There are many cat-adjacent animals like ferrets, minks or even lemurs and so on that are similar on the surface: same general size, long tails, fluffy; and while they're cute in their own way we don't care about them too much, while nothing comes close to the perfection of cats. How just one species won so hard at life?

"In a rage, Lord Walter Rothschild left the British Ornithologists' Union and teamed up with a sinister one-eyed reverend to found the Jourdain Society, a rogue league of aristocratic egg collectors who operated outside the law. It was theoretically a charitable society, formed to lobby against the evil influence of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSBP), but it was widely accused of being at the center of a wave of egg theft sweeping the country. The Society held formal gatherings, where tuxedo-clad egg collectors admired antique display cabinets full of rare eggs and competed to produce the rarest specimen. The police regularly raided these meetings, held in swanky hotels across the country, and fully half the members had criminal convictions as late as the 1990s. Again, for egg crimes. But stealing wild eggs is pretty draining (several poachers fell to their deaths, while another was so overcome with egg madness he charged into an osprey reserve with a chainsaw and was arrested trying to saw down trees) and the thieves soon realized there was an easier target: museums. Britain's natural history collections were soon hit by an epidemic of theft."

How many users here realize that calling Lissamphibia (modern amphibians) Temnospondyli is the equivalent of calling birds dinosaurs? The consensus is nearly absolute, with the exception of David Marjanovic and Michel Laurin, who theorize that Lepospondyli gave rise to Lissamphibia, but their views are as marginal as Feduccia’s are in the world of ornithology regarding bird evolution.

He’s all grown up, and enjoys car rides, climbing trees, going to new places, and most of all, his capybara. Some believe him to be a goblin or gremlin. Jefrey was named after the Pixies song “Space (I Believe In)”. Jefrey suffers from mild ear-ectile dysfunction. Originally posted him here back in July 2024 seeking advice for potential health problems due to his folded ears, some /an/ons wanted more of him, and so now you’re stuck with him. While diving with Sama-Bajau communities in Southeast Asia, Erika Schagatay watched people move underwater with circular strokes of their legs, leaving their hands free to gather food. They surfaced to breathe, then descended again, repeating the work for hours. The physiologist visited diving communities between 1988 and 2025, learning from the Sama-Bajau and Japan’s Ama divers. She and paleoanthropologist Josephine Joordens are now examining whether the demands of working underwater could help explain how our ancestors developed their endurance. Compared with other apes, humans have a remarkable combination of abilities for sustained running, swimming, and breath-hold diving. The researchers argue that an explanation for our endurance should account for all three. Japanese Ama divers gather shellfish such as abalone through repeated breath-hold dives. An earlier study co-authored by Schagatay recorded two working hours for three female Ama divers aged 40 to 45. One woman made 50 dives, spending 45 percent of that time underwater. Another made 65 shallower dives. Looking across species, the researchers found that human diving patterns fall within the range of shallow-diving, semi-aquatic mammals, with a particular resemblance to those of sea otters. Schagatay and Joordens argue that, over generations, repeated diving could have favored ancestors whose bodies replenished and conserved oxygen efficiently. To build their case, the researchers brought together earlier studies of diving physiology, comparisons with other mammals, and evidence from ancient human fossils. https://www.discovermagazine.com/diving-like-sea-otters-may-have-helped-our-ancestors-build-the-stamina-to-run-49692

I'm disappointed that there's no thread for these retarded little dudes. Sure, they die after two or three years and they are are totally unprepared for domesticated life, but as long as they have a decent sized enclosure and you give them enough enrichment (substrate to dig in, quality food including nits and seeds they get to wear their incisors down opening, and some quality exploration time out of their enclosure) they make good tiny companions. Also, you're saving them from being a toy for some foid or a small child that cannot understand their tiny world. Hamster fondness feels like something that must be not entirely uncommon here. Of course, maybe I'm wrong and just suck cocks (entirely possible,) i'd share ham but I can't find photos of my previous hamsters and I don't have space for a good enclosure right now. Why do you like/dislike hamsters? You will be judged.

I've been doing some research on canine transmissible venereal tumors (CTVTs), and have come to the conclusion that they are properly considered independent organisms of their own distinct species. They're unicellular, asexual, parasitical clonal colonies descended from dogs. As a group they've persisted for hundreds if not thousands of years. I've sought out counterarguments but none yet have convinced me. If you've got any novel ones, let's hear them. Otherwise speculate on the implications of there existing dogs with almost none of the features associated with dogs.

I am teaching my princess parrot to recognise objects and colours (with small wicker balls she likes to play with already) to see if I can mimic the experiments with Alex the African Grey parrot. Ultimately I want to raise awareness of these creatures because they are considered "aloof aviary birds" to help stop the aviary trade, but she's genuinely the smartest parrot I've ever owned. She really likes green because it sounds like her flock call. I'm trying to stay still when I do it so I don't prime her like Clever Hans the horse (which desu still shows horses are quite intelligent). Pic related was me just starting out with green only. She can pick green every time and blue most of the time when I ask, even when switching balls, and she's already making soft vocalisations. Do you guys believe there is validity to the notion parrots can understand language/communicate using human language?

That modern dogs were more vicious than prehistoric temnospondyls and raurisuchians. I find this annoying. What is it with certain populations of the paleocommunity trying to borify/mediocrify prehistoric creatures? The Dunkleosteus and Spinosaurus won't be the first victims of this.

These two desert animals shares a symbiotic relationship in the deserts of Israel, Jordan, and the surrounding region > Tristram's starlings land directly on the backs, horns, and heads of Nubian ibex to pick off ticks, lice, and other skin parasites > The bird gets an easy, protein-rich meal, while the ibex gets relief from irritating and harmful parasites > Ibex are typically very patient and stationary during these grooming sessions, allowing the birds to perch on them without alarm

what is the best amphibian and why is it the the true toad? the amerimutt toad and fowlers toad rape whatever amphibian you're thinking of. >American toads, scientifically known as Anaxyrus americanus, are the most widespread toad species in North America. They are commonly found in various habitats, including forests, gardens, and urban areas. Physical Characteristics >Size: Typically grow to about 2 to 3.5 inches in length. >Skin: Warty skin that can produce a poisonous secretion for defense. >Color: Usually brown, but can also be olive, gray, or red with light patches. Their bellies are typically white or yellow. Habitat and Behavior >Geographic Range: Found throughout North America, from northern Mexico to Canada. >Habitat Preferences: Require semi-permanent freshwater ponds for breeding and dense vegetation for cover. >Diet: Primarily feed on insects, worms, and other invertebrates. Reproduction & Breeding Details >Breeding Season: Occurs from March to July, depending on the location. >Eggs: Females lay between 4,000 to 12,000 eggs in long strands in water. >Hatching: Eggs hatch in 3 to 12 days, and tadpoles undergo metamorphosis in about 5 to 10 weeks. Life Cycle >Metamorphosis: Tadpoles transform into toadlets, which are about 0.8 to 1.3 cm long at emergence. >Maturity: American toads reach sexual maturity in 2 to 4 years. Ecological Role >American toads play a crucial role in their ecosystems by controlling insect populations, thus contributing to the balance of their habitats. They are also known for their distinctive calls during the breeding season, which can be heard on warm evenings in spring and summer. Total toad victory. Burmate well, my little frens. See you in spring.

That's explains why some hunting dogs breeds are orange-reddish coloration with mixed with blackish dark patches, splodges and sable back patterns like a camo to camouflage themselves from cervidae's color blind due to unable to see reddish-orange colors but shades of gray, brown and yellowish brown. That's why there's grey, silver, brown and bluish on other hunting dog breeds coloration too. I first learn't about this on Tigers of why tigers are orange colored. - https://nadeerhunter.com/understanding-deer-vision-can-they-see-orange/ - https://deerassociation.com/can-deer-see-blaze-orange/ - https://wildlifeinformer.com/can-deer-see-orange/ - https://all-creatures.org/wildlife/wildlife-tigers-orange-coloring.html

If werewolves were real, what would their lifecycle be like? Would they be more like actual wolves, or violently savage? What laws would be made regarding conserving their species? Would they have human rights, or be treated like exotic aninals? What about other mythological creatures?

If you’re in DC, vote yes on Initiative 86 Suppose you learned that your neighbor Fred kept geese in small cages in his basement. He shoved a tube down their throats to force feed them sickening quantities of food, causing their livers to grow to many times their normal size. After a short period, he killed them. This was done because fattening their liver made it tastier. Fred would be doing something evil. For the same reasons, the foie gras industry is evil. It is a remarkable fact that even in a country with as deplorable a disregard for animal welfare as America, foie gras is so cruel as to be almost synonymous with animal cruelty. This synonymity is well earned; foie gras is evil and grotesque. DC is currently voting on Initiative 86 which would ban foie gras. They should vote yes. Foie gras has been consistently condemned https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foie_gras_controversy#EU_Scientific_Committee_on_Animal_Health_and_Welfare_report_(1998) as inhumane by outside bodies reviewing it. It involves shoving a metal pipe down the throat of the ducks and force feeding them so that their livers grow to many times their normal size. While it’s often claimed that ducks don’t have a gag reflex, this is unclear. https://modernfarmer.com/2015/01/weekly-glean-artificially-enlarged-liver/
