Finished the manga recently and loved it. Started Volundio and I'm about 40 chapters in and I do like it, but it definitely hasn't quite hooked me as much as Helck did. Last thing that happened was The gang defended the inn and Kohaku got big again.
    >>
    >>291858166
The shift from gag manga to serious plot happened early enough that I did not dislike it.
    >>
Volundio is so boring. I wish it had a fun protagonist like Helk and not that incompetent pansy.
    >>
    >>291858166
    I FUCKING LOWE PIWI
    >>
    >>291861048
While I'm not caught up I do at least appreciate the novel premise it's had so far. No character is as good as anybody from Helck, but I think the gimmick of a guy who juts wants a place he can settle down stuck in a fantasy warring states period and whatever the hell Kohaku knows is neat all together. But it definitely isn't as immediately engaging as anything Helck does, I think.
    >>
    >long-running adventure series like Helck are actually pretty fucking rare these days
    Absolute shame, to be honest.

    >>
    >>291861190
I finally checked out Tower Dungeon a few weeks ago because the premise looked like it would scratch my Vertical World itch. Very cool manga, but it's long running in the sense that I duped myself into reading yet another monthly publication that will probably take years to finish.
    >>
    >>291861361
It seems like it's close(?) to wrapping up, maybe? Like before the end of next year?
It is a cool manga but I definitely feel like Nihei either got told to move it along or lost some steam around halfway through, not even anything specific i can really point to, just started feeling a bit less good than it was before.
    >>
    >>291858166
I enjoyed it, although i only read the manga
I agree with the other anon that the ending arc feels a bit dragged on. But the conclusion was satisfying.
I also like Volundio. Love the mc, Kohaku, and their frens. Haven't read the current battle arc
    >>
    >>291861394
    >lost some steam around halfway through
As someone who binged everything up to the current chapter I don't feel the same way, but I will say that the atmosphere gradually becomes less tense as the good guys link up and challenge the dungeon in larger teams. Now that they've finally formed one big raid party it feels like everything is going to be just fine despite the final boss staring them down.

    Cleo is a cool guy.
Really the biggest appeal for me was him and Kohaku acting like a married couple.

    >>291858166
It was nice but they could have easily turn those 24 episodes into 10 and then use all of that time to just finish the story.

    It's a fantastic manga.
Personally, I enjoy the mysterious comedy that lives in the first two dozen-or-so chapters the most, but seeing the author live up to the build-up with a genuine plot and reasons and lore and good writing made it all-the-more praiseworthy.

Loved it. Binged the manga soon after. Loved it also. Didn't like the fantasy is actually post-apoc sci-fi but I'll give that a pass since I heard it was rushed at the end. I love girl guy partnership that doesn't devolve into romance. The characters were great with their own personalities. Perfect mix of comedy, story, and action
    >>291863305
I liked it. It's not a cliff hanger but doesn't finish the series. I watched the anime first.
    >>291863305
    >>skipped most of the side content that fleshed out the large cast of characters
I binged the manga after the show. It was pretty 1 to 1. The only thing I remember it skipped was 1 or 2 of the little bonus end pages.
    >>
    >>291858166
I remember forgetting about it by the 5th or 6th episode.
Might have to pick it up later. It had good gags, reminded me a bit of Bobobo.
    >>
Seems like a common sentiment, I liked it more when it was mostly comedy. Later part was just okay, probably wouldn't bother if it was like that from the very start.
    >>
    >>291870187
I wouldn't really call that a common sentiment. Seems like most people just appreciate how the comedy (which is very good) makes the back half land way stronger.
    >>
    >>291870261
    >>291870187
Yeah, the comedy draws you in, darker story keeps it going.
It's rare for an extending backstory arc to be worth it, but it's absolutely worth it with Helck.
    >>
It's highly flawed, and I'd say even overrated among people who like it, but it does have great moments.

This entire character was such a weird Red Herring.
    >looks very similar to Vermilio, except older
    >has extensive plot relevant knowledge
    >keeps herself kinda isolated and mysterious

Like I can't be the only one who was expecting time loop shenanigans instead of "Yeah, she's a distant relative." Weird stuff.

    >>

I remember loving the manga, however on attempted re-reads I've never gotten more than 30-40 chapters in before losing interest.

    >>
    >>291858166
Liked the anime, later tried the manga the ending chapters were a drag to go through but it was pretty decent.

Would love to see a new season for this and the female lead is pretty cute too
    >>
tried to give it a read today, but it didn't hook me

    Helck is a total non-character
the worldbuilding is extremely generic, which would be forgivable in a comedy I suppose, except the humor didn't grab me either
    battles are simple powerwank
the story screams there's going to be some twists, probably based on miscommunication or bad assumptions, so reading it is like waiting for the rug to be pulled from under me so I can finally get invested in the true story
except it hadn't happened by vol. 2 yet and it feels like it won't for a while
    I expected more

music from the OST is cool though

    >>291858166
The beginning is timeless and I still reread it sometimes. The tonal shift was interesting but also the point at which the author ran out of ideas. After the catharsis of Vamirio deciding what to do about the human problem the rest is completely skippable.

God, I hate generic flesh monsters that monologue about evolution. They can never explain what that is or why it's good. No identity. Even killing them isn't satisfying because they won't stop regenerating. For decades Japan used to love using them in place of coherent villains, but while they mostly weaned off it Nanaki didn't get the damn memo

After the anime, I read the manga from beginning to end in the span of like a week.

    Absolutely worth it.

    Author health problems always suck.
    >>
does Helck grow a personality later on?
at the beginning he's a total blank, a generic superman with a heart of gold, seemingly oblivious to how he's perceived
he's not even stupid, he just... doesn't react
he's more of a plot device than a character

It's more that Helck's seemingly happy go lucky and oblivious personality gets rounded out and you learn more about why he's like that and why things don't seem to phase him much.
    >>
    >>291926094
It's more he became like that due to what happened to him. As the story progresses you learn who he used to be and why he changed.
    >>
    >>291926094
    Very much so.

I just finished it and the actual ending was good but holy shit cut that final boss fight by like...three-quarters. Way too much "You can never match my true power!" "Actually, my true power is truer and more powerful!" "No, impossible, how can we defeat that?!" "Actually, I foresaw this from the beginning!"

Best bits were Helck and Annie from management on a roadtrip
    >>
    >>291915226
Some major character from Helck will definitely show up at some point.
    >>
    >>291931541
Yeah, the last boss fight was too much. Still, we got tons of good scenes before and after, and it wrapped up well, so I liked it.

Anne from Management roadtrip arc was kino.
    >>
    >>291931541
I liked the final battle, but yes, it was WAY too long. It felt earned for awhile, quite awhile even, but it just kept going and going and going.

    Express it in Nameks.
    >>
    >>291933018
Iirc the final battle takes an entire quarter of the manga and the final boss himself has like 5 phases or some shit. Pretty absurd.
    >>
    >>291933044
Namek is about 27% of the chapters that cover dbz. Pretty close.
    >>
    >>291933147
NAMEK and the FIGHT WITH FREEZA are very different qualifiers
    >>
    >>291933147
To be fair, I feel like the Namek meme came more from the anime and how it felt like the pacing hit a fucking wall during those episodes. Namek is actually pretty brisk in the manga itself.

Blue Exorcist is a similar example where it also isn't even over (I think, been a few months since I caught up) and its final arc had already ballooned to 1/4 of the entire manga. That one was a consequence of the a big battle immediately leading into a final battle (with at least the nominal conflict changing a few times but still), and it made the pacing feel glacial.
    >>
    >>291933213
    So are DBZ and Dragonball.
    >>
    >>291933213
The boss fight alone is over one Namek, when Namek's boss fight is only 44% of the whole. It's an extremely concentrated, slightly oversized Namek.

I remember really enjoying reading the manga when it was ongoing, but then kinda just forgot about it. Don't have any desire to re-read it or even checking the sequel to be honest.
It was a decent read but not very memorable.

I love that "Anne from management" is only used a few times yet she's always referred as that. It's also weird for a character to have both names and both feeling right and wrong at once.
On that note, the island arc is fun, quite a few moments that got a laugh out of me.
The chess game with Azudra and the human guy was also good.
The drama hits when it has to hit.
But yeah the final fight just drags.
Solid manga, but especially solid characters. Hag, Alicia and the blue bitch are truly beautiful characters without much fanservice, if any (I think only the demon girl got some)

    >>
    I remember.
Honestly I enjoyed the first half, then it got too dark, then I saw that the dark stuff was going to be "redeemed" but by that time I was losing interest and it was dragging. I liked the cute redhead and her piggy coworker, also Piwi, a lot of the travel stuff, and Helck's character from the initial false impression to the eventual reveal. So there's honestly a lot of good stuff in the show.

I can confirm this is true. I have never read, and will never read, Kengan Omega, and yet all those stupid fucking memes have infected my rotten brain. It's a horrifying experience. Don't know why there's almost nothing else that has like this, but it's presumably because of it consisting mostly of somewhat generic but just odd enough lines.
