Is my art really that terrible? I feel like I've never made any improvement of note and the only feedback I get is either negative or silence.

Learn how to make good textures
You can try and get away with an "anime shader" plus flat colors all you want, you can add all the outlines and bells and whistles you want but a simple, well-executed texture + a simple shader will always look better

I don't know where to start.
    >>
what are you trying to achieve? the model looks serviceable, it just needs a good pose and a proper scene
you can look up whores online for both
    >>
IS that the new /3/ spamming meta? Several useless threads like that in the last couple days, dumbass post with a random pic bemoaning a lack of progress.
    >>
    >>1031853
you should lessen the outline thickness
    it makes things dirty
    >>
    >>1031853
Your art quality is proportional to the community you belong to so stop hanging out with losers anon.

I sortof dealt with the same interactions regarding my art. I think shes very pretty, anon, keep it up!
Modeling, texturing, rigging and everything in making a character is a lotttt of work that most people dont even know about so if you want praise equal to the effort you put into your model you'll unlikely be satisfied.
Stick with what you like to make but dont ignore other forms or styles, everything in art can blend seamlessly together in the end.
also /3/ is probably the worst community.

    I believe in you.

/3/ is mostly asian gooks in the anime thread and a few random passerbys here and there.

I attempted to improve it but, like... eh.

This shader fucking sucks the hell are you doing?

    It's just a cel shader?
    >>
    >>1032771
if it's "just a cel shader" why is it grainy as fuck and annihilating the nose and other details?

    Outlines?

Really, it's just a cel shader with a little outline and a teensy rimlight I added.

    >>1032765
Big belt and frills, and i see some of that extra hot spot shading too, I think its a good improvement.
I think you should look into the poiyomi shader if youre using unity and especially if youre gonna get her working in vrchat.

feel like the head/face is dragging it down sm, it's so noisy, such inconsistent width / strangely placed lines, the body is pretty good

Ok I put some time in, swapping to inverted hull to try make it less noisy.

    I'm rendering this in unreal.

can you widen her waist and make her more bottom heavy

    The subject matter is ugly

    your character design is soulless

Thanks. I'm either gonna take a course or kms.

Well you are kind of inviting negative responses, but from an artistic standpoint ill say the design is fine, colors are fine as well, but I can see that you didn't pay any attention to texturing and I see overlapping geometry at some spots.

Have you drawn the line art manually? There is a better way to do that using solidify usually.

Maybe learning to draw a bit could help.
    >>
    >>1034147
I don't know anything about texturing or how to start.
    >>
    >>1034148
Well you are doing hand painted textures.
That is just drawing after all. Maybe try to understand at least some art principles and learn to do clean lines etc, we have good resources over at /ic/.

And you saying "I don't know anything" is not true, what you have been doing on your model is obviously texturing already. Just not that clean. So that is where I would pay the most attention to. I would assume you cant get the lines clean because the texture file you work on has too small of a resolution. That or you are lazy. I can't judge that.

If it's not the latter maybe try drawing on a higher res. The lines will always get pixelated if the resolution is too small.

Also what you have done is very one dimensional.
You have one shadow tone for the character.

Try to work in other things in your shader, subsurface scattering, ambient occlusion, add some blush and stuff to the cheeks, rimlight and so on the possibilites are endless.

And definitly do not do the lineart per hand it looks gross.

There are good videos on youtube for toon shaders, and the lineart thing is just a simple trick with solidify.

Study some other models that use this trick maybe.

I will check back in someday with a more basic model but temper your expectations.
    >>
    >>1034152
All good brother it's a learning experience.

Try not to be too negative about yourself if possible. I know it's hard but you will produce better results if you don't hate everything you touch.

    >>1033436
It doesn't matter, it's obviously a practice model
