rip man... it's hard to understate just how influential he was in the manga sphere and out

Chiba and Kajiwara were always a real odd couple.
Chiba was a hippie that dreamed about world peace, Kajiwara hung out with Yakuza members and regularly got into brawls.
Joe I think, really got the most out of that mixture.
>>
>>291886488
Who are you calling a garbage fellow?

One of the most influential figures in manga. People have probably seen a reference to it in one way or another through the shows they've watched and don't even know.

hate you fags that gotta act extra gay for creator deaths like this, guy actually reached a decent age to pass away, above average even.
>>
You know, in the manga, when Joe gets sent to juvenile detention, it's pretty high security but otherwise just some place. In the anime adaptation, they change it to be on island. Which is fine, you know, make it a little spicier, except there's a story arc where Joe successfully does a jailbreak with the pigs. And the whole thing is that he could just walk but way, but intentionally chooses to go back to the detention center. In the manga that makes sense, but in anime, he's still stranded on the island. Kind of robs the scene of its significance, you know?
>>
>>291886299
87, he was a fucking kid
>>
>>291886681
You have to tho. As a sign of respect. The guy had guts to end his series the way he did. It still stuck with people decades later.

According to Chiba, Joe wasn't meant to be dead and he just drew that page last minute as he didn't like Takamori's original ending that was pitched where we were to see Joe recovering at Yoko's in the final page and looking out aimlessly.
Chiba would eventually draw that later as an illustration though.
Either way you see it, Joe's boxing career was done for and he would've had to live through years of CTE and other after-effects.

Leiji Matsumoto and Chiba were great friends and once went to Machu Picchu where they enjoyed high altitude thin air sickness that made everything look golden, literal city of gold. Both gone now. Here he's seen at Matsumoto's funeral which wasn't that long back, with Goku's voice seen too (we've already lost Masako Ikeda, Maetel to her Tetsuro in GE999).

Regardless if Joe lived with the consequences of punch drunk syndrome, or simply died, it's tragically fitting. He ignored his own health to keep boxing obsessively, and while that kind of live is where he was at his happiest, going as far as he did while ignoring his body's health would have consequences.

Joe and Rikiishi were examples of what NOT to do with your life. Boxing is not for the faint of heart. Every low raked boxer is out there getting punched in the face for scraps. They could be doing anything else, but boxing is their paths. There was no other path for Rikiishi and Joe other than boxing. But at the same time, Joe understood that life doesn't hold any value if you live in a cage. Him not settling down is why so many people find Joe inspiring, because he traded his life for living genuinely, even if it resulted in tragedy.

I guess people want to have their cake and eat it too. They want Joe to have had a genuine fulfilling life but not in boxing. It's a very coward interpretation because they cant handle how ingenuine their own lives are in comparison to Joe's. They don't wanna accept that living genuinely is risky, because they've been told their entire lives that risk is to be avoided.

I love the large panels and full-on splash pages with a whole bunch of extras, usually the people of the shanty town or the crowd during matches. Certain decades bring forth certain types of talents. It's like 2016 where it felt like half of all important musicians and actors where dying because the 60s and 70s revolutionized music and media in many ways and the ones doing that were young adults by then, meaning that they were born in the 40s or 50s. Those people simply reached the mid 70s or 80s post 2016 so it's natural to see most of them dying. It's like how most of my family and every older dude I knew died when I turned 30s. Age difference. When I turn 30 they turn 70 and that's sadly when many people die.

Forget about japanese spirit, it's about the warrior's pride and the feeling that, even if it's a life without many other prospects or even if it kills you, it's the only place where you feel alive/loved, and that happens in every culture

Because we've always read Slam Dunk or Captain Tsubasa during our youths thinking "man, i wish i were playing some sports right now", and not thinking instead about the value of teamwork, friends, responsible authority figures, or simply the need to improve ourselves in general

>Joe and Rikiishi were examples of what NOT to do with your life.
Rikiishi's chapters where he's losing weight to fight Joe were so damn unnerving. It gets more tragic if you think about it, because after the fight, Joe went on a growth spurt, which could have put him on another weight class. So if Joe had lost his fight against Wolf, his rematch with Rikiishi could be delayed long enough for Joe to go through that growth spurt, and Rikiishi wouldn't have to go down TWO weight classes to have that rematch.

>>291890961
It's inspiring because Joe started as a hobo wandering from town to town, being a con-artist and getting into fights, and by the manga's end he was a world class boxer. It feels pretty genuine because Joe took his sweet time even getting interested in boxing, since initially he didn't even care about Danpei teaching boxing and just wanted money. Even without the whole Japanese spirit angle, the development of his life is pretty organic.

Eigthyseven is a proud age to reach.
While I was never much of a fan of Ashita no Joe (or stories of that kind in general), I won't deny its influence and importance. And, perhaps more importantly, I have to note that I always found the artstyle impressive, with its high level of detail. Quite a contraced to the more reduced styles that were more common at the time.

This news made me realize that I've never actually read any of his other work. I probably should. Particularly the non-sports manga from his early career do intrigue me.

Rest in peace, sensei.

I don't think Joe remaining a crippled bum and Yoko's kept man would have been a very well received ending. I met Masao Maruyama at a convention and he said one of the things he was most grateful to experience first-hand was seeing anime become something made for adults with Ashita no Joe

He also said he wrote a lot of the anime himself under a pen name since so many lines got cut from the screenplay that the writers ended up quitting, the director basically told him YOU DO IT and he was like
>well I guess I'll write a general guideline

He also waited in line for 3 hours with everyone else to surprise Hiroshi Nagahama and ask for a self portrait, since he originally started at Madhouse, which Maruyama co-founded

Yeah part of what makes Joe iconic is that he was made to fight and when he couldn't fight anymore that was it. The final page is great because maybe he dies in the ring, maybe he doesn't, but his career is over either way and he rose from nothing to become a legend and goes out either way content with how things have gone having made something of himself on his own terms.

I mean he was already popular in manga before Ashita no Joe but nothing relevant to non-Japanese people. I remember when Kodansha was celebrating some anniversary they had famous people recommend their favorite Kodansha-published classics and someone named Shidenkai no Taka (which is older than Ashita no Joe). He was probably the fist guy to appear in over 1000 issues of the same magazine, before people like Morikawa or Itagaki were even getting off the ground and only a very small portion of that was Ashita no Joe.

Oh right, I found it, I have no idea why publishers do these stunts if they delete the evidence afterwards. When asked to name a Kodansha-published work that they love or most impacted their life, the big winner was just Tetsuya Chiba. One famous old mangaka picked Ashita no Joe plus one young youtuber guy. Another famous mangaka picked the magazine but mentioned Joe and they chose to represent he magazine with an issue that had Joe on the cover. A third famous old mangaka (all of these mangaka are very famous in Japan but like Chiba, nobody outside Japan gives a shit about them) picked Shidenkai no Taka which was two works before Ashita no Joe and George Morikawa of Hajime no Ippo fame picked Harris no Kaze (the work right before Ashita no Joe). Another slightly younger but still famous to Japan only mangaka picked Chiba's short stories. Here is the link from the Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20221112120331/https://www.kodansha.com/wmk/

Taking all those works into account his prime influential years were 1963-1973 and his target demographic is now-old Japanese men but obviously before 63 he was a popular shojo mangaka so nobody would cite that stuff today. And the two major works he launched at the same time right after Joe are probably too modern for the people they picked to interview. His 1980's and 90's are probably where he was seen as no longer very relevant but still active. But most of that time was just spent on a singular golf manga which is his longest work. And then he came out of retirement a decade ago to do a little biography manga in full-color that had a few pages per chapter and I guess is now ended with his death. Obviously that would be recommended. Since it's about him including his childhood, it also features his two little brothers as kids who were famous manga creators as well and one was an early famous mangaka suicide (or maybe even the only famous one I know of besides that recent woman).
>>
What are the chances of Weekly Shonen Magazine paying tribute to Chiba? Slim to none is my guess.
>>
>>291888647
I read an autobiography some ex boxer wrote waaay back in grade school. Some neighbor had put out a big box of books in the trash. I can't find it online since I can't remember the name but it was all about how this guy was a real prospect as a young man but his career never took off and he ended up being a can, a sparring partner who'd go from gym to gym for a pittance and occasionally be thrown at a young up and comer to pad their stats. He developed a severe tremor in his 30s and had someone else write the book as he dictated (or so it said in the intro). I want to say he boxed in the 50s but I can't remember, anyways despite it all the last chapter of the book ends with him saying he can't imagine any other life he could have lead, boxing was the only way he knew how to make a living.
>>
As dozens of famous mangaka who got their start in the 50's were dying all at once, I always thought of Chiba as the active one still around. Is there anyone mainstream left now that he has passed? Apparently Tsunoda Jiro is still alive. He coincidentally drew another hit in the same magazine as Joe written by the same writer as Joe at the same time as Joe. Because of how long mangaka live, it will probably be decades before authors who were officially translated to English start passing.
>>
>>291886271

>>
>>291904968
Big Comic obviously will since he was active there. Isn't it unusual for authors to get tributes from magazines they were not actively working with? I'm sure this could inspire someone to publish a personal tribute one-shot or something to him in a place like Weekly Shonen Magazine but nobody in editorial there would have been around when he was. Some of them probably weren't even born.

Karate Baka Ichidai. Tsunoda stopped drawing it after a falling out with Ikki Kajiwara and so the rest of the serial was drawn by Joya Kagemaru.

I get a lot of my manga knowledge from Japanese sources so I don't actually know what all gets scanlated. I do find myself surprised by things getting picked up recently that nobody would have touched back in the day. If I think of authors who worked in the same magazines as Shirato (and maybe did historical stuff if that's what you liked), Sabu to Ichi is fully scanlated and is just now getting rereleased in Japan as of like a month ago. Muyonosuke apparently had its first volume translated by a digital publisher JManga that went out of business a decade ago but it's still seeded on nyaa. Maybe I shouldn't tailor recommendations to your tastes but it's too broad otherwise and I have to research their scanlation status. You're probably more likely to find general hits from Weekly Shonen Magazine that were published in that Ashita no Joe period like Kyojin no Hoshi has a partial scanlation. Up until recently Kawasaki never had a single work translated to English but he's obviously a big deal in Japan. Asura was recently scanlated, that was a series that got its debut issue banned from sale to minors in some regions (same magazine where Joe was being published). But a lot of that stuff gets ignored by scanlators, not just because it's old but because they are often big time investments. Plus English people don't like baseball and the Japanese fucking loved that shit hardcore back then. You're not going to see Yakyū-kyō no Uta or probably any Mizushima (besides Zenikko I guess) in English ever. Also manga was very melodramatic back then. Lots of poverty, cannibalism, suicidal protagonists, etc. and probably hard for most modern manga audiences to relate to. I have a short series from Chiba about an impoverished village who tries to rob a child for his dead parent's hidden money and it ends with his girl burning his dying body in a pile of the recovered money before the villagers can get to it. Published while Joe was in the middle of its run.

I'm not particularly into historical stuff but that was my first glimpse at how much shit I was missing out on by sticking to whatever manga made it's way to me naturally, I liked it so much I went out and got a hardcopy to re-read at home since I'm lucky enough that it got a release in my native language. I've found a few interesting things by following certain scanlation groups but other than that I dunno how to look for this stuff in English.

I'm reading Takao Saito's Suvival right now so I guess I'll read Sabu to Ichi next, or Asura first since that's so short.

He's been popular since the 50's. If starting in the late 60's is where you think people are too old, you're an idiot. Those people are all still alive. Kids like Go Nagai were starting when Ashita no Joe did. The writer of Hokuto no Ken got his start while Joe was ongoing (Joe ended in 1973). Even extremely young and way later authors like Otomo of Akira fame got his debut only weeks after Ashita no Joe ended. Chiba had over a dozen series before Joe. Ryoichi Ikegami just recently ended a successful series with the writer of Eyeshield 21 and he debuted before Ashita no Joe, at the time of Ashita he was serializing the original Japanese Spider-Man manga. The artist of the big Magazine hit just before Joe is still alive. Plus there's all the women too who started in the 60's as male authors shifted away from shojo. Year 24 Group ladies are still active. I don't know if it's even been possible yet for female mangaka to die of old age considering they are Japanese and when they would have debuted. The people who have been dying this decade (with Chiba being one of the last of his generation) were already all deeply established in their careers by the time Ashita no Joe started.

Holy fuck I never the author of Ashita no Joe had it this. I feel bad for the Taiwanese mother more since this was her only daughter and child. The Triad guys that killed her all got killed or executed. That hostage story with the South African family is also pretty crazy.
No wonder Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, and Jet Li did a fuck ton of police crime action films.

Ashita no Joe was the first spokon that truly made an impact on me. Its story, narrative, characters, raw intensity, and highly realistic setting created a standard that no subsequent manga could ever match. While the trend during the Showa era was to churn out as many baseball themed manga as possible, this series set a major milestone and became a classic, and that’s even before considering its legendary ending. People don’t fully grasp the magnitude of the loss of this duo, first Kajiwara, and now Chiba.
>>291910290
Neither the Monkey Punch's death nor the Mizuki Shigeru's reached 1,000, and I fear the worst for the future when the same thing happens with Go Nagai or even Rumiko.
>>
>>291910505
Go Nagai won't even get a sticky. Rumiko will get a huge sticky because she's casual af.
>>
>>291910531
It would be really sad if Nagai didn’t have a sticky, he was a pioneer in many genres and his influence was enormous, even greater than Tezuka’s. If that were to happen, i'd completely lose all faith in /a/ (aka neo-/a/).

>>
>>291909569
I think she understood him well to know Joe was never going to change, so she decided to walk away before watching him self-destruct. Joe was like living your dream even if is self-destructive, Nishi is like a simple and routine life. So she choose Nishi over Joe.
>>
>>291909569
like a lot of ashita no joe, I feel this is up to interpretation, especially the meaning of noriko's expression after joe's speech. In the wake of chiba's death I saw a lot of japanese people talking about that scene.
>>
>>291910805
forgot to say, the way I always interpreted norikos reaction to joes best man speech was that she was looking at him with pity. and as for joes speech, I felt it was pretty melancholic. not that joe had any sort of regret over noriko, but maybe sadness watching people he was with from the start of his boxing career enter a new world, far away from his. joe was always alone, but right before the mendoza fight I dont think he had felt more alone since he was thrown in juvie. even danpei who was closest to him probably never really understood joe. Id say only carlos and yoko at the end of the mendoza fight when she returns after running away really understood joe.

It's not crazy at all. Evangelion first aired before most of today's anime audience was even born. As a general rule, people are prone to engage with whatever work arrives new on the scene during their own time and don't "start with the Greeks." It's the same with all those people who've heard that Citizen Kane supposedly is the best movie ever made and hugely influental at any rate, but how many outside dedicated film students have actually watched it?
>>
>>291917251
It's Toei's version of the Sansho the Bailiff tale which Kenji Mizoguchi had adapted 7 yrs before. It was meant to be more serious than other Toei animated films and earn animation prestige and recognition from adults. Many animators didn't like the idea of showing a depressive film like this to children however, showcasing tragedy and characters being rather powerless. It doesn't encourage optimism and fighting like Horus does. It ended up in a strange place in history. But it's one of their best classics. NTA.

>how many outside dedicated film students have actually watched it?
Well, depends on whom you ask. I have. It's not that great, by the way, technical achievements aside it's a rather trite and simplistic story that hinges on one single gimmick.
Pretty much anyone who's actually interested in the medium of film has. Of course, if you polled general audiences at a cinema, yes, they'd be more likely to have seen the newest Marvel slop. But I assume that's not how that chart in question came to be, is it? Considering that practically everyone on there had heard about Evanglion and Gundam and even something relatively non-mainstream as LotGH, tells me that the people polled would consider themselves anime fans. Shouldn't they be the equivalent to /film/-threads over on /tv/? I.e. the guys who've all seen Citizen Kane and don't care about contemporary mainstream cinema much?

Have you read the Great Gatsby? Or any of the countless US novels of that time whose main point was a subversion of the "American Dream" and a sceptical look at wealth and success? It was a whole genre, and by the time Citizen Kane came around, it had already fallen out of fashion. But not only is Citizen Kane a late arrival, it also failed to add anything novel or unique to the general concept. Without the gimmicky twist (that everyone knows beforehand nowadays anyway), all you're left with is a cookie-cutter protagonist and a badly-paced, poorly-structured skeleton of a flashback plot.
Do you really think it gets taught in film schools and rated highly by film fans because of its writing? No, that's all down to its visual language, its camerawork, set-design, editing and for being arguably the first film who brought countless clever special effects together and perfected their use. For that, it certainly deserves the praise it gets. Not for telling a simple tropey story that had been told over and over before.
>>
>don't watch old
arcade and jp dev for those years had decent use of budget and staff counts, games for world tournament could just use about 250mb
fairly stopped after dc, then ps2 and later became dumbed down difficulty, budget out the ass for things like muh 150gb+ graphics(resolution), and stupid staff counts
it made a lot of moonlander devs leave, even some gaijin ones
now retards are shit at games and applaud stuff like dark souls for difficulty, but make them play an older arcade (fighting)game and they'd get raped by cpu etc
the same retardation is happening with chinese cartoons
literal china with disappearing staff/budgets, and stupid attempts at needless res that get little animation
they try to hide it with things like stupid segments of uber zoom ins on a single eye etc that can be a still frame
if they can get away from china and stop with needless res etc, ease workflow to make 13 ep cours instead of cramming nonsense(res) for 8, i think they could recover instead of degrading further into dumb stills
alas 3d and ai is getting easier, i can only hope it leads to fair blessing than a curse
and funnily enough, usable 3d for workflow becomes an issue at needless higher res, the same goes for ai spam
>>
>>291886271

That's a lot of cope for trying to shit on a brilliant film just because you are low IQ and have no taste or ability of appraisal. It's not praised for being the first at anything, because it wasn't (despite your fucking retarded claims), it's praised because it's an excellent film.
>>
Older series had a fair limiter with cel, they became stupid with digital. Even lines up with PS2 for studio changes.
>>
>>291918627
That's not the point. It's a highly acclaimed anime that represents the conventions of its time within the medium and (despite heavily borrowing from its own inspirations) was influential on what followed it.
Whether you consider it good or not is something you'll only know after watching it yourself. It's elevated position is a good reason to watch it. Frieren on the other hand doesn't have any of that. What it had was a short-lived hype.
I actually think the Citizen Kane vs. Marvel thing I'm discussing with the other anon is a pretty good analogy: Of course you can, as a fan of the medium, not watch Evanglion and watch Frieren. But statistically, you'd think the majority would choose to do first watch the anime with a legacy before checking out current trends.

Your post in contrast is very little effort for trying to argue for a film you consider "brilliant". In fact, the only answer you seem to have against a pretty detailled critique that points out the good and the bad is "muh excellent film" and going full ad-hominem.
I have to assume that you don't actually care about the film as much as you do, lest you'd been able to at least elaborate on what you liked about its narrative or why you think anything I said about it was wrong. I also have to assume that you are indeed missing the historical context of the things it imitated (poorly).
And, yes, it literally gets taught in film schools for being a "first". Not the first to do any of the techniques, of course, but the first to go large-scale with them. It's a "showcase" for the visual storytelling innovations of its era. There's no debate to be had about that. That's just how it gets taught and discussed. Studying film is not your professors showing you "excellent films". They show you films to make certain specific points.
>>
>>291919247
I don't need to make a canned effort trying to convince an absolute contrarian moron on /a/ about the merits of Citizen Kane. There are hundreds of essays that do that. It's obvious you don't have the capacity for it anyway. All I am is doing is stating to you a simple fact about its reputation. Plus you've now made it obvious you're an evafag using double standards in your praise of that work so that's an extra point of hilarity and a double confirmation of your general ignorance. I do not respect you, I do not wish to convince you and I will continue to ridicule you.
>>
>>291919331
At this point you have to be trolling. You don't even know anything about the critical reception of your beloved film. Not at the time, not later on: Practically all of those "essays" praise exactly what I praised about it: The visual effects, cinematography, editing. Technical aspects.
Writing is rarely ever mentioned.
By the way, did you know that it was a massive flop at the box office? Yes, there was a campaign against it by Hurst, but that usually gets overstated: The film did even worse internationally. Granted, the whole Great Gatsby genre is tailored to the American mentality and generally considered ridiculously simplistic and superficial outside of the US. So it's no surprise that Citizen Kane as one of its most formulaic representants would not appeal to European audiences who never bought into the trend.

>you're an evafag
Kek. No. I do like several of its influences. Gundam and Mazinger, hell, it even owes a lot to Sailor Moon. And all of those things tell better stories than NGE. But it did excel at its characters. The original series, at least. The rebuilds are ... another story, literally and figuratively.
Ironically, Evangelion really does falter on the technical side whereas Citizen Kane perfects its. The parallels really are in their reputation and industry influence.

Anyway, since the thread is ending and you don't seem to want to make any actual argument anyway ... I guess we can end it here, right?
>>
>>291919743
>At this point you have to be trolling.
No.
>You don't even know anything about the critical reception of your beloved film.
No.
>Practically all of those "essays" praise exactly what I praised about it
Not exclusively. No.
>The film did even worse internationally.
>tailored to the American mentality and generally considered ridiculously simplistic and superficial outside of the US
>[did] not appeal to European audiences
Absolutely wrong. It performed better in Europe and in fact French critics used the film to push the film Auteur concept. Thanks for unveiling your own ignorance yet again, poser.
>>
>>291919861
>It performed better in Europe
It literally did not. It barely even aired in Europe initially (and blaming WW2 for that is only a partial truth, cinemas were open and well frequented, but not as friendly to American contributions).
Post war, as it got its re-runs in the US, more European cinemas aired it, but the box office was outright abysmal. I recommend you look up what boxofficemojo has to say on the issue:
https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0033467/
The data is not complete, of course, but what it provides are numbers in the four-digits to low five-digits on the few runs it got in France and Italy, two of the most relevant markets in Europe (missing Germany and Spain).
Critical reception was way worse than it was in the US, and, no, "French critics" did not push any "auteur concept", much less using this film. Not sure what you're thinking of here. Maybe one fringe critic did? Or maybe you're pulling it out of your arse like the rest of your shitposts?
>>
>>291919861
Here, I looked up what Sartre (yes, THE Jean-Paul Sartre) had to say about it in his review for you:
https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2014/08/12/sartre-and-borges-on-welles/

>Kane might have been interesting for the Americans, [but] it is completely passé for us, because the whole film is based on a misconception of what cinema is all about. The film is in the past tense, whereas we all know that cinema has got to be in the present tense. ‘I am the man who is kissing, I am the girl who is being kissed, I am the Indian who is being pursued, I am the man pursuing the Indian.’ And film in the past tense is the antithesis of cinema. Therefore Citizen Kane is not cinema.

He literally pointed out the sloppy uninteresting writing, and that its story would not appeal to Europeans as it did to Americans.
The site linked also provides an even more scathing judgement by Argentinian author Jorge Luis Borges:

>The production is, in general, worthy of its vast subject. The cinematography has a striking depth, and there are shots whose farthest planes (like Pre-Raphaelite paintings) are as precise and detailed as the close-ups. I venture to guess, nonetheless, that Citizen Kane will endure as a certain Griffith or Pudovkin films have “endured”—films whose historical value is undeniable but which no one cares to see again. It is too gigantic, pedantic, tedious. It is not intelligent, though it is the work of genius—in the most nocturnal and Germanic sense of that bad word.
