Is papercraft as a hobby dying?
    R: 20 / I: 2▶
I had a question but none of the existing threads are really too relevant so I thought making a general help thread from the get-go (beyond what’s in the welcome thread) would be good so even if my question gets answered the thread can be used for other people’s questions I’m making a papercraft where I want to paint part of it gold for some extra pop, but I want neat and clean lines. I’ve seen a lot of artists use washi tape to do this in their art and I want something similar, but I have inkjet prints and don’t want any of the ink to lift up. Any tape recommendations? Or possibly other techniques? I’ve done some googling but I don’t wanna take my chances with buying a ton of tape just to test it.

(It's my first post on 4chan, let me know if I do something bad) Have you heard of a legend about 1000 of paper cranes? People say if you make 1000 of them, your wish can get granted. So, for the sake of my wish I decided to try. I have over 100 cranes, but I rarely have time to make more, so I'm trying. Have a nice night, byeee!

Hello! I make pepakura for money. Models are usually constructed only once. My pieces are not so much like what we can find online; they tend to be VERY large and intricate, akin to a vg model. This is context for what my advice applies to. If you do it as an easy hobby or stick with truly low poly/tiny part models, a lot won't apply. No pic related just inspo, this is advice dump not my art thread. If you have any questions, why X, tell me more about Z, I am happy to oblige. I rarely use 4chan and wrote this on a whim, sorry if no reply. If you are interested in reaching for the stars with pepakura, here are my personal trade secrets. MATERIALS/TOOLS ---Do not score the fold lines by hand. If you have a silhouette cameo, go ahead. To fold by hand purchase a glass scraper. I have two, one with a small 1.5 inch blade and another that is 4 inches. Dull the blade. I align the fold line across my fingers, press down with the blade. ---Stop using an xacto knife. Get a snap blade utility knife. I HIGHLY recommend OLFA, XA-1 design. ---Titebond II Premium wood glue. It doesn't cure instantly but that's good, you don't want that. You want to be able to move the tab around into the perfect position before it starts curing. You have a 10 second window to make sure it's in position before it starts curing, then another 10 seconds till you can let go & any tension in the structure won't pull the tab out of place. ---Tiny squeezable craft bottles for glue. One of the bottles I added thicker medical syringe tube. It is long, which is good for when I have to apply glue to a tab which is difficult to access The other bottle has a 1 inch long coffee straw, I use that for when I need a lot of glue then spread it around. When a tab is huge I just open a jar of glue and use a brush to paint it on. ---Dental tools. ---Little neodymium magnets. I rarely use them, usually to hold a tab in place after the glue has already cured to the point that I can let go. See below

Some time ago, several users contributed various NOA magazines to a publicly shared folder. This is a reminder that everyone can access and contribute to this folder to keep it up to date and ensure all magazines are accessible to everyone. Currently, we have most of the magazines, except for the latest issues and newsletters. Please refer to the index file to see the list of currently shared magazines. You can access the shared drive using this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1YYwrQLPUqv-aCvyNbRdNKLSHe7Zb-dXO?usp=sharing Please note that the folder has read-only permissions because many items were accidentally deleted several months ago. If you have any missing magazines to contribute, please upload them to this post, and I will update the shared folder accordingly. Thank you all for your contributions!

I want to make a papercraft mask for Halloween, I was thinking maybe a goat or a cow. Where do you find patterns / templates for masks? I've tried searching with search engines, looking on Reddit, on torrent trackers, on Libgen, but no luck so far.

Today I've found out about the latest tanteidan issue. It has steps for the mosquito on the cover, I would love to fold it. A digital release is not available and single issues can't be purchased; to get the magazine I would need to buy a yearly subscription. Moreover shipments from Japan can take up to three months in my experience. If anyone has a copy I would gladly pay for a scan with Paypal, thank you.

Feel free to post your designs, .pdf files, and folding instructions. Anything goes as long as it flies or at least looks like its supposed to.

Do you guys only fold paper cranes and glue Warhammer figures? I've never seen a bookbinding thread here. Printed and bound House of Leaves. Split it into 2 volumes because I was afraid to work with so many pages at once. Covered with paper-backed vinyl (black) and linen fabric (red), which will probably collect a ton of dust pretty soon. Couldn't decide how to put the titles on. Should have made a debossed rectangle with a paper label glued inside. But I hoped that hot ink transfer would work. So I made the covers first, then printed the title on ink transfer paper, and found out that pressing a hot iron to the cloth-covered board warps the board due to heat expansion. Tried on small swatches first (picrel). This method won't work. As I understand it, my current options to put the title are limited to >linocut transfer >screening (sponging the ink through a trafaret) >just print a paper label and glue it on top Don't have any hot stamping tools to work with foil, nor the desire to purchase these materials.

I made this little puzzle box called a soma cube for my girlfriend for Christmas. I was going to make a little wooden box to put it in, wood burn something on it, and then wrap the box up for Christmas with a few other things I have since returned since, well, she broke up with me. I haven't made the wooden box yet, and I'm kind of lost on whether I should finish it up for the sake of completion or if I should just make a paper box and wrap it up just to sit on a shelf, maybe for someone else or the next girlfriend, or just to sit as a trinket.

Welcome to /po/! We specialize in origami, papercraft, and everything that’s relevant to paper engineering. This board is also an great library of relevant PDF books and instructions, one of the best resource of its kind on the internet. Questions and discussions of papercraft and origami are welcome. Threads for topics covered by paper engineering in general are also welcome, such as kirigami, bookbinding, printing technology, sticker making, gift boxes, greeting cards, and more. Requesting is permitted, even encouraged if it’s a good request; fulfilled requests strengthens this board’s role as a repository of books and instructions. However do try to keep requests in relevant threads, if you can. /po/ is a slow board! Do not needlessly bump threads.

So I am tea dyeing and then baking paper to get a nice distressed look. I want to bind it with some this twine to keep a rustic look, but I am worried I will just keep ripping it. Pic related is my test leaf I made from my over cooked pieces. End of the day this is a prop for a table top RPG, so it will need to be strong enough to stand up to handling. Anyways anyone here ever worked with distressed paper or hand bound books? Any help would be great.

I just finished this model and I realized a few things: always print your models using inkjet, not laser because the laser toner cracks when you fold it and white lines show up. also, never use liquid super glue on thin paper because it bleeds terribly. i only use gel super glue because its thicker and spreads evenly

I want to create a PMC/User Version of Death Wish/Taken where a severly autustic guy who lives in a group home becomes a vigilante after his primary caretaker is killed. No one belives hes the vigilante until they discover his seemingly harmless channel, but in the end he is found not mentally competent to stand trial and is let free. The same incompetent law enforcement that let his caretaker’s brutalized walk free has also let himself walk free.. The challenge was to make a mask that was scary and effective while still looking like it could’ve been made by a disabled person. In my original drafts this is supposed to be his “first mask” like he lacks the mental capacity to understand what vigilantism is but he knows that if he gets caught killing people, good or bad,he would get caught (though he’s unaware that nobody would believe he was the vigilante anyways due to his condition). So he constructs a “crappy” mask, but over time the group home teaches him paper mache so he learns to make better and better ones. It’s hard to make something look bad on purpose without it looking… bad. I was inspired by kids making paper Micheal Myers masks mainly.

Traditional is preferred, but contemporary or from something (like an anime or video game since she really likes those) is also welcome. My origami skills need honing, though, since I took a several year long break, so simpler origami is preferred for the time being. Thank you for your help.

I remember I tried to make one 3 headed origami once, from a book I found here called “Fantastic creatures”. Even though I used a large silk paper, I wasn’t able to finish it. However, I was able to make the horse (which the separate horse rider), from David Brill’s “Brilliant Origami”. I used a triangle piece of a thick A2 paper (as the book recommends). Nowadays—after several years—I’ve done the horse again, but this time made out of a triangle off an A4 printer paper. I finished while I was working, because even though phones are forbidden, they let me use my Kindle, so I just sent the .pdf to it and successfully finished it. Now the girl I’m flirting with has challenged me to make a dragon, please suggest me what model should I try, based on my origami skills :). Thank you for your time and for welcoming me back <3.

My first time posting here. I don’t even know anything about origami but got a cousin the hospital and have time to kill. Also works like to teach her some stuff. Any good simple and funny stuff that I could make but also teach her how to make? Stuff that looks cool but really simple. Also cute. Thanks in advance!

I was looking for for my copy of ChronoTrigger in the basement when I came across this box from when I was 15/17. These are some of the letters and notes girls used to send me. Most of them are folded normally. However some of them range from unusual to insane. The origami folded ones I literally haven't opened in 15+ years because I don't wanna fuck up the folds trying to get them back the same way. Is this a thing or was I just living in a different timeline?

I swear I might be the only person making this kind of origami. I've been doing this since 5th grade after getting obsessed with Pacific Rim and making Kaijus and Jaegers out of paper. Somehow it evolved into this. I've seen other people try, but most end up wetting the paper or crumpling it too much until it gets soft and brittle. That's not how I do it. Thinking of selling some of these. Anyone wanna buy one?

Maaaaaany years ago, we had a really good thread with youtube recs for origami channels that had medium and advanced stuff and not just kiddy things. I subscribed to tons of stuff and never looked back. Now for tldr reasons I won't got into, I lost all my subscriptions. There are a few channels I remember the names and I've already re-subscribed, but overall I'm at a loss (especially since many of those recs had the names in Japanese). Searching for origami on youtube now throws a lot of slop. By any chance, does anyone have those amazing recs?

I have an AI generated sphere and I would like to create (or get a start on, since the back isn't shown) a longitudinal-gore for printing and turning into an irl sphere. Does anyone have an idea of any good mapping software that can help accomplish this?

Hi, I'm looking for some papercraft sources, like Creativepark, with papercrafts that I can do with kids aged 9-12. Those papercrafts need to be simple, because those kids have been raised exclusively by youtube shorts brainrot, and anything too difficult fries their brains. They need to be doable within 40 minutes. It'd be great if someone had some papercrafts of flowers that could be later used to decorate a classroom. Thanks

The ones that have instructions available online. On youtube perhaps. Or some pdf. I personally want: - no 3d geometric tesselations - no wet folding - no glue - no repetitive tedious folding like scales and feathers and patterns - folded from reasoable-sized square paper, like 20cm x 20cm Picrel are Jacky Chan's origami duckling and Jo Nakashima's penguin on youtube.
