fixes in some terms but at the same time there's some weird changes and things that needed better attention ended up the same. The whole process was well detailed in the Suikosource forums. It's a pick your poison deal, by the end any translation is understandable enough but far from what the original Japanese text deserves.

No, it's possible to leave in the 108 stars ending with Lyon alive as well. The epilogue of that ending also explicitly states that Frey/Lyon split off from Georg before Georg returns to the northern continent, so there is no conflict in terms of canon.

NTA, but... Sorry, I can't hear you over Nanami's armor folded 1000 times. It's one of the EXTREMELY rare cases where an out-of-battle gameplay element directly affects a major plot point in a JRPG that isn't just a hidden timer going in the background.

I think the buddy system is awesome because it forces you to strategize by putting restrictions on spells and item usage. The difficulty is nice too, im glad theres a little bit of challenge instead of being very easy like 1 and 2.
I also like the Trinity site system and the three protagonists and the defined dynamic they have with their groups. Up to a certain point the games story is probably the best in the series until the villains take center stage and it starts pulling the same retarded writing trick over and over again, that is "the villains beat our heroes in a cutscene and have them right where they want and they are willing to kill thousands to achieve their goal but theyre not going to finish them off here". FUCK THIS. the first few times you can explain it as "we have no time and these guys arent a threat lets move on" but one the finale kicks in and all three factions have definitively proven themselves as huge obstacles to their goal THERES NO FUCKING REASON why they would let them live after every scripted loss and cutscene defeat. Its literally just an excuse to move the plot forward because they couldnt think of another way to do it. either actually make them kill of the protagonists or try to when they have the chance, have some allies show up to bail them out at the last moment, DONT HAVE SO MANY SCRIPTED LOSSES AT ALL, just DONT FUCKING MAKE THEM LEAVE FOR NO DISCERNIBLE REASON WHAT THE FUCK

>Assumes her responsibility as Queen, changes the rules to give her brother the King Consort position so he can stay in the country where he's effectively hailed as a god of war and has Hot Bodyguard, Hot Bodyguard 2, Fancy Noble Lady and Hot Fisherwoman Tomboy all clearly wanting to ride his three-section-staff.

Its related to the kind of armor shes wearing? i never got that ending so i always assumed it had something to do with getting all 108 stars.

You need all the Stars before a certain point so Leknaat unlocks the final spell of the Shield Rune, and she must also have a defense stat above a particular threshold.

>>291920598
In Suikoden 2, I mean.
>>
>>291908947
I think it's the best game in the series, especially in 2026 since you can frame-skip the backtracking which was its biggest issue. Each protag is likeable (well maybe not Chris) and has an actual personality, and you get to organically use most of the recruits since they're split between 4 protags. S2 has the highest high (killing the last boss halfway through), but the rest of the game is just running on fumes and you don't even get to torture Jowy to death, bringing down the overall satisfaction level.
>>
>>291920619
Suikoden II's ending is after the war has just wrapped up Riou being pushed to be the leader of the new government, if you say no you get to run around and can talk to NPCs to get new post war dialog in some places, if you go back to where Jowy and Riou left the mark on the rock you get the final duel against Jowy where the intended thing is to learn from Genkaku and refuse to attack in the duel doing nothing but defend, either way Jowy will be dying and begging Riou to take the Black Sword, you're given a yes/no kind of option, if you have the full 108 and say no enough times Leknaat will show up to fix Jowy and turn the Sword and Shield into the Rune Of Beginnings, then you find out Nanami faked her death and go on an adventure or whatever, if you did not have all 108 or you choose to take the Sword Riou will go back and accept his position as the leader of the new country

watching the anime is quite something, besides the fact I should really replay the game but I am such a lazy person
It is unreal how many tropes were started by it and JRPGs still continue using these tropes.

Like what? This game was pretty late to the scene, I bet whatever "tropes" were done by plenty of earlier games.

Indeed. None of the Suikodens were big sellers or legendary critical darlings either, making it statistically unlikely they influenced anything.

The whole sequence of sneaking into the camp was so confusing to me. Were they discovered because they chose to bring their unique iconic weapons with them despite wearing disguises?

https://youtu.be/kSdtNzMOF2c?si=0T2lE8z13Ywy5Fu0&t=4835
The anime adaptation is very rushed, the whole camp sequence made more sense in the game.
In the game they snuck into the camp by pretending to be survivors of the Unicorn Brigade when everyone in Highland knows there were 2 survivors who were spies that caused the massacre, then later on Rowd saw them and alerted the soldiers in the camp.
For some reason they changed it in the anime into Rowd just instantly knowing they were sneaking around in the camp as if he's an Oblivion guard.

I never really got that, I figured Gremio could go with Tir because Soul Eater already ate him once. If Tir gets close to anyone else they're at risk of being eaten.

Two River is hilarious because when you get down to it, Shu sends you to try and broker some diplomatic agreement, you spend basically the entire thing chasing a hood rat for your wallet and achieving nothing, until Highland troops invade completely unprompted thus giving Shu an excuse to deploy troops in response and justify Two River being indebted to you and joining.

It's the most "just fuck around until the plot happens" sequence in the whole game.
>>
>>291924233
In both scenarios these two dorks had a poorly conceived plan, to be honest.
>>
>>291924796
>It's the most "just fuck around until the plot happens" sequence in the whole game.

For all the love 2 gets there's a few parts that really do just fee padded to hell. You got this whole mess in Two River. You got the school section where they think it's a clever idea to have the face of the rebellion go into enemy territory as a student and the whole Neclord Redux really doesn't add much to the main conflict.

Is Suikoden V actually better written than II? Is it our time, V bros? Vindication...
>>
>>291924956
In many regards. People say the villains are a bit shallow and while you can look at Luca as the "ur" example of a villain with shallow motives he has a lot more screen charisma than Gizlle did. Though other characters pick up the slack when it comes to complexity. V has far and away the best written main stars though.
>>
>>291925013
I liked the strategist in V. She was cute and big brain.
>>
I can't take a nigga named jowy seriously. why did they name him that
>>
>>291924956
It has worse villains, not bad, just kind of predictable, and less dramatic turns and twists, in addition of not having the luxury of continuing plot threads from a previous game on account of being a prequel. The supporting cast is great though, probably the most memorable in the franchise, and it is still a load of fun, plus it is the one game where you 100% are invested in finishing the war. Even the Stupid Big Thing that happens later on isn't actually stupid, it's just badly executed.
>>

I love how you go recruit her and she just says "I accept" before you even say a word because why the fuck else would you be there if not to recruit her. >>291925144
I liked the plan of letting the enemy occupy the submarine castle while it was afloat, then sneaking back in to the secret water maintenance area, submerging it and retaking the now empty castle because the entire enemy garrison drowned in agony. Pretty cash. I realize it only worked because the bad guys were dumb enough to take a sinking castle whose workings they didn't fully understand but it was still fun.

I feel like there's a weird issue when a villain has, what he believes, is a GOOD motive and we're supposed to see them as intelligent but then they always just end up doing horrible shit and their justification and ultimate plan is just kind of really stupid if you think about it at all.

S3's villain is supposed to be more complex but he's just dumb. Yeah yeah he sees the bad future of entropy and the ashen world and true runes are assholes but he folded pretty quickly compared to people who have been carrying these things for much longer. It's not like there was a serious time crunch either. And wah wah wah I'm a clone.

>>
>>291925255
The cool part is the implication: it's an extremely fucked up tactic when you get down to it because you're not planning on besieging and asking them to surrender, but rather straight up drowning thousands of them and butchering the rest like rats in a barrel. It's the sort of tactic that would normally get credited only to the strategist being pragmatically cold in order to leave the main character with his hands clean.

But then you get to interrupt Lucrecia with "So I go and open the sluice gate now?" before she gets a chance to explain the trap and she goes "I'm impressed, you figured it out then?" thus establishing that Frey had foreseen and was 100% on board with the "Gruesomely butcher all the goatfucking invaders to a man and then let the flood wash out their corpses" plan from the start.
>>
>>291926020
I like having those chances for interpretation with the main character. I know it's discussed a lot ITT the pros and cons of silent protagonists, but these moments are neat. There are a few choices you can lean into, like being an unapologetic perv with your hot family or insisting on handling every duel personally which can give off that 2000s edgelord style despite the prince's feminine looks.
>>
>>291926115
There's a lot of bits to the story that suggest Frey is a ridiculous hardass that simply has the face of a porcelain doll.

Like the bit where Georg mutters something about how it'd be nice to have Lucretia around, so Frey goes, completely unprompted, to fetch the one guy he knows who probably does criminal stuff, executes a prison breakout in an afternoon, loops around to win a naval battle that forces Raftfleet to throw their lot with you personally (thus gaining a power base independent from Barrows) and then he just strolls back into the Barrows manor with Lucretia in tow and nobody can believe how the hell he pulled that shit.

Also the fact that he can beat the drug-boosted Childerich to death, which is patently nuts.

One thing that's pretty neat is how you can have other characters fight in the duels. Belcoot gets his rematch if you let him and depending on whose around and in your party completely rando nobody SoDs can fight him. How and why they never thought to making a dueling mini game is beyond me.

One of the angles of attack was explicitly to cut off the hanging bridge (the only way to walk out), and then use the Dragon Horse Cavalry to attack their few boats. Unless they swam the whole way to the shore, they absolutely all drowned.

I guess the difference is that these were Armes troops. Early on they have the thing where they take the trouble to spare the Falenan troops in the dam (though that also had propaganda benefits). These were Armes forces brought in from abroad though, so pretty much everyone is like "yeah, fuck those guys."
>>

He had a pretty good background, but you gotta dig into it with some investigations and random chats. Apparently his dad was a nutjob who trained him who abused the shit out of him and trained him to a psychotic degree, and when Mueller saw that, he flew into a rage and murdered him, taking Richard under his wing. That's why Richard follows him around like a puppy out of thanks. Basically, Richard was beaten into being a retard autist with insane sword skills, to the point even Belcoot says he can't match him.

I think you learn most of this from a letter you get if you get him killed in the duel with Childerich.

Funny thing about the Dragon Horses is that I don't think I ever even bothered to use them in war, since I'm pretty sure all naval combat got literally chewed on by these psychotic Furry Krakens. The little bitches would just straight up solo the whole enemy navy and come out completely unscathed.

At least they programmed ways to skip entire scenes in Suikoden II (going straight to the waterfall, not waiting for Jowy in Muse, going back to sleep instead of learning Genkaku's past, etc) to make the Clive side quest fairly doable on a later playthrough
But yeah, one of the neat things the II Remaster did was give the option to remove the timer to Clive's quest so you can see it without skipping large chunks of the story
