I was considering taking a train for a trip across the country next month to see a concert in another state. HOWEVER! there isn't a trainline that goes directly into that city anymore, so I'd have to ride a cross-city bus at the end, which feels gay, and also just the train ride itself would take 40-48h, depending on which stop I use. There's basically a line that follows the northern border all the way to the west coast from chicago where I live. It's also expensive. A coach ticket would be like 250 or something, which isn't bad, but I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable sleeping in coach with all my stuff just kinda hanging out next to me. I do not live in a particularly high trust society. A private "rommette" would be like 700. Ontop of that, I'd want to visit some places along the way, specifically glacier national park, which this train goes right by. The best option would probably be to get a $500 travel pass which lets you do ten "segments" of travel, spend 5 to get to that city and 5 to get back, with stops along the way each night so I can spend a day or two in multiple towns along the way. But all of this becomes a gigantic journey, quite the adventure. I've never traveled by train anywhere except as a kid. It feels a little romantic to me, but I'm certain doing a 48h train trip for the first foray would be quite hard to pull off. All of this when I can just get a plane ticket to that state and be there in half a day instead...

>>291807203In Britain the exact definition of peak, off-peak and super-off-peak times change per ToC per station, mostly it's just before 9am but some sill through in an afternoon one. some will go to 9:30, some to 10. Super off--peak is just "they probably don't do it and the ones they do are random times you'll have to google to work out".In general it's just always best to buy advanced singles, you can still get them ~5mins before departure on the slow stopping services and ~30mins for intercity expresses but the cheapest ones will have probably gone by then.
